Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Scottish Philosophy of Common Sense Now, Locke's doctrine admitted Of two, and only two, answers. One Of these was given by Berkeley, and led to the scepticism Of Hume. The other was given by Reid. For Locke perception involves three elements: the percipient, the idea perceived, and the thing and it is assumed that the idea is somehow a copy Of the external reality. Both Berkeley and Reid saw clearly the difficulties Of the doctrine Of Representative Perception. If the mind is confined to its own ideas and is cut Off from immediate knowledge of the real world how is it to know if its ideas do or do not agree w1th things? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common sense philosophy was one of eighteenth-century Scotland's most original intellectual products. It developed as a viable alternative to modern philosophical scepticism, known as the 'Ideal Theory' or 'the way of ideas'. The nine specially written essays in this volume explore the philosophical and historical significance of common sense philosophy in the Scottish Enlightenment. Thomas Reid and David Hume feature prominently as influential authors of competing ideas in the history and philosophy of common sense. The contributors recover anticipations of Reid's version of common sense in seventeenth-century Scottish scholasticism; revaluate Reid's position in the realism versus sentimentalism dichotomy; shed new light on the nature of the 'constitution' in the anatomy of the mind; identify changes in the nature of sense perception throughout Reid's published and unpublished works; examine Reid on the non-theist implications of Hume's philosophy; show how 'polite' literature shaped James Beattie's version of common sense; reveal Hume's response to common sense philosophers; explore English criticisms of the Scottish 'school', and how Dugald Stewart's refashioning of common sense responded to a new age and the British reception of German Idealism. In recovering the ways in which Scottish common sense philosophy developed during the long eighteenth century, this volume takes an important step toward a more complete understanding of 'the Scottish philosophy' and British philosophy more broadly in the age of Enlightenment.

This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise and Fall of Scottish Common Sense Realism examines the ways in which five Scottish philosophers - Lord Kames (1696-1782), Thomas Reid (1710-1796), Dugald Stewart (1753-1828), Sir William Hamilton (1788-1856), and James Frederick Ferrier (1808-1864) - tackled a problem which has haunted Western philosophy ever since Descartes: that of determining whether any form of perceptual realism is defensible, or whether the very idea of a material world existing independently of perception and thought is more trouble than it is worth. This century-long conversation about the relation between mind and world led these five Scots to think uncommonly hard about a host of challenging issues in epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and meta-philosophy. In order to present each philosopher's views in a fair and reasonably charitable light, Douglas McDermid has tried to identify the main problems each was attempting to solve, to relate his work to that of his predecessors where possible, to describe the mistakes (real or perceived) he was particularly anxious to correct, to explain the internal logic of his position, and to discuss some of the main objections which he anticipated and tried to rebut. McDermid's hope is that even seasoned students of the realism controversy may learn something new and valuable from this exercise, if only because he has chosen to focus not on the usual suspects - Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant - but on a fresh and undervalued cast of characters.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Philosophy in Its National Development This work was originally intended to form one of a series, projected by Professor Knight of St. Andrews, on Philosophy in its National Developments. Though the idea of such a series has been abandoned, little excuse will, I hope, be required for the appearance of this volume. The philosophy of Scotland deserves, indeed, to be treated as a national development. Every philosophy is an expression of the spirit of its time; and the mental life of Scotland is clearly mirrored in its intellectual and moral philosophy. The Scotland which gave birth to men so diverse as John Knox and Robert Burns produced also David Hume, and Thomas Reid, and Sir William Hamilton; and its philosophies of scepticism and common sense, though influenced by the thought of other countries, have drawn their special sustenance from the national history and character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Reid (1710-96) is increasingly being seen as a highly significant philosopher and a central figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. This edition of Reid's classic philosophical text in the philosophy of mind at long last gives scholars a complete critically edited text of the Inquiry. The critical text is based on the fourth life-time edition (1785). A selection of related documents showing the development of Reid's thought, textual notes, bibliographical details of previous editions, and a full introduction by the editor makes this an important contribution to the study of this increasingly respected philosopher.Key Features:*Complete, critically edited text of the Inquiry accompanied by a judicious selection of manuscript evidence relating to its composition.*Comprehensive Introduction providing an historical and philosophical account of the formation of the Inquiry.*Detailed textual notes which include bibliographical details and allusions, translations, references to secondary literature and selected passages from Reid's MSS.
