Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental statistics is a rapidly growing discipline that is important not only as a division of professional and academic statistics, but also in the accumulation of data on environmental effects and in the formulation of environmental policy by government agencies. This book features contributions from policy makers, scientists actively involved in collection of data, and professional, academic and government statisticians. These explore the interfaces between the different areas of application of environmental statistics and consider the future applications of methods arising from this discipline. Some of the chapters deal specifically with environmental models and methods. Here, the contributors explain specialized statistical techniques that have been developed for analysing environmental data and mathematical models that have been applied to the problem of integrating large amounts of environmental data into a coherent picture of particular environmental systems. Several of the contributions deal specifically with the problems involved in co-ordinating data collection over large geographical areas and over many dimensions of measurement. Finally, the book discusses the problems of formulating specific environmental policies given the nature of the information that has been made available using environmental statistical methods.

Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

It is based on the structure and principles of A Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (Series M, No. 78). The report presents a menu of statistical variables that can be selected in the development of national and international programmes of environment statistics and indicators. A companion report, Concepts and Methods of Environment Statistics: Human Settlements - A Technical Report, published in 1988, deals with the environmental aspects of human settlements statistics.

Book excerpt: "The report, 'Make It Safe: Canada's Obligation to End the First Nations Water Crisis,' documents the impacts of serious and prolonged drinking water and sanitation problems for thousands of indigenous people--known as "First Nations"--living on reserves. It assesses why there are problems with safe water and sanitation on reserves, including a lack of binding water quality regulations, erratic and insufficient funding, faulty or sub-standard infrastructure, and degraded source waters. The federal government's own audits over two decades show a pattern of overpromising and underperforming on water and sanitation for reserves"--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, remedial action plans have been under way in 17 Ontario communities to improve the environmental status of places known as Areas of Concern (AOCs). This report has been prepared to provide data from which to quantitatively begin to look at the health status of communities within and around the Jackfish Bay AOC, comprising the township of Terrace Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. The report contains baseline information for the study area population for specific health outcomes selected on the basis that they might be linked to exposure to environmental contaminants. The report begins with a description of the study area & its population, and of the methods used in the study. This is followed by presentation of results of statistical comparisons of health data for study-area & Ontario populations with respect to mortality, morbidity as hospitalization cases, morbidity as cancer incidence, and birth outcomes. Examples are used to show how the statistics should be interpreted and issues regarding the interpretation of comparison results for the study area & Ontario populations are discussed (data issues, statistical issues, etiological factors). Appendices include brief descriptions of some possible causes for the selected health outcomes, mathematical formulas & calculations used in the study, statistical & data tables, and a glossary.

Book excerpt: Canada’s Top Climate Change Risks identifies the top risk areas based on the extent and likelihood of the potential damage, and rates the risk areas according to society’s ability to adapt and reduce negative outcomes. These 12 major areas of risk are: agriculture and food, coastal communities, ecosystems, fisheries, forestry, geopolitical dynamics, governance and capacity, human health and wellness, Indigenous ways of life, northern communities, physical infrastructure, and water. The report describes an approach to inform federal risk prioritization and adaptation responses. The Panel outlines a multi-layered method of prioritizing adaptation measures based on an understanding of the risk, adaptation potential, and federal roles and responsibilities.
