Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial ecosystems involve a complex synergy of factors, including social and structural changes that are frequently cumulative within territories, promoting the improvement of citizens’ quality of life and higher development levels. Further, dynamic territories are characterized by constant change, activity and progress. Each chapter in this volume examines a specific entrepreneurial ecosystem in an effort to describe why and how certain companies and organizations manage to overcome adversities and achieve strong performance, while others fail. Unlike the conventional focus, the volume examines microenterprises and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), while also discussing selected experiences and case studies from developed and developing countries alike.

Book excerpt: In this case study book we present authentic case studies of selected mid-sized companies from Europe with market leading positions in a transformational context for management. Alle case studies have been elaborated on the basis of the integrated case method (ICM) in intense cooperation with the companies and the respective top management. This novel approach to case research and teaching has been developed throughout the EU funded ERASMUS+ project ECASA (European CAse Study Alliance). Case study learning and teaching offers students and lecturers a great opportunity for class discussions on prevailing topics. Case studies can be used for individual and group work. The structure of the cases allows lecturers to use it in different contexts regarding exercises and educational objectives. Case teaching provides an interactive and challenging environment, involving diverse perspectives and complex interdependencies that trigger thoughts and discussions about practical business challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a new cross-country database on the importance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This database is unique in that it presents consistent and comparable information on the contribution of the SME sector to total employment and GDP across different countries. The dataset improves on existing publicly available datasets on several grounds. First, it extends coverage to a broader set of developing and industrial economies. Second, it provides information on the contribution of the SME sector using a uniform definition of SMEs across different countries, allowing for consistent cross-country comparisons. Third, while we follow the traditional definition of the SME sector as being part of the formal sector, the new database also includes the size of the SME sector relative to the informal sector. This paper describes the sources and the construction of the different indicators, presents descriptive statistics, and explores correlations with other socioeconomic variables. This paper--a product of Finance, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to study SME-related issues.

These enterprises contribute to economy by providing employment to large number of people and also significantly to growth and GDP of an economy. Knowledge has become important factor of success and has replaced old factors like labor and capital. In order to survive in the globalized market, small and medium enterprises use knowledge to innovate. But there are some small and medium enterprises in India that remain non-innovative. Non-innovative small and medium enterprises are not able to recognize business environmental factors. As a result of which they fail to survive and eventually perish. The research study explores few innovative small and medium enterprises from the selected sector i.e. information technology and pharmaceutical sector. The present study presents few case studies of small and medium enterprises in information technology and pharmaceutical sector in India. These case studies look at the background information, management of innovation, factors that influence innovation, resources of innovation that affect implementation of innovative practices in SMEs. Some enterprises are start-ups which have been started by first time entrepreneurs but some are decade old companies which have grown with time. The factors that influenced the innovation are opportunities, new business proposition, high cost of existing product, aim to have more market share or to be the market leader or to provide affordable medicine to everybody. The management of innovation differed in the different sectors owing to different nature of the sectors.

This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is an analysis of the business models developed or adopted by Chinese small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), specifically those that are successfully listed on China’s capital market; in other words, it is a dissection of those Chinese business models that have “worked.” In China, there are over 10 million companies that are registered with China’s State Industrial and Commercial Administration and over 40 million unregistered businesses. Among them, only about 1,000 companies became successfully listed on China’s capital market and were able to obtain public funds from equity investors. This book takes a look at who these “lucky ones” were and what business models led to their success in a highly competitive Chinese market, investigations that will certainly be of interest to both Chinese and international readerships. In addition, this book provides a nuanced and micro view of the Chinese economy. As China’s economy increasingly receives attention worldwide, the amount of research and publications on China’s economy is also growing exponentially. However, the majority of these studies only focus on the macro level of the Chinese economy and aggregate variables such as GDP, growth rate, inflation, etc., while little research has been done at a micro and company level to analyze the Chinese economy. Thus, this book’s focus on the case studies of representative firms may help fill some gaps in the study of business and the economy in China. Furthermore, this book hopes to dispel certain misconceptions about the nature of the Chinese economy. There is currently a stereotypical view about Chinese economy, for example that China, as the workshop of the world, primarily produces low-end products with low prices to be sold in other countries by budget retailers like Wal-Mart or dollar stores. While that is true to some extent, it is certainly not the whole story. The companies analyzed in this book cover a wide spectrum of industries including modern agriculture, alternative energy, resources recycling, mobile games, animation, luxury products, supply chain management, filmmaking and TV series production, displaying to readers the brand-new industrial structure of Chinese companies in the 21st century.
