Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the pitiful images of famine victims generally emanate from the very poorest countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the entire region faces an intense economic crisis. Why is this area in a state of near-permanent crisis and perhaps more importantly, what can be done about it? In Economic Crisis in Africa the authors use country studies to examine how this situation has come about. The book is divided into four parts: Part I presents an overall perspective of the African Crisis and its management; Part II addresses the problems of the external sector; Part III discusses the crises and structural adjustment from a microperspective; and finally, Part IV examines changes in economic systems which took place during the 1980s. At a time when famine again threatens the area, this work offers a valuable insight into a highly complex and critical situation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of the Reference Guide to Africa explains the most important resources for the study of the continent of Africa. It contains a general sources section and a larger disciplinary oriented section. All sources are annotated. A new edition is sorely needed since the last edition was published nine years ago. The previous editions have been successfully used in research libraries worldwide since 1999, and it has been used to teach several African studies research courses. The book provides an orientation for researching almost any topic in the arts, humanities and social sciences concerning the continent of Africa, and all of its countries and ethnic groups. The first part explains and lists portals, databases, bibliographies, indexes, guides, encyclopedias, country sources, biography, primary sources, government publications, and statistics. The second part presents 16 subject-oriented chapters, mostly in the arts, humanities and social sciences, from agriculture and food security to women studies. It covers sources that broadly cover the continent, or in some cases only North Africa (and the Middle East). It generally excludes sources limited to one country or region of Africa, except for North Africa because of the nature of the literature. One-third of the sources in this edition are new, and nearly half of them are available in electronic format. There are author/title and subject indexes. This unique work is intended for students, teachers, librarians, and researchers. It likely will be used most by reference librarians and teachers for students in high school through graduate studies. It will also be used independently by undergraduate and graduate students. It can be used to answer simple reference questions, provide the resources for an undergraduate paper, or for comprehensive work by advanced students and researchers.

As in the other volumes of this set of public policy handbooks, the Handbook of Global Economic Policy employs a unique organizational principle: from viewing economic problems from conservative and liberal perspectives, to developing practical, non-ideological solutions to the problems, and finally testing the solution's feasibility in terms of economic, administrative, political, psychological, legal, international, and technological obstacles. The authors confront conventional wisdom about tradeoffs between unemployment and inflation, economic growth and displaced workers, and c

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Continent, Our Future presents the emerging African perspective on this complex issue. The authors use as background their own extensive experience and a collection of 30 individual studies, 25 of which were from African economists, to summarize this African perspective and articulate a path for the future. They underscore the need to be sensitive to each country's unique history and current condition. They argue for a broader policy agenda and for a much more active role for the state within what is largely a market economy. Finally, they stress that Africa must, and can, compete in an increasingly globalized world and, perhaps most importantly, that Africans must assume the leading role in defining the continent's development agenda.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A panoramic view of military transition in Nigeria since 1970 by a collection of intellectuals, mainly professors at the University of Lagos, who in one way or another participated in or observed this period of Nigerian politics. Their clear objective is to say never again to military rule, and to anticipate and deflect any possible defence of this kind of regime. The essays contend that what the military call transition to civil rule was rather a phase in which transition programmes were permanently recycled; a dimension of power struggle; and that the military consistently desisted deferring political power to civilians. Additionally they show how military stranglehold has divided a country it claimed to unite, and mindlessly wrecked an economy through expropriation, collusion and pillage. They further demonstrate that the nation was in a more disintegrated and divided state in 1999 than 1996, the federal structure having been deformed in the aftermath of transitions, and the citizens having lost any residual confidence in their country as a nation.

Book excerpt: Africa's societies and their economies are in crisis with mounting external debts and falling incomes leading to collapsing infrastructure, more widespread disease, illiteracy, malnourishment adn social conflict. The text argues that the problenms are not insuperable, but that whereas their causes are largely external, the only long-term solutions rest in African hands. The author shows that the adjustment programmes imposed by the World Bank and the IMF on many African countries have compounded the disastrous impact that foreign debt, trade restrictions and falling export prices have had. With the threats of proposed changes in the structure of world trade, they ammount to the virtual recolonization of much of the continent and offer its people little hope. To the contrary real development will only be achieved through long-term strategies appropriate to African circumstances, which return control of its abundant resources to Africans themselves and which ensure greater democracy and accountability in African political structures. The author is a member of the Economic Commission for Africa and Chair of the Institute for African Affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic reform was the most pressing question for African and other Third World countries during the 1980s. In this first full-length examination of the political economy of adjustment in Ghana, Jeffrey Herbst describes the causes of Ghana's dramatic economic decline and reviews the politics of reform that began in 1983. Since Ghana was one of the first African countries to adopt a comprehensive reform program and the one that has sustained adjustment longest, the Ghanaian experience has profound ramifications for debates regarding stabilization and structural change across the continent. Herbst devotes special attention to the interaction between the type of government and the politics of adjustment, the reaction of interest groups such as urban labor and the peasantry, and the relationship between economic and political change. His extended field research and sophisticated knowledge of the issues involved, both from the economic and political science literature, make this study of importance not only to Africanists, political scientists, economists, and sociologists, but also to government and financial leaders wrestling with economic reform in developing countries. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Association of African Universities and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa jointly sponsored this study in two volumes. The diagnoses and proposals emanate from a distinctively African perspective, and the work aims to fill a gap in the literature available on Africa's own views and analysis on unfolding issues concerning the continent's development. Volume two focuses on the strategies and policies of African development e.g. food self-sufficiency, the challenges of collective self-reliant development, regional economic cooperation and integration, rural transformation in Africa and agricultural development.
