Book excerpt: Life of Don Quixote and Sancho is arguably Unamuno s most defining work, an audacious abridgment of the classic work from the seventeenth century. Finding that Miguel de Cervantes did not tell Don Quixote s story very well, Unamuno presents Cervantes s story the way he believes it should have been written, thereby weaving narration, commentary, and philosophy into a seamless whole. Unamuno here defines and exemplifies the courageous philosophy of Quixotism at length, revealing unexpected correspondences with existentialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life Of Don Quixote and SanchoA very personal essay on Don Quixote, the great work of Miguel de Cervantes, by one of the most quixotic intellectuals in Spanish culture. The philosopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno published this exemplary work on 'Don Quixote' coinciding with the third centenary of the publication of the first part of the famous novel (1605). It is an original statement in defense of Don Quixote's character and his mission as a chivalrous knight. As has been the case throughout his literary career, Unamuno used his writing as a pretext for -or a means to explore- the intellectual and philosophical issues that interested him. For this reason, Don Quixote is shown here under the philosophical lens of the prevailing existential schools of thought. Instead, its author Cervantes is treated in a very secondary way, and sometimes even with a certain antagonism.Unamuno not only narrates, but also exalts and even venerates the figure of the 'ingenious gentleman', whom he transforms into a kind of 'pseudo-God' or 'pseudo-Christ' figure in which to invest his copious religious faith.Miguel de Unamuno

Book excerpt: Unwilling to be bound by the categories of religion, Unamuno rejected the laws that distinguish one literary genre from another. Thus, some of Unamuno's finest essays are short stories, and vice versa. Included in this volume are four stories: Tia Tula; The Novel of Don Sandalio, Chess Player; The Madness of Doctor Montarco; Saint Manuel Bueno, Martyr and the play The Other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the social and contextual causes of suicide, the existential and philosophical reasons for committing suicide, and the prevention strategies that modern fictional literature places at our disposal. They go through the review of Modern fictional literature, in the American and European geographical framework, following the rationales that modern literature based on fiction can serve the purpose of understanding better the phenomenon of suicide, its most inaccessible impulses, and that has the potential to prevent suicide. From the turn of the 20th century to the present, debates over the meaning of suicide became a privileged site for efforts to discover the reasons why people commit suicide and how to prevent this behavior. Since the French sociologist and philosopher Émile Durkheim published his study Suicide: A Study in Sociology in 1897, a reframing of suicide took place, giving rise to a flourishing group of researchers and authors devoting their efforts to understand better the causes of suicide and to the formation of suicide prevention organizations. A century later, we still keep on trying to reach such an understanding of suicide, the nature, and nuances of its modern conceptualization, to prevent suicidal behaviors. The question of what suicide means in and for modernity is not an overcome one. Suicide is an act that touches all of our lives and engages with the incomprehensible and unsayable. Since the turn of the millennium, a fierce debate about the state’s role in assisted suicide has been adopted. Beyond the discussion as to whether physicians should assist in the suicide of patients with unbearable and hopeless suffering, the scope of the suicidal agency is much broader concerning general people wanting to die.
