Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aquatic herbicide Sonar AS (fluridone) is being used in Northern tier states to selectively control the submersed exotic species Eurasian watermilfoil (Myrtophyllum spicatum L.) growing in lakes and reservoirs. Reliable quantitative information linking changes in the submersed plant community following fluridone applications is limited, particularly with respect to water residue records; therefore, a study was conducted to investigate the impact of low-dose fluridone treatments on the aquatic plant communities in eight lakes of southern Michigan The main objective of the study was to determine whether submersed plant species diversity and frequency were impacted by low-dose fluridone applications in the year of treatment, when targeting for Eurasian watermilfoil control. Secondary objectives included (a) determining fluridone effectiveness on the exotic submersed species curiyleafpondweed (Potamogeton cnspus L.), (b) evaluating shifts in plant species diversity at 1-year posttreatment, (c) measuring the effect of thermal stratification on water column distribution of fluridone residues, and (d) verifying laboratory-derived results of fluridone concentration and exposure time relationships with respect to efficacy against Eurasian watermilfoil.

Book excerpt: Herbicide concentration and exposure time relationships were developed for 2,4-D and the control of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.), under laboratory conditions using concentrations, exposure times, and biomass similar to field conditions. Fourteen 2,4-D concentrations (0.5,1.0, and 2.0 mg acid equivalent (ae)/l) and exposure time (12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 hr) combinations were tested. Eurasian watermilfoil control was based on plant injury incurred, relative to that of untreated plants, and harvested biomass (4 weeks after treatment). Plant injury increased with increasing concentrations and exposure times to a threshold above which control was achieved. Severe Eurasian watermilfoil injury occurred in the 0.5 mg ae/l for 72-hr, 1.0 mg ae/l for 36-hr, and 2.0 mg ae/l for 24-hr exposures. Eurasian watermilfoil control was established in the 1.0 mg ae/l for 48 hr, and 2.0 mg ae/l for 36-hr, and 48-hr exposures. Control can be predicted for Eurasian watermilfoil treatments in both dynamic and static aquatic environments when plants remain in contact with 2,4-D concentrations greater than the developed threshold levels. Aquatic plant control, Eurasian watermilfoil; Herbicides. (mjm).

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the evaluation of two species of insects for the biological control of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.). One of the species is a native weevil, Litodactylus leucogaster (Marsh.), which attacks the flower spikes, and the other is an accidentally introduced European moth, Acentria nivea (Oliver), whose larvae feed on the leaves and stems. The biology of L. leucogaster was studied in detail and host-specificity tests were conducted with adults and larvae. Since it was determined to be specific to watermilfoils, it was released at Crystal River, Florida, on 22 August 1979. Two adults were captured at Crystal River in November indicating possible establishment. The pyralid moth, A. nivea, was difficult to rear in the laboratory. Since the females were active only one night, successful matings were rare in the small colony. Larval production was best in containers that were minimally disturbed. the larvae required water temperatures below 22 C for development though they could survive short periods at higher temperatures. The larvae were not specific to milfoil; however, A. nivea may still be of interest as a member of a complex of species which attack milfoil. (Author).

This book was released on 2002 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One method of selectively managing the invasive submersed plant Myriophyllum spicatum L. (Eurasian watermilfoil) in northern lakes is to treat the entire water body with low doses (6 to 8 micrograms/L) of the herbicide fluridone (1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-(3-(trifluromethyl)- phenyl)-4(1H)-pyridinone). A 3-year study (1999-2001) was conducted at Burr Pond and Lake Hortonia, Vermont, to determine whether submersed plant diversity and frequency of occurrence were impacted by whole-lake, low-dose fluridone applications in the year of treatment, and beyond, when targeting for control of M. spicatum. Bathymetric maps of both lakes were developed using fathometers and global positioning system techniques in May 2000, which was matched with thermocline data (29 May 2000 - Lake Hortonia only) to determine the amount of herbicide required to achieve the target concentration (6 micrograms/L of fluridone) in each lake. On 4 June 2000, Burr Pond (34.5 ha; average depth, 4.4 m) and Lake Hortonia (195 ha; average depth, 5.8 m) were treated to achieve a nominal rate of 6 micrograms/L of fluridone using the aqueous suspension (AS) formulation Sonar(R) AS. Both lakes were subsequently treated with a booster application of Sonar AS on 9 July 2000, 35 days after the initial treatment to re-set the whole-lake concentration to 6 micrograms/L of fluridone. Water samples were collected at various locations on both lakes from immediately prior to application through 116 days after treatment (DAT), and were analyzed for fluridone using immunoassay.
