Book excerpt: The frequent use of well known critical data handbooks like Beilstein, Gmelin and Landolt-Bomstein is impeded by the fact that merely larger libraries - often far away from the scientist's working place - can afford such precious collections. To satisfy an urgent need of many scientists working in the field of semiconductor physics for having at their working place a comprehensive, high quality, but cheap collection of at least the basic data of their field of interest this volume contains the most important data of semiconductors. All data were compiled from information on semiconductors presented on more than 6000 pages in various volumes of the New Series of Landolt-Bomstein. We hope to meet the needs of the community of semiconductor physicists with this volume, forming a bridge between the laboratory and additional information sources in the libraries. In this richly illustrated account the author argues that the group of inventors was much larger than originally thought. This is a personal recollection providing the first comprehensive behind-the-scenes account of the history of the integrated circuit.

Book excerpt: Excellent bridge between general solid-state physics textbook and research articles packed with providing detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors "The most striking feature of the book is its modern outlook ... provides a wonderful foundation. The most wonderful feature is its efficient style of exposition ... an excellent book." Physics Today "Presents the theoretical derivations carefully and in detail and gives thorough discussions of the experimental results it presents. This makes it an excellent textbook both for learners and for more experienced researchers wishing to check facts. I have enjoyed reading it and strongly recommend it as a text for anyone working with semiconductors ... I know of no better text ... I am sure most semiconductor physicists will find this book useful and I recommend it to them." Contemporary Physics Offers much new material: an extensive appendix about the important and by now well-established, deep center known as the DX center, additional problems and the solutions to over fifty of the problems at the end of the various chapters.

Book excerpt: Unrivalled in its coverage and unique in its hands-on approach, this guide to the design and construction of scientific apparatus is essential reading for every scientist and student of engineering, and physical, chemical, and biological sciences. Covering the physical principles governing the operation of the mechanical, optical and electronic parts of an instrument, new sections on detectors, low-temperature measurements, high-pressure apparatus, and updated engineering specifications, as well as 400 figures and tables, have been added to this edition. Data on the properties of materials and components used by manufacturers are included. Mechanical, optical, and electronic construction techniques carried out in the lab, as well as those let out to specialized shops, are also described. Step-by-step instruction supported by many detailed figures, is given for laboratory skills such as soldering electrical components, glassblowing, brazing, and polishing.

Book excerpt: In the New Series of Landolt-Bomstein the eleven volumes III/17a···i and III/22a,b present data on the properties of semiconductors on more than 6 000 pages with tables and (about 10 000) figures. The aim of the Series "Data in Science and Technology" is to built a bridge between the libraries, where such comprehensive handbooks are situated, and the laboratory. The first volume of this series, published in 1991, contains data on the most important groups of semiconductors, the group IV elements and the III-V compounds. From the wealth of data in the tables and figures of the Landolt-Bornstein volumes III/17a and III/22a,b about 10% were condensed into this first volume. It seemed not appropriate to condense to the same extent all the other material of the remaining nine subvolumes into several further DST volumes. Instead of it all remaining data have been put into the present volume. To do this some severe restrictions became necessary. They are explained in the Introduction, and the reader is asked to read it before using this book. I would further like to focus the attention of the reader on chapter 8, where the bridge between this DST volume and the LB sources is built by cross-references between both books. I do hope that this volume meets the needs of the physical community as a quick reference to basic semiconductor data and an access to the larger data collections on this field of physics.

Book excerpt: In semiconductor manufacturing, understanding how various materials behave and interact is critical to making a reliable and robust semiconductor package. Semiconductor Packaging: Materials Interaction and Reliability provides a fundamental understanding of the underlying physical properties of the materials used in a semiconductor package. By tying together the disparate elements essential to a semiconductor package, the authors show how all the parts fit and work together to provide durable protection for the integrated circuit chip within as well as a means for the chip to communicate with the outside world. The text also covers packaging materials for MEMS, solar technology, and LEDs and explores future trends in semiconductor packages.
