Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using clinical examples, the contributors demonstrate the 'good enough' healing power of carefully constructed and supervised groups conducted by therapists who apply both Kohut's self psychological concepts and those currently evolving from intersubjectivity throughout the world. Among the topics covered in this volume are: - the recent advances in hermeneutics, self psychology and intersubjectivity theory - the universal need for a group object - Kohut's thinking on archaic and mature twinship - the applicability of new infant research - the need to examine early childhood multiple cross-cultural selfobject and traumatic experiences within transferences - the utilization of a co-therapy model - and how to create optimal group environments. Mixing new theoretical developments with clinical research and practice, Self Experiences in Group breaks new ground and illustrates how these concepts can be applied to work at infant, child or adult level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Self Experiences in Group in 1998—the first book to apply self psychology and intersubjectivity to group work—there have been tremendous advancements in the areas of affect, attachment, infant research, intersubjective regulation, motivational theory, neurobiology, philosophy, somatic understanding, and trauma. Carefully edited by Irene Harwood, Walter Stone, and Malcolm Pines, Self Experiences in Group, Revisited is a completely revised and updated application of self-psychological and intersubjective perspectives to couples, family, and group work, incorporating many of these recent findings and theories of the past decade. Divided into five sections, the contributors take an updated approach to the prenate and neonate in group; couples and the family in group; group theory, technique, and application; working with trauma; and group processes and artistic applications. Throughout, the reader is engaged in affectively understanding what is experienced by individuals in the regulation and dysregulation of self as part of the interpersonal relating, learning, and change that can occur in groups. Contributors: Mary Dluhy, Barbara Feld, Darryl Feldman, Vivian Gold, Irene Harwood, Gloria Batkin Kahn, Joseph Lichtenberg, Louisa Livingston, Marty Livingston, Jane van Loon, Judy McLaughlin-Ryan, Malcolm Pines, John Schlapobersky, Robert Schulte, Rosemary Segalla, Emanuel Shapiro, Walter Stone, Paula Thomson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stone's central interests include the development of the self, empathy, narcissism, shame, envy, rage and the group-self. He is concerned with several aspects of clinical technique and is especially sensitive to our co-creation of so-called "difficult patients". His understanding of dreams as both personal and group products which manifest visual narratives will be of particular interest to students of the social and collective unconscious. Stone's work with narcissistic and borderline patients developed in parallel with his work with the chronically mentally ill, who are often institutionalised. He demonstrates that group therapy for such patients is not only a matter of containment and holding in the service of administrative control, but also involves interpretative work based on an understanding of the primary need for a good enough self-object.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) has gained international acclaim as an efficient treatment for patients with borderline personality disorder. The approach is also helpful for other personality disorders and conditions that are difficult to treat, e.g. addiction and eating disorders. MBT consists of a psychoeducational, an individual, and a group therapy component. This is the first comprehensive manual for mentalization-based group therapy. The author has developed the manual in close cooperation with Anthony Bateman and a team of group analysts. It covers all the aspects of MBT which are necessary to produce an informed and qualified group therapist. The book covers the theory behind mentalization and borderline personality disorder (especially its evolutionary roots), the structure of MBT and a discussion of previous experiences with group psychotherapy for borderline patients. The core of the book explains the main principles of MBT-G and provides a powerful means for ensuring that therapists adhere to these principles in a qualified way. The last part contains a full transcript from a real MBT group composed of borderline patients. As the first book dedicated to Group MBT, this book is a valuable and unique addition to the Mentalization literature.

Book excerpt: The editors of the present volume were also privileged to collaborate on an earlier book, Intimacy, also published by Plenum Press. In our pref ace to that volume, we described the importance and essence of inti macy and its centrality in the domain of human relationships. After reading the contributions to that volume, a number of issues emerged and pressed for elaboration. These questions concerned the nature and parameters of intimacy. The natural extension of these con cerns can be found in the current work, Self-Disclosure in the Therapeutic Relationship. The editors, after careful consideration of the theoretical, philo sophical, and technical literature, are impressed by the relationship between intimacy and appropriate self-disclosure. Self-disclosure, in this context, refers to those behaviors that allow oneself to be suffi ciently revealing so as to become available for an intimate relationship. Levenson has referred to psychotherapy as the demystification of expe rience wherein intimacy emerges during the time that interpersonal vigilance diminishes through growing feelings of safety. Interpersonal experience can be demystified and detoxified by disclosure, openness, and authentic relatedness. This is not an easy process. Before one can be open, make contact, or reach out with authenticity, one must be available to oneself. This means making contact with-and accepting-the dark, fearful, and of ten untouched areas within the person that are often hidden even from oneself. The process of therapy enables those areas to gain conscious ness, be tolerated, and be shared with trusted others.
