Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned mathematician who considers himself both applied and theoretical in his approach, Peter Lax has spent most of his professional career at NYU, making significant contributions to both mathematics and computing. He has written several important published works and has received numerous honors including the National Medal of Science, the Lester R. Ford Award, the Chauvenet Prize, the Semmelweis Medal, the Wiener Prize, and the Wolf Prize. Several students he has mentored have become leaders in their fields. Two volumes span the years from 1952 up until 1999, and cover many varying topics, from functional analysis, partial differential equations, and numerical methods to conservation laws, integrable systems and scattering theory. After each paper, or collection of papers, is a commentary placing the paper in context and where relevant discussing more recent developments. Many of the papers in these volumes have become classics and should be read by any serious student of these topics. In terms of insight, depth, and breadth, Lax has few equals. The reader of this selecta will quickly appreciate his brilliance as well as his masterful touch. Having this collection of papers in one place allows one to follow the evolution of his ideas and mathematical interests and to appreciate how many of these papers initiated topics that developed lives of their own.

Book excerpt: This is a scientific and philosophical autobiography written around a collection of Denis Noble's most significant papers. It traces a remarkable journey from na ve reductionism to a rigorous systems approach to living systems. It is rigorous because Denis Noble was one of the first biologists to construct computer models of cells and organs of the body. His theoretical work is entirely mathematically based, with no room for ambiguity. Far from the denigration of the systems approach as holistic 'hand-waving', his work is now regarded by pharmaceutical companies and regulators as the gold standard of modelling in the development of new medication. Systems Biology is an idea in search of a definition. This book explains why this is true: it is an approach rather than a subject. Denis Noble's work is one of the clearest examples of the systems approach in practice since it reveals the nature of some of the forms of downward causation in multilevel analysis. The story will delight readers who like to see how scientific controversy is resolved, since many of the developments described in each chapter were highly controversial when they occurred.

They cover Wicksell’s views on Economics and monetary theory, his theory of production and distribution, some review articles on the works of Pareto, Böhm-Bawerk, Carl Menger and Bowley and some papers on foreign trade problems, written after the First World War. Erik Lindahl’s introductory essay gives a picture of Wicksell the social reformer, who radical opinions often brought him into conflict with the authorities and the general public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneering research of Hirotugu Akaike has an international reputation for profoundly affecting how data and time series are analyzed and modelled and is highly regarded by the statistical and technological communities of Japan and the world. His 1974 paper "A new look at the statistical model identification" (IEEE Trans Automatic Control, AC-19, 716-723) is one of the most frequently cited papers in the area of engineering, technology, and applied sciences (according to a 1981 Citation Classic of the Institute of Scientific Information). It introduced the broad scientific community to model identification using the methods of Akaike's criterion AIC. The AIC method is cited and applied in almost every area of physical and social science. The best way to learn about the seminal ideas of pioneering researchers is to read their original papers. This book reprints 29 papers of Akaike's more than 140 papers. This book of papers by Akaike is a tribute to his outstanding career and a service to provide students and researchers with access to Akaike's innovative and influential ideas and applications. To provide a commentary on the career of Akaike, the motivations of his ideas, and his many remarkable honors and prizes, this book reprints "A Conversation with Hirotugu Akaike" by David F. Findley and Emanuel Parzen, published in 1995 in the journal Statistical Science. This survey of Akaike's career provides each of us with a role model for how to have an impact on society by stimulating applied researchers to implement new statistical methods.

A complete list of his published papers, in order of publication, appears in the Bibliography of T.D. Lee. The papers have been arranged into ten categories, in most cases according to the subject matter. At the beginning of each of the first eight categories of papers, there is a commentary on the content and significance of all of the papers in the category. The two short final categories do not have any commentaries. The editor would like to thank Dr. Richard Friedberg for his assistance in the early stages of the editorial work on this project, as well as for writing commentaries on the papers of Categories III and IV. I would also like to thank Dr. Norman Christ for writing the commentary on the papers of Category VII. The assistance of Irene Tramm was in valuable in many aspects of preparing this collection, including locating copies of Lee's papers. GERALD FEINBERG List of Categories of T.D. Book excerpt: The central and distinguishing feature shared by all the contributions made by K. Ito is the extraordinary insight which they convey. Reading his papers, one should try to picture the intellectual setting in which he was working. At the time when he was a student in Tokyo during the late 1930s, probability theory had only recently entered the age of continuous-time stochastic processes: N. Wiener had accomplished his amazing construction little more than a decade earlier (Wiener, N. , "Differential space," J. Math. Phys. 2, (1923)), Levy had hardly begun the mysterious web he was to eventually weave out of Wiener's P~!hs, the generalizations started by Kolmogorov (Kol mogorov, A. N. , "Uber die analytische Methoden in der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung," Math Ann. 104 (1931)) and continued by Feller (Feller, W. , "Zur Theorie der stochastischen Prozesse," Math Ann. 113, (1936)) appeared to have little if anything to do with probability theory, and the technical measure-theoretic tours de force of J. L. Doob (Doob, J. L. , "Stochastic processes depending on a continuous parameter, " TAMS 42 (1937)) still appeared impregnable to all but the most erudite. Thus, even at the established mathematical centers in Russia, Western Europe, and America, the theory of stochastic processes was still in its infancy and the student who was asked to learn the subject had better be one who was ready to test his mettle.

These articles explore a range of topics such as the historical evolution of the periodic system as well as its philosophical status and its relationship to modern quantum physics. In this present volume, many of the more in-depth research papers, which formed the basis for this publication, are presented in their entirety; they have also been published in highly accessible science magazines (such as American Scientist), and journals in history and philosophy of science, as well as quantum chemistry. This must-have publication is completely unique as there is nothing of this form currently available on the market.
