Book Synopsis Ensuring a Sustainable Future by : Jody Heymann
Download or read book Ensuring a Sustainable Future written by Jody Heymann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is very little argument that the world is facing severe environmental challenges. Ongoing air and water pollution, increasing energy consumption, and the depletion of natural resources have all placed considerable stress on the capacity of our environment to support the present quality of human life in a sustainable manner. Ensuring a Sustainable Future does what few previous works have: it examines these trends' disproportionate impact on the poor and the economically viable solutions that can serve to remedy them -- solutions that simultaneously address environmental and economic problems. This gap in previous research, evidence, and writing has left low-income countries often unwilling to take on major environmental problems and many poor communities believing they faced impossible choices between improving the environment in which they live and increasing the jobs and income available. Bringing together evidence-based recommendations and in-depth case studies of successful policies and programs around the world, Ensuring a Sustainable Future examines innovative solutions to this crucial challenge. In doing so, it addresses a comprehensive range of environmental sustainability challenges affecting low-, middle-, and high-income countries.

Book Synopsis Transport Sociology by : Enne de Boer
Download or read book Transport Sociology written by Enne de Boer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Sociology: Social Aspects of Transport Planning focuses on the importance of an efficient transport plan in ensuring order in neighborhoods and social functions, as well as management and control of the environmental impacts of transport systems in communities and cities. The manuscript first offers information on the relationship of social impacts and infrastructure and a neighborhood protest of an urban highway in Brookline-Elm. Topics include project and environment in a process of development; assessment and aid; social character of Brookline-Elm neighborhoods; and effectiveness of protest. The text also reviews the problems and proposals in urban freeways and social structure, including the psychological impacts of physical disruption, social functioning and physical disruption, and the city as a social system. The publication discusses the social and environmental impacts of transport investments, as well as the conceptual model of environmental impacts, strategies for impact assessment, and comparative nature of impact assessment. The book also takes a look at the environmental quality of city streets and the sociology of car traffic in towns. Topics include traffic as a social system; restructuring traffic facilities; traffic and town planning; social interaction; and stress, noise, and pollution. The manuscript is a dependable source of data for readers interested in studying the social facets of transport planning.

Book Synopsis Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility by : Un-Habitat
Download or read book Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility written by Un-Habitat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban transport systems worldwide are faced by a multitude of challenges. Among the most visible of these are the traffic gridlocks experienced on city roads and highways all over the world. The prescribed solution to transport problems in most cities has thus been to build more infrastructures for cars, with a limited number of cities improving public transport systems in a sustainable manner. However, a number of challenges faced by urban transport systems – such as greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution and road traffic accidents – do not necessarily get solved by the construction of new infrastructure. Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility argues that the development of sustainable urban transport systems requires a conceptual leap. The purpose of ‘transportation’ and ‘mobility’ is to gain access to destinations, activities, services and goods. Thus, access is the ultimate objective of transportation. As a result, urban planning and design should focus on how to bring people and places together, by creating cities that focus on accessibility, rather than simply increasing the length of urban transport infrastructure or increasing the movement of people or goods. Urban form and the functionality of the city are therefore a major focus of this report, which highlights the importance of integrated land-use and transport planning. This new report of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the world’s leading authority on urban issues, provides some thought-provoking insights and policy recommendations on how to plan and design sustainable urban mobility systems. The Global Report on Human Settlements is the most authoritative and up-to-date global assessment of human settlements conditions and trends. Preceding issues of the report have addressed such topics as Cities in a Globalizing World, The Challenge of Slums, Financing Urban Shelter, Enhancing Urban Safety and Security, Planning Sustainable Cities and Cities and Climate Change.
