Acomunidade de Banco de Dados tem conhecimento de métodos para dar contadesta integração no contexto de federações de Bancos de Dados heterogêneos. Noentanto, atualmente existem descrições mais ricas e com mais possibilidades desemântica, tais como aquelas induzidas pelo conceito de ontologia. A comunidadede Banco de Dados tem considerado ontologias na solução do problema daintegração de Banco de Dados. O alinhamento ou merge de ontologias sãoalgumas das propostas conhecidas da comunidade de WEB semântica. Estetrabalho propõe o uso de métodos de merge de ontologias como solução aoproblema da construção de uma federação de ontologias como método integradorde fontes de dados. O trabalho inclui a implementação de um estudo de caso naferramenta Protegé. Este estudo de caso permite discutir aspectos deescalabilidade e de aplicabilidade da proposta como uma soluçãotecnologicamente viável.

A first step toward solving the problem of semantic heterogeneity is to formally specify the meaning of the terminology used in the integration system and to use that definition to access the integrated information. Ontologies are the most promising technology to achieve this aim. Real Time data translation is obtained through a mapping which contains the necessary instructions about the localisation of the information, the assembling directives and how the final data is presented. Therefore, the quality of mapping reflects accuracy and reliability of the data integration system. This book provides several contributions to research in data integration systems: starting from the architectural point of view, we define a system based on several ontologies that are used to describe the meta-data involved in the different integration steps. A novel formalisation of mapping language, able to deal efficiently with different data semantics is then presented, along with an innovative approach to automatically generate the mapping schema.

It is motivated by the Ontology 101 tutorial given for many years at the Semantic Technology Conference and then later from a semester-long university class. The book can serve as a course textbook or a primer for all those interested in ontologies. Ontologies have become increasingly important as the use of knowledge graphs, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and the amount of data generated on a daily basis has exploded. As of 2014, 90% of the data in the digital universe had been generated in the preceding two years, and the volume of data was projected to grow from 3.2 zettabytes to 40 zettabytes in the following six years. The very real issues that government, research, and commercial organizations are facing in order to sift through this amount of information to support decision-making alone mandate increasing automation. Yet, the data profiling, NLP, and learning algorithms that are ground-zero for data integration, manipulation, and search provide less-than-satisfactory results unless they utilize terms with unambiguous semantics, such as those found in ontologies and well-formed rule sets. Ontologies can provide a rich "schema" for the knowledge graphs underlying these technologies as well as the terminological and semantic basis for dramatic improvements in results. Many ontology projects fail, however, due at least in part to a lack of discipline in the development process.
