Book excerpt: Material Modeling with the Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) Approach: Theory and Practical Applications provides readers with knowledge of material viscoplasticity and robust modeling approaches for predicting plastic deformation of crystal aggregates. Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) is the identifier of a computer code developed for the specific mechanical regime addressed (visco-plastic: VP) and the approach used (self-consistent: SC) meant to simulate large plastic deformation of aggregates, thermo-elastic material deformation, as well as predict stress-strain response, texture evolution of aggregates and stress-strain state inside grains. This approach is very versatile and able to tackle arbitrary material symmetry (cubic, hexagonal, trigonal, orthorhombic, triclinic), twinning, and multiphase aggregates. It accounts for hardening, reorientation and shape change of individual grains, and can be applied to the deformation of metals, inter-metallics and geologic aggregates. Readers will have access to a companion website where they can download code and modify its input/output or add subroutines covering specific simulation research needs. Highlights a modeling approach that allows readers to accurately predict stress-strain response, texture evolution of aggregates, and internal stress states inside grains while also accounting for hardening, reorientation and shape change of individual grains Features modeling techniques that can be applied to the deformation of metals, inter-metallics and geologic aggregates Covers the theoretical aspects of homogeneous effective medium models as they apply to the simulation of plasticity and elasticity Provides several practical examples and applications of materials of different symmetry subjected to different deformation conditions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling of Engineering Materials presents the background that is necessary to understand the mathematical models that govern the mechanical response of engineering materials. The book provides the basics of continuum mechanics and helps the reader to use them to understand the development of nonlinear material response of solids and fluids used in engineering applications. A brief review of simplistic and linear models used to characterize the mechanical response of materials is presented. This is followed by a description of models that characterize the nonlinear response of solids and fluids from first principles. Emphasis is given to popular models that characterize the nonlinear response of materials. The book also presents case studies of materials, where a comprehensive discussion of material characterization, experimental techniques and constitutive model development, is presented. Common principles that govern material response of both solids and fluids within a unified framework are outlined. Mechanical response in the presence of non-mechanical fields such as thermal and electrical fields applied to special materials such as shape memory materials and piezoelectric materials is also explained within the same framework.

Book excerpt: The book presents twelve state of the art contributions in the field of numerical modeling of materials subjected to large strain, high strain rates, large pressure and high stress triaxialities, organized into two sections. The first part is focused on high strain rate-high pressures such as those occurring in impact dynamics and shock compression related phenomena, dealing with material response identification, advanced modeling incorporating microstructure and damage, stress waves propagation in solids and structures response under impact. The latter part is focused on large strain-low strain rates applications such as those occurring in technological material processing, dealing with microstructure and texture evolution, material response at elevated temperatures, structural behavior under large strain and multi axial state of stress.

Book excerpt: The book presents a series of concise papers by researchers specialized in various fields of continuum and computational mechanics and of material science. The focus is on principles and strategies for multiscale modeling and simulation of complex heterogeneous materials, with periodic or random microstructure, subjected to various types of mechanical, thermal, chemical loadings and environmental effects. A wide overview of complex behavior of materials (plasticity, damage, fracture, growth, etc.) is provided. Among various approaches, attention is given to advanced non-classical continua modeling which, provided by constitutive characterization for the internal and external actions (in particular boundary conditions), is a very powerful frame for the gross mechanical description of complex material behaviors, able to circumvent the restrictions of classical coarse–graining multiscale approaches.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal parts manufactured via the powder bed fusion (PBF) process have drawn tremendous interest in the automotive industry. While numerous studies have shown the unique microstructure of the metal from the PBF process, significant variation of material properties with process parameters has been widely observed, indicating that huge amounts of experiments are required during material characterization. Thus, multiscale material modeling approaches are in great demand so that the properties of the metals via the PBF process can be predicted with confidence, to save costs and time during the design stage. In the present study, a multiscale modeling approach is proposed in which the microscale and mesoscale models are considered in finite element analysis. At the microscale, the model captures the microstructure characteristics within the melt pools to predict the representative properties resulting from epitaxial grain morphology and orientation. The properties are then homogenized and input into a mesoscale model in which the fish-scale-like melt pools and boundaries between them are modeled. Stochastic reconstruction of the micro- and mesoscale models are performed based on statistical microstructure information obtained from optical micrographs and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Predicted mechanical properties are compared with experimental data to demonstrate the capability of the approach. The study keeps focus on AlSi10Mg built by selective laser melting (SLM), while universal applicability to other material systems is expected.
