This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a really important, timely and relevant idea to bring together sources on the self-management of leadership development. The book is important because almost all leadership development relies to a great degree on the leader s capability to manage his or her personal development. It is timely because there is currently no single volume that covers the topic; and it is relevant because leadership is such an extremely important issue for the success of our organizations, countries and society in general. The editors have done a thoroughly professional job in identifying top quality authors and combining their contributions into a very worthwhile volume. Ivan Robertson, University of Leeds, UK Self-Management and Leadership Development offers a unique perspective on how leaders and aspiring leaders can and should take personal responsibility for their own development. This distinguished book is differentiated from other books on this topic with its view on the instrumental role played by individuals in managing their own development, rather than depending on others, such as their organization, to guide them. Expert scholars in the area of leadership emphasize the importance of self-awareness as the critical starting point in the process. Explicit recommendations are provided on how individuals can manage their own self-assessment as a starting point to their development. The contributors present insights and practical recommendations on how individuals can actively self-manage through a number of typical leadership challenges. Business school faculty teaching electives in leadership, and managers who engage in leadership development for themselves or others, should not be without this important resource. Consulting firms and training institutions offering leadership development programs and participants in MBA and executive development programs will also find it invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary theories are based on the assumption that societies gradually change from simple beginnings into even more complex forms. Early sociologists beginning with Auguste Comte believed that human societies evolve in a unilinear way- that is in one line of development. According to them social change meant progress toward something better. They saw change as positive and beneficial. To them, the evolutionary process implied that societies would necessarily reach new and higher levels of civilization. L.H Morgan believed that there were three basic stages in the process: savagery, barbarism and civilization. Auguste Comte’s ideas relating to the three stages in the development of human thought and also of society namely-the theological, the metaphysical and the positive in a way represent the three basic stages of social change. This evolutionary view of social change was highly influenced by Charles Darwin’s theory of Organic Evolution. Those who were fascinated by this theory applied it to human society and argued that societies must have evolved from the simple and primitive to that of too complex and advanced such as the western society. Herbert Spencer a British sociologist carried this analogy to its extremity. The present publication introduces the students of sociology to main concepts and theories in a lucid and interesting style. The textbook will enable the student to understand the process of social change and the way it affects development and progress. Contents: • Culture and Society • Groups and Organizations • Population, Urbanization, and Social Movements • The Rationalization of Society • Comprehensive Theory of Social Development • Social Inequality and Exclusion • Programmes/Schemes for Women’s Development • Social Aspects of Television • Intra and Inter-Cultural Diversities in the Era of Globalization • New Media as a Tool for Social Change • Television and Audience: Cultural Proximity

Book excerpt: "The richness of Krishna Ahoojapatel's analysis of the connections between women and the economy comes from the diversity of her engagements as a UN policymaker, an academic and an activist. Her analysis is therefore multidimensional. It is not a historical work, but captures four decades of changes in policies, in paradigms and in women's lives. It is rare to see such different strands come together in one person and one book." -Vandana Shiva, Founder/Director, Research Foundation of Science, Technology & Ecology, New Dehli.

Book excerpt: Youth, Gender and the Capabilities Approach to Development investigates to what extent young people have access to fair opportunities, the factors influencing their aspirations, and how able they are to pursue these aspirations and to carry out their life plans. The book positions itself in the intersection between capabilities, youth and gender, in recognition of the fact that without gender equality, capabilities cannot be universal and development strategies are likely to fail to achieve their full objectives. Within the framework of the human development and capabilities approach, Youth, Gender and the Capabilities Approach to Development focuses on examples in the areas of education, political spaces, and social practices that confront inequality and injustice head on, by seeking to advance young people’s capabilities and their agency to make valuable life plans. The book focuses how youth policies and issues can be approached globally from a capabilities-friendly perspective; arguing for the promotion of freedoms and opportunities both in educational and political spheres, with the aim of developing a more just world. With a range of studies from multiple and diverse national contexts, including Russia, Spain, South Africa, Tanzania, Morocco, Turkey, Syria, Colombia, India and Argentina, this important multidisciplinary collection will be of interest to researchers within youth studies, gender studies and development studies, as well as to policy makers and NGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling analysis of higher education's impact, updated with the latest data How College Affects Students synthesizes over 1,800 individual research investigations to provide a deeper understanding of how the undergraduate experience affects student populations. Volume 3 contains the findings accumulated between 2002 and 2013, covering diverse aspects of college impact, including cognitive and moral development, attitudes and values, psychosocial change, educational attainment, and the economic, career, and quality of life outcomes after college. Each chapter compares current findings with those of Volumes 1 and 2 (covering 1967 to 2001) and highlights the extent of agreement and disagreement in research findings over the past 45 years. The structure of each chapter allows readers to understand if and how college works and, of equal importance, for whom does it work. This book is an invaluable resource for administrators, faculty, policymakers, and student affairs practitioners, and provides key insight into the impact of their work. Higher education is under more intense scrutiny than ever before, and understanding its impact on students is critical for shaping the way forward. This book distills important research on a broad array of topics to provide a cohesive picture of student experiences and outcomes by: Reviewing a decade's worth of research; Comparing current findings with those of past decades; Examining a multifaceted analysis of higher education's impact; and Informing policy and practice with empirical evidence Amidst the current introspection and skepticism surrounding higher education, there is a massive body of research that must be synthesized to enhance understanding of college's effects. How College Affects Students compiles, organizes, and distills this information in one place, and makes it available to research and practitioner audiences; Volume 3 provides insight on the past decade, with the expert analysis characteristic of this seminal work.
