Book excerpt: This reference book defines the work of major organizations in the United States concerned with public policies that affect 30 million elderly Americans today. In-depth analyses of the strategies, programs, and publications of eighty-three national non-profit and non-partisan groups give an overview of citizen work on behalf of the aging and the aged. A brief history of organizational development and a listing of pertinent national legislation provides important background information. Directories of other important organizations, a selected bibliography, a full index, and cross-references make this volume easy for students, professionals, and citizen activists to use. Entries are arranged alphabetically--each entry contains sections on the origin and development of the group, its organization and funding, policy concerns and tactics, electoral activity, and publications and sources for further information. This volume joins a series of references that deal with the formation of public policy among different interest groups in the United States.

Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography reviews and summarizes existing literature published between 1975 and 1990 on elderly South East Asian refugees, mainly those resettled in the United States. The bibliography contains separate categories for the Cambodians, the ethnic Chinese, the Hmong, the Laotians and the Vietnamese, followed by a category for general South East Asian publications. It lists 151 items in alphabetical order within the categories and ends with author and subject indexes. According to the United States Office of Refugee Resettlement, approximately 15 per cent of the resident South East Asians are aged 45 years or older, of which 16 per cent are Vietnamese, 13.7 per cent are Hmong/Laotians and 15.3 are Cambodians. The aim of this bibliography is therefore to make available the literature on this minority and vulnerable group of refugees.

It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Download or read book Development in an Ageing World written by United Nations. Department of Economic and Social Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greater longevity is an indicator of human progress in general. Increased life expectancy and lower fertility rates are changing the population structure worldwide in a major way: the proportion of older persons is rapidly increasing, a process known as population ageing. The process is inevitable and is already advanced in developed countries and progressing quite rapidly in developing ones. The 2007 Survey analyses the implications of population ageing for social and economic development around the world, while recognising that it offers both challenges and opportunities. Among the most pressing issues is that arising from the prospect of a smaller labour force having to support an increasingly larger older population. Paralleling increased longevity are the changes in intergenerational relationships that may affect the provision of care and income security for older persons, particularly in developing countries where family transfers play a major role. At the same time, it is also necessary for societies to fully recognise and better harness the productive and social contributions that older persons can make but are in many instances prevented from making. The Survey argues that the challenges are not insurmountable, but that societies everywhere need to put in place the policies required to confront those challenges effectively and to ensure an adequate standard of living for each of their members, while respecting and promoting the contribution and participation of all.

Download or read book Families Caring for an Aging America written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family caregiving affects millions of Americans every day, in all walks of life. At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.
