Book excerpt: Man is the Microcosm and miniature copy of the Macrocosm, the living witness of the Universal Law and its mode of action on Earth. It is the Neo-Platonists who applied the term Microcosm to man. Ancient philosophy called the Earth the Microcosm of the Macrocosm, and man the outcome of the two.

Book excerpt: While doubting the omnipotence of Gadadhara and her threats, we trust the word of honest pilgrims who saw “the shadow of their departed relatives.” The earth’s atmosphere is jam-packed with the astral remains of men and women disintegrating in the limbus of the Roman Catholics (kama-loka) images of empty shells (ghosts) that are magnetically drawn to those whom they had loved on earth. The Hindu practice of Pind Daan or Shraddha is a mere superstition, and any effects thereby produced are caused unconsciously by the strong belief of the temple’s priest. The best way to help a restless ghost is to stop thinking of it, and allow nature to take its course. The body being only the covering of the soul, at its dissolution we shall discover all the secrets of nature, and darkness shall be dispelled, says Seneca. No man or priest can impede the immutable law of nature (karma), especially after the death of the person that evolved it. The departed should be left alone to rest in peace, in the bosom of the earth. It is the cunning Brahmans who need the Pind Daan more than the Asuras, and the greedy Christian clergy who exploit the credulity of their pious laity by extorting money from the bereaved in useless ceremonies and prayers upon the dead.

Book excerpt: One hundred and forty years have passed like a dream, with much heart-sore and soaring hope, since the Theosophical Society was founded on 17 November 1875 in New York. We have decided to mark this auspicious date by releasing a series of hitherto private study notes and analyses of H.P. Blavatsky's Esoteric Section (E.S.) Instructions. The True Colours of Man, amplifies and clarifies E.S. Instructions I and II, aided by 31 original drawings, diagrams, and tables. The seven prismatic colours are direct emanations from the Seven Hierarchies of Compassion, each of which is the creator and source of the corresponding human principle. Each prismatic colour is the “Father of the Sound” which corresponds to it; Sound being the Word, or Logos, of its “Father-Thought.” Thus the Creative Force produces colours, sounds, and numbers, in the shape of rates of vibration, which compound and dissociate atoms and molecules. The Seven Primordial Lights, manifested from Light Unmanifested, are Divine Principles. The Principles of Man are bright reflections of Divine Principles, a Great Sacrifice; they are the seven-stringed lyre of Apollo. Colours and sounds are all spiritual numerals. Colour is Spirit (Atman), sound is Voice (Buddhi), proportion of numbers is Word (Higher Manas). Colours and sounds are associated with the Hierarchy of Compassion, the Manifested Logos. Colours–sounds–numbers proceed from 1 to 7 and not from 7 to 1, as erroneously shown in the spectrum of the prismatic colours. As the Seven Colours of the solar spectrum correspond to the Seven Rays, or Hierarchies, so each Ray has its seven divisions corresponding to the same series of colours. Esoterically, the right eye corresponds with Soul Wisdom or true knowledge; the left, with mere head learning. The Spiritual Man corresponds directly with the “coloured circles” of the Divine Prism which emanate from the One Infinite White Circle; the physical man emanates from the Sephiroth of the Kabbalah, the “voices” or “sounds” of Eastern Philosophy. “Voices,” however, are lower than colours. The lower Sephiroth are the seven physical planets. Our triple physical Sun, personified by the Upper Triad, is the Sephirothal Crown. The real Sephiroth are the Four Maharajas of The Secret Doctrine: Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus. The ancients considered as the most holy those organs which we now associate with feelings of shame and secrecy. The lower organs have been evolved to perform six functions on six distinct planes of action, besides a seventh, the lowest and purely terrestrial function on the physical plane. The physical body is not a “principle” and has no place in the sevenfold division. It is furnished by Mother Earth. Numbers and harmonious proportions guide the first differentiations of the Homogeneous Substance into heterogeneous elements. Perfect knowledge of the correspondences between colours, sounds, and numbers is the first requisite for students of Occultism. The Eye of Dangma will awaken only when the mouth is supressed. The Auric Egg is the monadic envelope and amnion of the physical man. Initiates, saints, and pure men can help others as well as themselves in their hour of need, with the aid of the God within, who has been enabled to act on the outward plane. Advanced students are invited to pronounce the Word before going to sleep and first thing upon awakening. Beginners, who cannot help going into crowds, are advised to wear either a ring containing some jewel of the colour of the presiding planet for the particular day of the week, or else of the metal sacred to it. A word of advice concerning Instructions I and II: students should strive to spiritualise these Instructions and avoid materialising them.

Book excerpt: The Secrets of Nature and of Occult Sciences cannot be revealed to the profane, who will desecrate them and turn into a weapon against humanity. They can only be imparted to a regular chela of many years’ standing, pledged to silence and secrecy during his successive initiations. Such Secrets do exist and are defended with one’s life. Occult Truth is Nature without the illusory veil of the Five Senses. Reason is purely human; instinct, an endowment of Deity. Sixth Sense is Reason over instinct, i.e., Mental Fire perceiving and registering the other Five. The Sixth Sense is spiritual clairvoyance, as opposed to psychic. The former is normal and real; the latter, abnormal and counterfeit. Not before developing his Sixth Sense, will the man of science concede the error of his theories as to the solar spectrum, unless he retracts his marked weakness for conditional and disjunctive syllogisms ending in eternal dilemmas. Appearances are deceitful, says a Master of Wisdom. While the astronomer has elucidated the visible relations of the orbs of space, he knows nothing of their inner constitution. Similarly, the knowledge of geologist and physiologist is confined to man’s outer shell. The Adept cannot cross bodily the limits of the solar system, yet he knows that far stretching beyond the telescopic power of detection there are systems upon systems, the smallest of which would, when compared with the system of Sirius, make the latter seem like an atom of dust imbedded in the great Gobi desert. Divine Wisdom alone can carry us to the perfect state of Jivanmukta, by teaching us what is true and what is false. Till then, the next best thing to learning what is true is to ascertain what is not true. With biographical notes on Frederick W.H. Myers, Sir William Crookes, and Johann Karl Friedrich Zöllner.

Every man’s reasoned opinion has a right to pass into the common auditory, for arguments are the currency of the intellect. In the great theatre of literature there are no authorized door-keepers: for our anonymous critics are self-elected. But they have lost all credit with wise men by unfair dealing: such as their refusal to receive an honest man’s money, because they anticipate and dislike his opinion, and his intellectual coin is refused under pretence that it is light or counterfeit — without any proof given either by the money scales, or by sounding the coin in dispute together with one of known goodness. Either the intolerant person is not master of the grounds on which his own faith is built — which therefore neither is or can it be his own faith — and he is angry, not at the opposition to Truth, but at the interruption of his own indolence and intellectual slumber. Or he has no love of Truth for its own sake; no reverence for the divine command to seek earnestly after it, which command, if it had not been so often and solemnly given by revelation, is yet involved and expressed in the gift of reason, and in the dependence of all our virtues on its development. There can be no end without means; and God furnishes no means that exempt us from the task and duty of joining our own best endeavours. Yet these are not only not forbidden by the self-obscurant Papists without a Pope, and the Protestants who protest only against all protesting, to examine and propose our doubts, so to proceed from a real desire to know the Truth; but we are repeatedly commanded so as not to find reasons for faith, but pretexts for infidelity. The light of truth shines beyond our mortal ken with unfading glory. Men have done their best to veil every beam and to replace the solar rays with the false glare of error and fiction; none more so than the bigoted, narrow-minded theologians and priests of every faith, casuists and perverters through selfishness. This world of ours in the natural enemy of every truth. Thou art this, but thou knowest it not. Truth is the supreme religion and Theosophy, the religion of the future. There is but one Absolute Truth in the Kosmos. Truth will unveil her beauty only to the heavenly man. A Master of Wisdom on the Spirit of Truth. This Spirit is a force that can neither be hindered nor stopped. Those who recognize it, and feel that this is the supreme moment of their salvation, will be uplifted by it beyond the illusions of the great astral serpent. The majority of the public Areopagus is generally composed of self-appointed judges, who have never made a permanent deity of any idol save their own personalities, their lower selves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview of the doctrine of septenary chains of worlds in the Solar Kosmos. A Master of Wisdom explains the struggle of Monadic Consciousness passing through seven man-bearing planets. At the dawn of a new Solar Manvantara progressed entities from the previous manvantara are born in the First Race of the First Round ahead of the Elementals, and remain as latent (inactive) spiritual force in the aura of the nascent world of the new manvantara until the stage of human evolution is reached. They will have then to accept to the last drop in the bitter cup of retribution. The passage of human races in-between planets being critical, requires the presence of a Dhyani-Chohan. Gautama is the fifth leader and spiritual teacher in this round on this planet, and the fourth who became Buddha. The one who will appear at the close of the Seventh Root-Race, before the occupation of the next higher planet by humanity, will again be a Dhyani-Chohan. At the beginning of each round, it is the duty of the First Race to choose fit recipients among its sons as vessels to contain the whole stock of knowledge to be divided among future races and generations until the close of that round. Every round on the descending arc is but a repetition in a more concrete form of the previous round, a grosser and more material copy, supervised and guided by special “Builders” and “Watchers.” Rounds and their role in the serial evolution of nascent material nature is explained cosmologically and anthropologically. Earth, as we know her now, had no existence before the Fourth Round. In the First Round our planet was fiery, cool, and radiant, like its ethereal men and animals; luminous, more dense and heavy during the Second; watery, during the Third. But the Elements have been since reversed: none were then as they are today. In the course of the rounds, Earth is being progressively spiritualised. She will reach her true ultimate form, corresponding inversely to that of man, after the Seventh Round at the close of the manvantara. There is a predestined moment in the geological life of our globe, as in past and future chronicles of races and nations, when effects will once again reconcile with causes, and the original balance restored. Genesis’ six days of creation meant six periods of evolution plus a seventh, that of culmination of perfection (not of rest), and correspond to our Seven Rounds and Races. Man was on earth in this round from the very beginning, having passed through all the kingdoms of nature in the previous three rounds. His inner constitution reflects the evolution of the first Three Root-Races. His Fifth Principle, Manas, was quickened at the close of the Third Race. That of the animals, remains inactive, paralysed. Though the human embryo has no more of the ape in it than of any other mammal, it contains in itself the totality of all kingdoms of nature. Intellect and materiality always precede intelligence and spirituality. Physical intelligence is but the mask of spiritual intelligence. There is a spiritual, a psychic, an intellectual, and an animal evolution, from the highest to the lowest, as well as a physical development from the simple and homogeneous, up to the more complex and heterogeneous. Mind moves matter. Without mind, the Divine Monad has no hold upon the mere form. It is like the breeze where there is no tree or branch to receive and harbour it. The evolution of the human body is governed by terrestrial forces; that of the thinking man, by spiritual forces. Every form on earth, every atom in Space, strives to follow the model placed for it in the Ideal Man. Molecularly constituted matter is not man’s grossest aspect. The vulgar and vile middle principle is the most offensive and sole stumbling block to progress. The Angels doomed to embodied existence are still in chains of flesh, under the darkness of ignorance. They remain unrecognised and unthanked in the injustice of the human heart until the “Great Day” that will come after the Seventh Round in post-manvantaric Nirvana. Then, the Dhyani-Buddhas and the Planetary Spirits, who laboured for long kalpas without condition or any hope for reward, will have their rest. “The chief object of our struggles and initiations is to achieve this union while yet on this earth. Those who will be successful have nothing to fear during the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds,” says a Master of Wisdom. Round 1 builds sthula-sharira. Round 2 forms linga-sharira. Round 3 breathes prana. Round 4 arouses kama. Round 5 uplifts manas. Round 6 activates buddhi. Round 7 merges the human monad into Atman, the Divine Monad. Appendix A. Esoterically, Manu Vaivasvata, the Progenitor of our Fifth Race, is one of forty-nine that emanated from the Root-Manu. Exoterically, he figures as seventh because this round, though the fourth, is in the preseptenary Manvantara, and the round itself is in its seventh stage of materiality or physicality. Manu Vaivasvata, though seventh in the order given, is the primitive Root-Manu of the fourth Human Wave while our Vaivasvata was but one of the seven Minor Manus, who preside over the Seven Races of our planet. Appendix B. Duration of each Planetary Round in this Minor Manvantara. Duration of humanity in this Round, on each Planet. Duration of human life-waves in this Round, on Planet Earth. Appendix C. Genesis’ three Adams untangled: Adam 1 is Kadmon or the “Heavenly Man” made “in the image and likeness of god,” i.e., Second Logos. Adam 2 was neither in the image nor in the likeness of god before he “ate the forbidden fruit,” i.e., the mindless, hence sinless, First Root-Race. Adam 3 is the Third Root-Race that separated, whose eyes opened outwardly and acquired knowledge of good and evil. The Jewish Kabbalists dwarfed the duration of each terrestrial round by six zeros. Allusions to the septenary constitution of earth and man, and to the Seven Rounds and Races, abound in the New as in the Old Testament. The Seven Sabbaths are seven pralayas, between seven manvantaras, or what we call rounds. More allusions about meat offerings to the Lord, the woman in purple and scarlet, the mystery of the woman and the beast, and other instances of farcical worship unpicked.

Its essence is Kama, permeated by Prana, which is the vehicle of Linga-sharira. Its red cells are drops of electric fluid, carrying Fohatic energy to Shtula-sharira. Its white cells ooze out of Linga-sharira, which is curled in the spleen: they are the Sweat-born of the Chhaya. Enriched by the life-giving Prana, white cells vitalise and energise every part of the body with Kama. When Kama leaves, the blood clots. But when lightning strikes, the blood doesn’t clot. Blood is the seventh and lowest principle of our body. The Sun is the first and highest. Animal blood is an individualised but fleeting state of the One Life. In ancient rites of initiation, “Atonement” meant “Baptism of Blood.” At the last moment of the Supreme Initiation, either the Hierophant or the “newly born,” the worthier of the two had to “die,” since two Adepts of equal power must not live. In its highest aspect, blood is sunlight-yellow; in its lowest, blood is red, the colour of Black Magic. The spilt blood of gods vivifies man and all that lives. Soul, life, and blood are synonymous in every language. By offering his blood to the Supreme God, mortal man can become immortal. Cain’s fratricide was blood-shedding, not life-taking. Atlanteans were the first anthropomorphists who worshipped form and matter. Cain and Abel are the sacrificed and sacrificing couple, both immolating themselves (as permutations of Adam and Eve, or the double-sexed Jehovah), and shedding their blood “of separation and union.” They are the “divine Hermaphrodite” of the Third Root-Race who, after the loss of spiritual potency, transformed humanity into wholly physical men. Life-giving water is the blood of the Earth. There is a fountain of life in the bowels of the Earth and in the North Pole. It is the blood of the Earth, an electro-magnetic current that circulates through its arteries and veins: it is stored in the “navel” of the Earth, which is located in the very centre of the North Pole. The Centre of Being is the blood of the World. From the central point in the circle of life (Animal Mundi), the Universal Archæus (Liquor Vitæ) diffuses itself over the whole body of the microcosm where it appears as blood, the Great Arcanum of Life. Fohat is the blood of the Sun. Throughout our solar system, of which the Sun is the heart, there is a regular circulation of vital fluid, the same as that of the human blood that throbs in the heart of every man, but whose Life Essence the lower mind dimly perceives.

Book excerpt: The key to the Mystery of Buddha and that of other Adepts lies in the correct understanding of the reflections in man of the Seven Principles or Powers in Nature, physically; and of the Seven Hierarchies of Being, intellectually and spiritually. The Seven Principles are the manifestation of One Indivisible Spirit, but only at the end of the Manvantara, when the seven merge once again into Absolute Unity, uncreated and impartite. The purified Egotistical Principle, the astral and personal ego of an Adept, though merging with its Highest Ego (Atma-Buddhi) may, for purposes of universal mercy and benevolence, separate itself from its divine Monad as to lead, on this plane of illusion and temporary being, a distinct independent conscious life of its own, under a borrowed illusive shape, thus serving at one and the same time a double purpose: the exhaustion of its own individual Karma, and the saving of millions of human beings less favoured than itself from the effects of mental blindness. Disembodied consciousness is not an effect, but a cause. Such consciousness is a ray of the all-pervading, limitless Flame, the reflections of which alone can differentiate. And, as such, consciousness is ubiquitous: it can be neither localized nor centred on any particular subject. Its effects alone are felt in the region of matter, but consciousness in itself remains the highest quality of the sentient spiritual principle within, the Divine Soul, and does not belong to the plane of materiality. After the death of the physical man, if he be an Initiate, his human consciousness is transformed into the independent Principle itself and, therefore, the former personal ego becomes pure and impersonal consciousness, untainted by any ego. The Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha (Enlightened) and a Nirvani through personal effort and merit, after having had to undergo all the hardships of every other neophyte — not by virtue of a divine birth, as thought by some. It was only the reaching of Nirvana while still living in the body on this earth, that was due to his having been in previous births high on the Path of Inner Wisdom. Once a man delivers himself from the snare of separateness, merging his self in the Universal Self, spiritual powers hitherto dormant in him are awakened, mysteries in invisible Nature are unveiled to him, and he becomes a Dhyani-Buddha — divine Flame and free Will in man. Then, as a Dhyani-Buddha himself, he can create mind-born Bodhisattvas. Twenty years after His outward death, Tathagata in His immense love and mercy for erring and ignorant humanity, refused Parinirvana in order that He might continue to help men on earth. Vajrasattva is the regent or chief of the Dhyani-Chohans or Dhyani-Buddhas, the Supreme Buddha; personal, yet never manifesting objectively. He is the “One without Beginning or End,” in short, the Logos of Buddhism. Vajrasattva is also Vajradhara, or Dorjechang. The two are one, and over them is the Supreme Unmanifested and Universal Wisdom that has no name. As two-in-one, They are the Power that subdues and conquers evil from the beginning, allowing it to reign only over willing subjects on earth, and having no power over those who despise and hate it. This dual personage has the same role assigned to it in canonical and dogmatic Tibetan Buddhism, as have Jehovah and the Archangel Mikael, the Metatron of the Jewish Kabbalists — which is an absurdity. The Roman Catholics identify Christ with Mikael, who is also his ferouer, or “face,” mystically. This is precisely the position of Vajrasattva in Northern Buddhism. For the latter, in His Higher Ego as Dorjechang, is never manifested, except to the seven Dhyani-Chohans, the primeval Builders. Esoterically, He is the Spirit of the Seven collectively, and Their highest principle or Atman. Metatron is the Greek Αγγελος (Messenger), or Great Teacher. Mikael fights Satan, the Dragon, and conquers him and his Angels. The War in Heaven of the Christian legend is based upon bad angels having discovered the magical wisdom of the good ones, and the mystery of the Tree of Life. Let anyone read simply the exoteric accounts in the Hindu and Buddhist Pantheons — the latter version being taken from the former — and he will find both resting on the same primeval, archaic allegory from the Secret Doctrine. At whatever age one puts off his outward body by free will, at precisely that age will he be made to die a violent death against his will in his next rebirth. Who, then, was punished by Karma? Karma cannot act unjustly. There is some terrible mystery involved in this story, one that no uninitiated intellect can ever unravel. Shankaracharya died at thirty-two years of age, or rather disappeared from the sight of his disciples, as the legend goes. All is darkness and mystery in it, for it is evidently written but for those who are already instructed. Lord Buddha lived one hundred years in reality though, having reached Nirvana in his eightieth year, he was regarded as one dead to the world of the living. It is not lawful to say any more, for the time has not yet come when nations are prepared to hear the whole truth. It will be sufficient to know that while Gautama Buddha remains merged in Nirvana ever since his death, Gautama Shakyamuni may have had to reincarnate — His dual inner personality being one of the greatest mysteries of Esoteric psychism. Karma exercises its sway over the Adept as much as over any other man. “Gods” can escape it as little as simple mortals. Karma is absolute justice and infallible in its selections. Thus Buddha’s first reincarnation was produced by Karma, and it led Him higher than ever; the two following were “out of pity” and [ . . . ]

Augoeides alone can redeem the soul. It is the personal god of every man. Augoeides is Atman, the Self, the mighty Lord and Protector, who shows Its full power to those who can hear the “still small voice.” It is the Inner Man released from its gross counterpart, bathing in the Light of His Essence, and reflecting the Spirit of Truth. Augoeides is our Luminous Self or Immortal Spirit. It alone can defend, champion, and vindicate Truth. And It will, if we follow Its behests, instead of demeaning It by our lower propensities. Augoeides is the Soul of the Spiritual Man lit by its own Light. The man who has conquered matter sufficiently to be illumined by his Augoeides, feels the Spirit of Truth intuitionally and cannot err in his judgment, for he is Illuminated. Then the brilliant Augoeides, the Divine Self, will vibrate in conscious harmony with both poles of the human Entity — the man of matter purified, and the ever pure Spiritual Soul. And the illuminated man, still living but no more longing, will stand in the presence of the Master Self, the Christos of the mystic Gnostic, blended, merged into with his Augoeides for ever. Augoeides is the Nous of the Greeks redeemed from the flesh, luciform and pure. When a soul begins understanding the works of the Father, it plucks the empyrean fruits of sentient life and flies from the shameless wing of Fate towards the true Light where it becomes luciform, ethereal, and pure. After a long rest in the Elysian fields the soul abandons her luciform abode and renews her earthly bonds by descending to objective existence. Augoeides sheds more or less Its radiance on the Inner Man — the Astral Soul. But It never flows forth into the living man, it just overshadows him. Upon Its last birth, the Monad, radiating with all the glory of its immortal Parent loses all recollection of the past, and returns to objective consciousness when the instinct of childhood gives way to reason and intelligence. Upon death of the personality, the Monad exultingly rejoins the radiant Augoeides and the two merge into one (with a glory proportioned to the spiritual purity of the past earth-life), the Adam who has completed the circle of necessity and is now freed from the last vestige of his physical encasement. Upon death of the soul the individual ceases to exist altogether, for his glorious Augoeides has left him. Adepts can project their Augoeides to any place of their choosing while their physical body is left entranced. The seventh and highest aspect of the “Luminous Egg,” or the individual magnetic aura in which every man is enveloped when it assumes the form of its body, it becomes the “Radiant” and Luminous Augoeides. It is this form which at times becomes the Illusionary Body (Mayavi-Rupa). Adepts rarely invoke their Augoeides, except for the instruction of some neophytes, and to obtain knowledge of the most solemn importance. With G.R.S. Mead’s essay on the Augoeides, and Bulwer-Lytton’s vision of his own Augoeides.

Book excerpt: A dialogue between the two Editors of Lucifer, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and Mabel Collins on astral bodies or doppelgängers. Lucifer was a monthly theosophical journal published from September 1887 to August, 1897, in London. There are three kinds of “doubles” or astral bodies: 1. The most material double: the Protean or plastic body (linga-sharira) of the gross physical body (shtula-sharira). 2. The middle, psycho-physical double: the “thought” or “dream” body (kama-manas), vehicle of animal desires (kama) and worldly thoughts (manas). Occultists call it the illusion-body (mayavi-rupa). 3. The truly spiritual double: the true Ego (monas + manas) is the causal body (karana-sharira) and chief cause of reincarnation, known in the trans-Himalayan schools as the karmic body. Adepts can project consciously, and dying persons unconsciously, an illusory appearance of their person to any distant location — while their physical body is left “entranced.” This phantom is termed mayavi-rupa. The ability to project a mayavic rupa depends upon the plastic power of the imagination and the higher faculties of the mind. Imagination is far more intense in those who are spiritually minded, than in those whose metaphysical part of the brain has atrophied, for it is by this very intense imagination that the former obtain the power of creation. However, when armed with a powerful imagination, a malicious person can turn unconsciously bad thoughts to a lethal weapon. Unless the evil-wisher is a high adept in Black Magic, in which case his karma is delayed, such a wish only comes back to roost. Warning to students of occultism: learn how to adapt your ideas and thoughts to your plastic potency. Otherwise, you are creating things by which you may be making bad karma.
