Book excerpt: 'Motives' were introduced in the mid-1960s by Grothendieck to explain the analogies among the various cohomology theories for algebraic varieties, and to play the role of the missing rational cohomology. This work contains the texts of the lectures presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Motives, held in Seattle, in 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are expanded versions of lectures delivered at the Graduate Summer School and at the Mentoring Program for Women in Mathematics held at the Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute. The theme of the program was arithmetic algebraic geometry. The choice of lecture topics was heavily influenced by the recent spectacular work of Wiles on modular elliptic curves and Fermat's Last Theorem. The main emphasis of the articles in the volume is on elliptic curves, Galois representations, and modular forms. One lecture series offers an introduction to these objects. The others discuss selected recent results, current research, and open problems and conjectures. The book would be a suitable text for an advanced graduate topics course in arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Volume I presents the speeches delivered at the Congress, the list of lectures, and short summaries of the achievements of the prize winners as well as papers by plenary and parallel speakers. The second volume collects articles by prize winners and speakers of the mini-symposia. This two-volume set thus gives an overview of the state of the art in many fields of mathematics and is therefore of interest to every professional mathematician. Contributors: R. Ahlswede, V. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book divides naturally into several parts according to the level of the material, the background required of the reader, and the style of presentation with respect to details of proofs. For example, the first part, to Chapter 6, is undergraduate in level, the second part requires a background in Galois theory and the third some complex analysis, while the last parts, from Chapter 12 on, are mostly at graduate level. A general outline ofmuch ofthe material can be found in Tate's colloquium lectures reproduced as an article in Inven tiones [1974]. The first part grew out of Tate's 1961 Haverford Philips Lectures as an attempt to write something for publication c10sely related to the original Tate notes which were more or less taken from the tape recording of the lectures themselves. This inc1udes parts of the Introduction and the first six chapters The aim ofthis part is to prove, by elementary methods, the Mordell theorem on the finite generation of the rational points on elliptic curves defined over the rational numbers. In 1970 Tate teturned to Haverford to give again, in revised form, the originallectures of 1961 and to extend the material so that it would be suitable for publication. This led to a broader plan forthe book.

Després, ja no podrà parar. La persona i l’obra el captivaran per seguir endavant.

The following spectrum of topics is covered: K3 surfaces and Enriques surfaces Prym varieties and their moduli invariants of singularities in birational geometry differential forms on singular spaces Minimal Model Program linear systems toric varieties Seshadri and packing constants equivariant cohomology Thom polynomials arithmetic questions The main purpose of the volume is to give comprehensive introductions to the above topics, starting from an elementary level and ending with a discussion of current research. The first four topics are represented by the notes from the mini courses held during the conference. In the articles, the reader will find classical results and methods, as well as modern ones. This book is addressed to researchers and graduate students in algebraic geometry, singularity theory, and algebraic topology. Most of the material in this volume has not yet appeared in book form.

Book excerpt: This contributed volume is a follow-up to the 2013 volume of the same title, published in honor of noted Algebraist David Eisenbud's 65th birthday. It brings together the highest quality expository papers written by leaders and talented junior mathematicians in the field of Commutative Algebra. Contributions cover a very wide range of topics, including core areas in Commutative Algebra and also relations to Algebraic Geometry, Category Theory, Combinatorics, Computational Algebra, Homological Algebra, Hyperplane Arrangements, and Non-commutative Algebra. The book aims to showcase the area and aid junior mathematicians and researchers who are new to the field in broadening their background and gaining a deeper understanding of the current research in this area. Exciting developments are surveyed and many open problems are discussed with the aspiration to inspire the readers and foster further research.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shimura curves are a far-reaching generalization of the classical modular curves. They lie at the crossroads of many areas, including complex analysis, hyperbolic geometry, algebraic geometry, algebra, and arithmetic. This monograph presents Shimura curves from a theoretical and algorithmic perspective. The main topics are Shimura curves defined over the rational number field, the construction of their fundamental domains, and the determination of their complex multiplicationpoints. The study of complex multiplication points in Shimura curves leads to the study of families of binary quadratic forms with algebraic coefficients and to their classification by arithmetic Fuchsian groups. In this regard, the authors develop a theory full of new possibilities that parallels Gauss'theory on the classification of binary quadratic forms with integral coefficients by the action of the modular group. This is one of the few available books explaining the theory of Shimura curves at the graduate student level. Each topic covered in the book begins with a theoretical discussion followed by carefully worked-out examples, preparing the way for further research.
