Book excerpt: If you’ve ever found yourself questioning God’s timing, you’ll love the witty, tongue-in-cheek insights of Karon Phillips Goodman’s You’re Late Again, Lord! With nearly a quarter-million copies sold in previous editions, You’re Late Again, Lord! clearly speaks to a felt need—as the subtitle says, this is “The Impatient Woman’s Guide to God’s Timing.” Through chapter titles such as “Knowing Who You Are” and “Rediscovering the Peace That’s Hidden by Worry,” you’ll be encouraged to wait on God, and to spend that waiting time purposefully—by deepening your relationship with the Lord.

Download or read book Gringoismos written by Dave Adkins and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I took two years of Latin at Grinnell (Iowa) High School and two years of French at Cornell College, but I never really committed to using these languages. However, when I spent three years in Mozambique I had an opportunity to pursue the Portuguese language in an everyday situation. When I returned to the U.S., I studied the spoken and written form of the language with a Brazilian speaking partner and developed a useful fluency. I then decided to use the basics of Portuguese in the study of Spanish. I had a number of Spanish speaking partners, did some work assignments in Tehuacan, Mexico and earned an M.A. from the University of Leon. Using some creativity, I was able to read, write and converse in Spanish as often as I wished in my places of residence in Iowa and Texas. I have written this book of bilingual essays called “Gringoismos” which is a presentation of personal experiences in the Hispanic culture as well as some take-offs on Spanish writings.

Book Synopsis Variation in Second and Heritage Languages by : Robert Bayley
Download or read book Variation in Second and Heritage Languages written by Robert Bayley and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variationist work in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) began in the mid 1970s and steadily progressed during the 1980s. Much of it was reviewed along with newer approaches in Bayley and Preston 1996 (B&P), heavily devoted to VARBRUL analyses that exposed the variability in developing interlanguages and placed variationist work within the canon of SLA. This new volume features three developing trends. First, it widens the scope of L1s of learners (from 6 in B&P to 8) and L2 targets (2 in B&P to 7) and in each case has brought more careful demographic and variable considerations to bear, including heritage languages and study abroad. Second, it modernizes statistics by moving from VARBRUL to the more widely used log-odds probabilities that allow more detailed consideration of variables and their influences. Finally, it deepens consideration of variable sociolinguistic meaning in learner behaviors, a dominating feature of 3rd Wave variationist work.

Book Synopsis Empire of Sand by : Thomas E. Sheridan
Download or read book Empire of Sand written by Thomas E. Sheridan and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest days of their empire in the New World, the Spanish sought to gain control of the native peoples and lands of what is now Sonora. While missionaries were successful in pacifying many Indians, the Seris--independent groups of hunter-gatherers who lived on the desert shores and islands of the Gulf of California--steadfastly defied Spanish efforts to subjugate them. Empire of Sand is a documentary history of Spanish attempts to convert, control, and ultimately annihilate the Seris. These papers of religious, military, and government officials attest to the Seris' resilience in the face of numerous Spanish attempts to conquer them and remove them from their lands. Most of the documents are being made available for the first time, while the few that have been published are extremely difficult to find. They include early observations of the Seris by Jesuit missionaries; the collapse of the Seri mission system in 1748; accounts of the invasion of Tibur¢n Island in 1750 and the Sonora Expedition of 1767-1771; and reports of late-eighteenth-century Seri hostilities. Thomas Sheridan's introduction puts the documents in perspective, while his notes objectively clarify their significance. In a superb analysis of contact history, Sheridan shows through these documents that Spaniards and Seris understood one another well, and it was their inability to tolerate each other's radically different societies and cultures that led to endless conflict between them. By skillfully weaving the documents into a coherent narrative of Spanish-Seri interaction, he has produced a compelling account of empire and resistance that speaks to anthropologists, historians, and all readers who take heart in stories of resistance to oppression.
