Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book represents to a large extent the translation of the German "Vorlesungen über Himmelsmechanik" by C. L. Siegel. The demand for a new edition and for an English translation gave rise to the present volume which, however, goes beyond a mere translation. To take account of recent work in this field a number of sections have been added, especially in the third chapter which deals with the stability theory. Still, it has not been attempted to give a complete presentation of the subject, and the basic prganization of Siegel's original book has not been altered. The emphasis lies in the development of results and analytic methods which are based on the ideas of H. Poincare, G. D. Birkhoff, A. Liapunov and, as far as Chapter I is concerned, on the work of K. F. Sundman and C. L. Siegel. In recent years the measure-theoretical aspects of mechanics have been revitalized and have led to new results which will not be discussed here. In this connection we refer, in particular, to the interesting book by V. I. Arnold and A. Avez on "Problemes Ergodiques de la Mecanique Classique", which stresses the interaction of ergodic theory and mechanics. We list the points in which the present book differs from the German text. In the first chapter two sections on the tri pie collision in the three body problem have been added by C. L. Siegel.

The subject of our NATO Advanced Study Institute in 1981 was the Application of Modern Dynamics to Celestial Mechanics and Astrodynamics. This Preface will first explain the terminology, then it will review shortly the content of the lectures and will outline how all this was made possible and, finally, it will disclose our future aspirations. Periodicity is an extremely important concept in our field, therefore, it should not be unexpected that our NATO Advanced Study Institute is enjoying a period of three years. Since 1972 we conducted four Institutes with increasing interest and en thusiasm displayed by the participants, lecturers and by this Director. Celestial Mechanics or Dynamical Astronomy is part of Astronomy dealing mostly with the motion of natural celestial bodies. Astrodynamics or Orbital Mechanics is the application of dynamics to problems of Space Engineering and it treats mostly the dynamical behavior of artificial satellites and space probes. The underlying mathematical and dynamical principles are, of course, the same for Celestial Mechanics and for Astrodynamics. This Director of the Institute and Editor of the Proceedings was extremely fortunate to have obtained the cooperation of out standing lecturers who were clear, thorough, understandable, patient to answer questions, but above all, had knowledge of the ix V. The School of Astronomy and Geophysics of La Plata National University, best known as La Plata Observatory, was the host institution. The Observatory (cover photo) was founded in 1883, and it has nowadays about 120 faculty members and 70 non-faculty members devoted to teaching and research in different areas of astronomy and geophysics. It was very nice to see how many people, from young students to well recognized authorities in the field, came to participate in the meeting. This audience success was due to the increasing understanding of the neces sity to gather together people from Celestial Mechanics and Stellar Dynamics to explore the problems that exist at the frontier of these two disciplines and their common interest in chaotic phenomena and integrability (the famous Argentine beef was, certainly, also an attraction!). All the papers of the present volume were refereed. Most were accepted after some revision, while some needed no change at all (compli ments to their authors!) and, sadly, a few could not be included. About half a dozen authors did not submit their contributions for publication, mainly because they were already in print elsewhere. Therefore, the special issue of Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy includes all the invited lectures of the workshop, while the proceedings volume includes those same lectures plus the bulk of, but Bot all, the contributions to the meeting.

Williams; and Summary - P. K. Seidelmann. The goal of the discussions was to identify what we did not know and how we might further our knowledge. The size of the meeting and the language differences somewhat limited the real discussion, but, due to the excellence of the different discussion leaders, each of these sessions was very interesting and productive. Celestial Mechanics and Astrometry are both small fields within the general subject of Astronomy. There is also an overlap and relationship between these fields and Astrodynamics. The amount of interaction depends on the interest and efforts of individual scientists.
