Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is divided into five sections. Section I deals with preparative methodology for isolation and purification of the components of the oxy radical experimental systems use most frequently, including all three forms of SOD and several other important scavengers. Section II provides the experimenter with a choice of a dozen oxy radical generating systems which can be used for testing of scavengers or for evaluation of the effects of oxy radicals on target tissues. The reader will note that in this section, as well as in most of the rest of the volume, the orientation is primarily biochemical, biologic, and medical, rather than pure chemistry or pure physics. Nevertheless, the techniques are widely applicable to a variety of disciplines.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the papers presented at the "Fourth International Congress on Oxygen Radicals (4-ICOR)," held June 27 - July 3, 1987, at the University of California, La Jolla. The chapters deal with the phenomena associated with highly reactive oxygen species (hydroxy, peroxy, alkoxy, aroxy, and superoxide radicals, as well as singlet oxygen) and their peroxidation products (hydrogen peroxide, hydroperoxides, peroxides, and epoxides) as they relate to the fields of chemistry, food technology, nutrition, biology, pharmacology, and medicine. The kinetics, energetics, and mechanistic aspects of the reactions of these species and the interrelationship of oxygen radicals (or any other free radicals) and peroxidized products have been emphasized. Special attention is focused on the mechanisms of the generation of free radicals and peroxy products in biosystems and on the adverse effects of these radicals and products in humans. The topics span the continuum from the simple chemistry of model systems to the complex considerations of clinical medicine. The book also explores the mechanisms of agents that protect against free radicals and peroxy products in vitro and in vivo. These agents include antioxidants used in materials, food antioxidants, physiological antioxidants, and antioxienzymes (SOD, glutathione peroxidase, and catalases). The use of these inhibitors to prevent damage to organs being prepared for transplantation, thereby maintaining the quality of transplanted organs and/or extending their "shelf-life," also is examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) rely on the efficient generation of reactive radical species and are increasingly attractive options for water remediation from a wide variety of organic micropollutants of human health and/or environmental concern. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment covers the key advanced oxidation processes developed for chemical contaminant destruction in polluted water sources, some of which have been implemented successfully at water treatment plants around the world. The book is structured in two sections; the first part is dedicated to the most relevant AOPs, whereas the topics covered in the second section include the photochemistry of chemical contaminants in the aquatic environment, advanced water treatment for water reuse, implementation of advanced treatment processes for drinking water production at a state-of-the art water treatment plant in Europe, advanced treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, and green technologies for water remediation. The advanced oxidation processes discussed in the book cover the following aspects: - Process principles including the most recent scientific findings and interpretation. - Classes of compounds suitable to AOP treatment and examples of reaction mechanisms. - Chemical and photochemical degradation kinetics and modelling. - Water quality impact on process performance and practical considerations on process parameter selection criteria. - Process limitations and byproduct formation and strategies to mitigate any potential adverse effects on the treated water quality. - AOP equipment design and economics considerations. - Research studies and outcomes. - Case studies relevant to process implementation to water treatment. - Commercial applications. - Future research needs. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment presents the most recent scientific and technological achievements in process understanding and implementation, and addresses to anyone interested in water remediation, including water industry professionals, consulting engineers, regulators, academics, students. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of general books on the subject of acid rain, or of symposium proceedings reviewing work ranging from atmospheric chemistry and deposition processes to freshwater acidification and effects on vegetation. In contrast, the collection of papers from this Workshop is focussed on a much smaller subject, the processes of acid deposition at high altitude sites. Interest in deposition at high elevation sites comes largely from observed vertical gradients in the degree of forest damage at sites in the Federal Republic of Germany and the eastern United States. These gradients show that damage to Norway spruce and fir increases with altitude at sites in Bavaria and the Black Forest, and that Red spruce are declining at high elevation sites in the Appalachian Mountains. With the large scale of scientific interest in forest decline, cany research groups, during the last five years, have been examining atmospheric chemistry, deposition processes, and effects on vegetation and soils at upland sites. In particular there have been many recent studies of cloud and precipitation chemistry, which show much larger concentrations of all ions in cloud water than in rain or snow. These studies have also shown that processes of wet and dry deposition and also the chemistry of the air at hill tops are modified strongly by orographic effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brown Boveri Scientific Symposia by now are part of a firmly established tradition. This is the tenth event in a series which was initiated shortly after Corporate Research was created as a separate entity in our company; the symposia are held every other year. The themes have been: 1969 Flow Research on Blading 1971 Real-Time Control of Electric Power Systems 1973 High-Temperature Materials in Gas Turbines 1975 Nonemissive Electrooptic Displays 1977 Current Interruption in High-Voltage Networks 1979 Surges in High-Voltage Networks 1981 Semiconductor Devices for Power Conditioning 1983 Corrosion in Power Generating Equipment 1985 Computer Systems for Process Control 1987 Process Technologies for Water Treatment The tenth event in an uninterrupted series that by now goes back almost 20 years is a good opportunity to make a few remarks on the guiding rules that have governed our symposia. Why have we chosen these titles? At the outset we establislwd certain selection criteria; we felt that a subject for a symposium should fulfill the following three requirements: It should characterize a part of an established discipline; in other words, it should describe an area of scholarly study and research. It should be of current interest in the sense that important results have recently been obtained and considerable research is still being undertaken in the world's scientific community. It should bear some relation to the scientific and technological activity of the company.

Book excerpt: An intuitively organized and incisive exploration of UV radiation and its modern applications In Photochemical Reactors: Theory, Methods, and Applications of Ultraviolet Radiation, distinguished civil engineer and researcher Dr. Ernest R. Blatchley III delivers a comprehensive exploration of the theory, methods, and contemporary and emerging applications of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The author describes the fundamentals of the history of photochemistry and photochemical reactions before moving on to consider the dynamic behavior of UV-based reactor systems and the physical concepts that govern natural and man-made sources of UV radiation. The book also covers the numerical and empirical methods used to evaluate photochemical kinetics, photobiological kinetics, and the dynamics of UV photoreactors. Common and emerging applications of UV radiation—like the disinfection of water, wastewater, air, and surfaces—are discussed, and UV-induced transformation processes are also explored. Readers will also find: Thorough introductions to methods and principles that are universal to UV processes, as well as comparisons between those processes Critical explorations of the physics of natural and artificial sources of ultraviolet radiation Practical discussions of modern applications of UV radiation, including the disinfection of water, air, wastewater, and surfaces, as well as the use of UV photoreactors to promote photolysis and photo-initiated, radical-mediated reactions Perfect for UV professionals, academics, and scientists, Photochemical Reactors: Theory, Methods, and Applications of Ultraviolet Radiation will also earn a place in the libraries of professionals working in companies that manufacture UV reactors, as well as engineering consultants with a professional interest in ultraviolet radiation.
