Gould With Memoirs of His Life The various Christian testimonies which they were thus led to promulgate to the world, were parts of one great divine law, fruit of one tree - branches of the one stem, - even of the princi ple of Light and Life in the hearts of the faithful. They found that a close adherence to this holy law written in the heart brought them into a true unity and fellowship with Christ and one with another; and they saw that all departures from the unity of this faith had their beginning in a departure from this law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, by which an entrance was allowed to the Tempter to beguile and lead astray; so that none who had once known the truth could depart from and oppose any part of this fabric of doctrines, but they who had first de parted in heart from that which was the corner-stone thereof. Thus their endeavors to restore transgressors and those who had fallen away from any of the testimonies of their profession, were principally or primarily directed towards awakening again a sin cere and humble dedication of heart to the Lord in his inward manifestations; knowing that if the Witness for truth could be raised again into dominion in that heart, the branches which had withered would soon recover their vitality and health. Yet they ceased not, for all this, to point out the errors which such were in, and faithfully and openly to testify against them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Gould Fletcher, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and essayist, was a prolific correspondent who, during the course of his life, wrote hundreds of letters to such literary luminaries as Harriet Monroe, T. S. Eliot, Amy Lowell, Conrad Aiken, H. D., John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, and Donald Davidson. Because he was prominent in both the Imagist and Fugitive-Agrarian groups, Fletcher's letters offer a unique insight into the many crosscurrents and personalities that characterize the Modernist movement. Included here are also letters that shed light on the composition of Fletcher's own works, on his influential theories of poetry and poetics, and on the many conflicts and conjunctions that arose between Fletcher and his contemporaries in the course of a writing career that spanned nearly four decades. Leighton Rudolph's introduction to this astutely selected correspondence presents a valuable overview of Fletcher's life. With this volume, the entire John Gould Fletcher Series from the University of Arkansas Press is completed.

Book excerpt: A concern for the Robsons' position in the Wilbur-Gurney controversy who support Joseph John Gurney and that his deceptive powers of influence may delude honest minds. Asks how Gould likes the documents from Rhode Island and the attacks on their principles, and a fear that it may be seen as abandonment of the Quaker testimony against slavery. Wonders why ministers and elders can spread their objections among young people, but the latter may not say such things to ministers and elders. Will be traveling to New York and Philadelphia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Thomas J. Mumford: With Memorial Tributes The rare gifts of his nature had, in this relationship, free scope for personal expression. In the hearts of those whom he had thus helped and served, there are tender memories which this book could hardly supplement. But the far wider circle of those who knew him only as an editor had not an equal advantage. They could feel the pressure of mind and heart in every number of his bright and attractive paper; for Mr. Mumford in his sphere as editor had an unusual power of making himself felt without allowing himself to be seen. Yet there were few who, appreciating his editorial work, did not suspect that the man was more than the editor, and who did not really lose in their distance from him even more than they suspected. It is no disparagement to Mr. Mumford's success that he was known far more widely by his work than he was by his name. Few editors were so quotable as he. Many of his best paragraphs were reset and reprinted in other journals, which introduced him frequently to a large circle of readers who never knew the author, but who certainly felt his influence. Just how widely he was known and appreciated as an editor did not appear until his life was closed. Then the flood of notices from the religious press, representing all denominations and all sections of our country, revealed the depth and extent and nature of the impression which his editorial work had made.
