This study examines the merits of an ethnic enclave economy in boosting self-employed immigrant entrepreneurial ventures compared with the mainstream economy. Macro and micro accountings to perpetuate self-employment between two large Chinese clusters are included. A comparative analysis of two ethnic enclave economies in Flushing, Queens and Monterey Park City, Los Angeles is presented in this paper with the intent to identify similar and/or different ways that factors interact to facilitate selfemployment in ethnic enclaves. I hope to demonstrate that the external configuration structured by institutional frameworks and local contingencies at the two localities, in juxtaposition with internal forces such as human and social capital of immigrants, result in underlying divergences and similarities in the two ethnic enclave economies. I underscore the importance of both objective and subjective factors in influencing self-employment, i.e., that a combined force emerges from both macro-institutions and micro-environment projects on what, how, and where human capital and social capital are generated and retained, thereby influencing the incidence of self-employment within an ethnic enclave through the function of human and social capital of an immigrant. In particular, I stress the utility of an ethnic enclave economy as the breeding ground that prepares the fundamental setting for ethnic self-employment. Furthermore, being embedded in two heterogeneous enclave economies yields major differentials in accounting for the entry of self-employment within the enclave. Two iii data files are synthesized to yield a comparative analysis of ethnic enclaves in Flushing and Monterey Park City: the Survey of Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (ICPSR, 2004) and the Survey of Immigration Second Generation in Metropolitan New York (ICPSR, 2000). Major findings imply that the structure of an ethnic enclave economy shaped by the interplay of global and national conditions and local contingence lays the ground for the formation of human and social capital of individual immigrants. Such a condition is strongly relevant to ensuring economic advancement through self-employment. iv.

Book excerpt: Using survey information about characteristics of personal contacts, linked with administrative register information on employment status one year later, this study paper shows that unemployment survey respondents with many employed acquaintances have a higher job finding rate. Settlement in a socially deprived neighborhood may, therefore, hamper individual labor market outcomes because of lack of employed contacts. The book investigates this hypothesis by exploiting a unique natural experiment that occurred between 1986 and 1998 when refugee immigrants to Denmark were assigned to municipalities quasi-randomly, which successfully addresses the methodological problem of endogenous neighborhood selection. Taking account of location sorting, living in a socially deprived neighborhood does not affect labor market outcomes of refugee men. Furthermore, their labor market outcomes are not affected by the overall employment rate of men living in the neighborhood, but positively affected by the employment rate of non-Western immigrant men and co-national men living in the neighborhood. This is strong evidence that immigrants find jobs in part through their employed immigrant and co-ethnic contacts in the neighborhood of residence and that a high quality of contacts increases the individual's employment chances and annual earnings. In popular Western wisdom, the restaurants, pagodas, and red lanterns are intrinsically equated with a self-contained, immigrant Chinese district, an alien enclave of ‘the East’ in ‘the West’. By the 1980s, when these Western societies had largely given up their racially discriminatory immigration policies and opened up to Asian immigration, the dominant conception of Chinatown was no longer that of an abject ethnic ghetto: rather, Chinatown was now seen as a positive expression of multicultural heritage and difference. By the early 21st century, however, these spatial and cultural constructions of Chinatown as an ‘other’ space – whether negative or positive – have been thoroughly destabilised by the impacts of accelerating globalisation and transnational migration. This book provides a timely and much-needed paradigm shift in this regard, through an in-depth case study of Sydney’s Chinatown. It speaks to the growing multilateral connections that link Australia and Asia (and especially China) together; not just economically, but also socially and culturally, as a consequence of increasing transnational flows of people, money, ideas and things. Further, the book elicits a particular sense of a place in Sydney’s Chinatown: that of an interconnected world in which Western and Asian realms inhabit each other, and in which the orientalist legacy is being reconfigured in new deployments and more complex delimitations.
