Book excerpt: The efforts made by the Indian development planners during the past decades are commendable in reducing poverty and other dimensions of human development. However, a number of tasks remain unfinished. Abject poverty is still a stark reality for millions of Indians. Also, wide gaps in human development among states, districts and social groups exist. There is an urgent need for more concerted efforts to achieve greater social and gender equality. Women in India are victims of a multiple socio-economic and cultural factors. They are an integral part of every economy. All round development and harmonious growth of a nation would be possible only when women are considered as equal partners in progress with men. Emancipation of women is a pre-requisite for a NATION'S ECONOMIC development and social upliftment. Poverty is the main obstacle for the improvement of the women. The role of women and the need to empower them are central to human DEVELOPMENT programs including poverty alleviation.

Book Synopsis Best Business Practices of Self Help Groups by : Sundari Suresh
Download or read book Best Business Practices of Self Help Groups written by Sundari Suresh and published by Beyond Line Publisher. This book was released on with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-help groups are crucial for employment generation for a large portion of the population. The acceptability of their produce and sustainability is very important for social-economic well-being of the group members. This book (based on my Ph.D. research) focuses on the acceptability of the products of self-help groups by its market and to explore the best business practices adopted by them. When we look at Corporate World, we find the likes of Dhirubhai Ambani, Tata, Birla, Godrej and many others who have made it ‘BIG’ through their indomitable spirit and indefatigable passion to ascend to the pinnacle of greatness. The common aspect of many legendary names in Corporate World is their tireless tirade to achieve their mark despite several handicaps, sometimes in the form of a humble background, financial crisis, social ostracism, tragedies and formal educational acquisitions. These are people who re-write history through the ink of their sweat, tears and blood to provide the world with the deepest thoughts of motivation to overcome the times of crises. All entrepreneurs have the same expectations, same emotions, same problems, same passion to come up in life and progress in their own business. The world deserves to know about these SHGs and their marketing practices to hold on to diversity and humanity together. I humbly present this book to the current and budding Women SHG fraternity to ‘realize’ their contribution towards our country’s economy.

Book Synopsis Women's self-help groups, decision-making, and improved agricultural practices in India: From extension to practice by : Raghunathan, Kalyani
Download or read book Women's self-help groups, decision-making, and improved agricultural practices in India: From extension to practice written by Raghunathan, Kalyani and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was undertaken as part of the Women Improving Nutrition through Group-based Strategies (WINGS) study, and was aimed at understanding ways to improve agricultural practices among women farmers in India. Effective agricultural extension is key to improving productivity, increasing farmers’ access to information, and promoting more diverse sets of crops and improved methods of cultivation. In India, however, the coverage of agricultural extension workers and the relevance of extension advice is poor. We investigate whether a women’s self-help group platform could be an effective way of improving access to information, women’s empowerment in agriculture, agricultural practices, and production diversity. We use cross-sectional data on close to 1000 women from 5 states in India, and employ nearest-neighbor matching models to match self-help group (SHG) and non-SHG women along a range of observed characteristics. We find that participation in an SHG increases women’s access to information and their participation in some agricultural decisions, but has limited impact on agricultural practices or outcomes, possibly due to financial constraints, social norms, and women’s domestic responsibilities. SHGs need to go beyond provision of information to changing the dynamics around women’s participation in agriculture to effectively translate knowledge into practice.
Book Synopsis GOVERNANCE AND POVERTY REDUCTION by : AMITA SINGH
Download or read book GOVERNANCE AND POVERTY REDUCTION written by AMITA SINGH and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty reduction in South Asia is a precondition for sustaining any form of reforms in governance. The new public management reforms which started in South Asia from Sri Lanka taking the initiative in 1977–78 have been a decisive break from the previously practised State driven protectionist system. Investment in the region has been rising and even per capita income has shown some increase, yet the state has not been able to lead these reforms appropriately and efficiently. Thus poverty has not been reduced, ordinary people continue to languish under government programmes and the socially excluded remain outside the mainstream decision making bodies. Governance in South Asia faces the single most important challenge of poverty reduction which continues to blunt and disfigure capacity, self esteem and service delivery system to the poor. This book attempts to bring out microlevel studies from many regions in South Asia to address issues of entrepreneurship, knowledge and professionalism. As an initiator of the idea on developing a critique to the straightjacketed ‘best practice’ research, this book questions the standard practice in evaluating administrative reforms as not being the true base for knowledge. Administrators need to balance capacity and control in every implementation programme. Confining to the knowledge of ‘best practices’ may conceal enormous amount of information from the ‘less than best’ practices which may be necessary to sustain good initiatives of public managers. This book highlights areas of active networking, partnerships and collaborations amongst state and non-state bodies, NGOs and specialist Science and Technical Organizations. The true nature of governance is explained and demonstrated through the processes which otherwise pass off undetected in macro-understanding of governance.

Book Synopsis Women’s Empowerment and Microcredit Programmes in India by : Annabel Dulhunty
Download or read book Women’s Empowerment and Microcredit Programmes in India written by Annabel Dulhunty and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Empowerment and Microcredit Programs in India examines the value of microcredit-based self-help groups (SHGs) for women in India and provides an alternative model for women’s empowerment programming. The microcredit sector continues to boom globally - with private investors, governments and multilateral financial institutions all investing substantial amounts in self-help group programming. Nowhere is this more evident than in India, where the industry has further been deregulated in recent years. Much of the rationale for increased investment in microcredit is based on the idea that it improves ‘women’s empowerment’. But is this true? Researchers have fiercely debated the value of microcredit programs for women, with some arguing that it is exploitative, and others contending that it is empowering. This book provides new insights into women’s empowerment and microcredit programming, elaborating on the themes of power, dignity, mobility and solidarity. It takes a nuanced view of the complexities surrounding self-help group programming and women’s empowerment and argues that the model of microcredit self-help group programming is key to whether it helps or harms women. By focusing on the experiences and voices of microcredit self-help group members in West Bengal, India, this book elaborates on the idea of microcredit models existing on a continuum, from ‘smart economics’ to more holistic feminist versions of programming. It will be of interest to scholars in development studies, anthropology, sociology, gender studies and public policy and Asian Studies.
