Book excerpt: In 2016, Shane Anderson made a vow to live according to the four core values of the Golden State Warriors to escape a decade of defeats—including divorce, debilitating spinal surgery and a suicide attempt. The basketball team’s values of joy, mindfulness, compassion, and competition became Anderson’s guiding principles, providing him a lens to investigate a myriad of social, personal, philosophical, and political issues, such as homelessness, the promises and failures of rave culture, and the limits of self-help. Part memoir, part essay, and part chronicle of the greatest five-year stretch of a team in NBA history, After the Oracle depicts the makes and misses of one expat trying to make a life worth living.

Book excerpt: In Hidden Wisdom, Professor Anderson introduces the activity of self-transformation or self-cultivation through meditative reflections on so-called nonsense poetry and myth. Central to his thesis is the claim that, “without a willing change in attitude from fear to radical trust, and from reactive bewilderment to active attention no person can leave anxious worry behind and ‘cross over’ to tranquility.” In the spirit of Don Quixote, Anderson contends, “that the road is better than the inn if for no other reason than that the sublime always looks ridiculous in the world of small talk and domestic ease. And yet it is precisely on the ground of the commonplace that every ideal must pitch and strike its tent or fail to own a habitation and a name.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condemned to hang after his raid on Harper’s Ferry, John Brown prophesied that the crimes of a slave-holding land would be purged away only with blood. A study of omens, maledictions, and inspired invocations, The Oracle and the Curse examines how utterances such as Brown’s shaped American literature between the Revolution and the Civil War. In nineteenth-century criminal trials, judges played the role of law’s living oracles, but offenders were also given an opportunity to address the public. When the accused began to turn the tables on their judges, they did so not through rational arguments but by calling down a divine retribution. Widely circulated in newspapers and pamphlets, these curses appeared to channel an otherworldly power, condemning an unjust legal system and summoning readers to the side of righteousness. Exploring the modes of address that communicated the authority of law and the dictates of conscience in antebellum America’s court of public opinion, Caleb Smith offers a new poetics of justice which assesses the nonrational influence that these printed confessions, trial reports, and martyr narratives exerted on their first audiences. Smith shows how writers portrayed struggles for justice as clashes between human law and higher authority, giving voice to a moral protest that transformed American literature.

The I Ching can entirely change the way you see things, helping you recognize and resolve anxieties and fears, fulfill your every desire; and release hidden energies. Developed over 3,000 years ago in China, it was originally intended only for rulers, but now can help anyone. Inspired by Carl Jung's insights into the psyche, and researched for more than 50 years through the aid of the Eranos Foundation of Switzerland, this fully revised edition offers much more than just a new translation. It presents the oracular core of the I Ching as a psychological tool and a way of connecting with the creative imagination. The original imagery is retained in its entirety, so all the symbols can interact with your mind just as dream images do. Consult it for any question that concerns you, and it will become an active sourcebook for the care of the soul.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking history of the human mind told through our experience of dreams—from the earliest accounts to current scientific findings—and their essential role in the formation of who we are and the world we have made. "A resounding case for the mystery, beauty and cognitive importance of dreams." —The New York Times What is a dream? Why do we dream? How do our bodies and minds use them? These questions are the starting point for this unprecedented study of the role and significance of this phenomenon. An investigation on a grand scale, it encompasses literature, anthropology, religion, and science, articulating the essential place dreams occupy in human culture and how they functioned as the catalyst that compelled us to transform our earthly habitat into a human world. From the earliest cave paintings—where Sidarta Ribeiro locates a key to humankind’s first dreams and how they contributed to our capacity to perceive past and future and our ability to conceive of the existence of souls and spirits—to today’s cutting-edge scientific research, Ribeiro arrives at revolutionary conclusions about the role of dreams in human existence and evolution. He explores the advances that contemporary neuroscience, biochemistry, and psychology have made into the connections between sleep, dreams, and learning. He explains what dreams have taught us about the neural basis of memory and the transformation of memory in recall. And he makes clear that the earliest insight into dreams as oracular has been elucidated by contemporary research. Accessible, authoritative, and fascinating, The Oracle of Night gives us a wholly new way to understand this most basic of human experiences.
