Older drivers (those 65 and older) are slightly likelier than drivers aged 25 to 64 to cause an accident, but drivers aged 15 to 24 are nearly three times likelier than older drivers to do so. The authors of this paper conclude that stricter licensing policies targeting older drivers would likely not improve traffic safety substantially.

Book excerpt: Older drivers are a growing population and are increasingly reliant on their vehicles. Physical, visual, cognitive and perceptual declines can develop gradually but have serious effects on driver risk. Self-awareness of the onset of age-related problems is critical to maximising older driver safety, and the promotion of active and appropriate self-regulation holds the most realistic key to managing the older driver "problem".

This book was released on 2011 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Multiple studies have shown the symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) can impair driving performance. Studies have also found elevated crash rates in drivers with PD, however, none have controlled for exposure or amount of driving. Although a few studies have suggested that drivers with PD may self-regulate (e.g., by reducing exposure or avoiding challenging situations), findings were based on self-report data. Studies with healthy older drivers have shown that objective driving data is more accurate than self-estimates. Purposes: The primary objectives of this study were to examine whether drivers with PD restrict their driving (exposure and patterns) relative to an age-matched control group and explore possible reasons for such restrictions: trip purposes, perceptions of driving comfort and abilities, as well as depression, disease severity and symptoms associated with PD.
