Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Literature of Theism This volume has been prepared with the aim of bringing together within a small compass some of the leading positions in the philosophy of religion. It is agreed on all hands, in our day, that no one, except here and there an original genius, can expect to be in line with twentieth-century thought who dispenses himself from reference to the positions held by great minds. It is by training his mind in their high thoughts that he can expect to win power and insight for himself. Such training may be extended indefinitely, and the vastness of the field tends, no doubt, to discourage many from ever entering upon it - they attain to belief, or disbelief, on authority, or by reference to some single influence with which they have been brought into contact, quite casually perhaps. But in the range of religious arguments there are some which are of cardinal importance, and among the men who have given to the world their meditations there are some who are acclaimed as masters. The volume contains a selection of such principal arguments, and our only doubt as to its value lies in the possibility that our choice, restricted for space as it is, may not have been the best that could have been made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Theism It was my original intention to fill the latter half of the volume with notes, referring to the literature of the subject; and, with this end in view, I have kept it back for two years. That literature, however, is so vast, and is becoming so increasingly complex, that I have thought it better to print these Aspects of Theism1 very much as they were spoken, and to offer them without notes, as a short study of a great problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Theism: A Brief and Popular Survey of the Evidence Upon Which It Rests: And the Objections Urged Against It Considered and Refuted My reason for composing the present work is a special one. I have been frequently asked to recommend a book, level to the understandings of that large number of persons, whose engagements in the active duties of life render it impossible for them to devote themselves to special studies, which sets forth in a popular form the chief reasons on which the belief in the Being of a God who possesses the attributes which the Christian revelation attributes to Him, is founded, and points out the fallacy of the current and widespread anti-Theistic theories of the present day. This I have felt myself unable to do. Several admirable works dealing with those evidences, and answering the objections of anti-Theists, exist, which leave little to be desired; but as far as I am aware, they are, without exception, addressed to the higher orders of thought. On the other hand, smaller works, and works of less pretensions, for the most part deal with particular aspects of the question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theism: Or, the Religion of Common Sense Some T heists, far more able than I am, have written on the same themes, but I stand alone in one respect. I have founded a Church and constructed a form of worship of the one living and true God, which has proved, and is still proving more and more, a spiritual help and comfort to many souls. Theism is not only a theology, but a religion. We Theists, one and all, say and feel that mere intellectual assent to the truths of Theism is of little or no value without giving our whole hearts to God in trust, love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theism: A Survey of the Paths That Lead to God, Chiefly in the Light of the History of Philosophy Philosopuv has been prevailingly theis tic; science, atheistic - without God. In no opprobrious sense is this said of science; its professed limitations plausibly and per haps really, from the standpoint of mere method, exclude the express recognition of God, though Sir Isaac Newton, and some other physicists of his day, thought and Wrote differently. Philosophy, if not always expressly a search for God, has, in its effort to understand reality as a whole, usually found him, issuing by the avenues of meta physics ou the high table-lands of theolo gy with their limitless outlook. Science has rested in matter, force, and law; asking and giving little or no explanation of these data. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Every scientific hypothesis is an attempt to solve the problem presented by a certain class of facts; and the proof of the hypothesis always consists, not in its being impregnably deduced according to the canons of formal logic, but in its furnishing the only adequate solution Of the facts. The geologist finds traces of fire in the rocks, and he explains them by assuming that the earth was once molten. Now even allowing this conclusion to be just, he would not pretend that he had demonstrated the original fluidity of the earth, but only that he had given a rational solution of the problem contained in certain geological facts. SO with the neb ular, the atomic, the ether, the evolution theories, etc.; they are all solutions of problems, and our faith in them is based entirely upon their adequacy to the facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Theistic and Christian Belief I must expect, that, among the readers who may be interested in the general subject of this volume, some will be less attracted by the sections that are concerned with the philosophical objections to theism, or with the critical evi dence in behalf of the genuineness of the Gospels. But even this class, I trust, will find the major part of the book not altogether ill-suited to their wants. I venture to ih dulge the hope, that they may derive from it some aid in clearing up perplexities, and some new light upon the nature of the Christian faith and its relation to the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Theism, Its Claims and Sanctions Analysis is the best key to clear and easy thought. Systems of truth, like machines, are often so complicated as to baffle thought, until they are taken to pieces. Theism is such a system. This fact has been observed in the following treatise. Arguments have been correlated and each assigned to its proper place. Elements in each argument have been carefully distinguished and separately set out. The character of every part, and its relation to the whole, have been invariably indicated. And the entire discussion has been simplified, as far as possible. The author has three objects in view: 1. To construct a progressive argument which shall be, not only logical in its methods and correct in its general conclusions, but likewise defensible in each individual part and item of it. 2. To free the subject, as far as may be, from those obscurities and difficulties of which students in Theism are wont to complain. 3. To present the subject - without dodging any of its profound problems - in such clear and simple manner as to commend it to the general reader who is willing to think as he reads. The theist ought not to be satisfied with few readers, especially when the atheist is writing for the many. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Faith Since the substance of the following treatise was written, some remarkably able works, handling many of the topics here discussed, have appeared, notably A Study of Orzgz'fls, by Dr. Pressense T/ze P/zz'losop/zy of Tkez'sm, by Dr. Ward T/ze Basis of T/zez'sm, by Dr. Harris P/zysiml cma' Mbrallaw, by Rev. W. Arthur, m.a. And T/ze Unify of Nature, by the Duke of Argyll. This fact led me to consider whether these productions met the want I had aimed at supplying, and thus rendered the publication of my manuscript superfluous. The result was a con viction that, notwithstanding the rare excellence of these works, there was still need for such a book as I had attempted to provide. I therefore issue this production in the hope that it may, in some degree, take part in promoting the cause of truth and human well-being. Unbelief continues to project its shot and shell into the lines of Christian Theism and, though its former attacks have been well met, it must not be left to repeat them unresisted. The present volume only aspires to be one of many contributions, made in vindication of those great principles which underlie the experience and practice of true religion.
