Book excerpt: The First Annual Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) was convened in Albuquerque in 1971. It was attended by a small group of primarily practicing clinicians dedicated to meeting the human service needs of their clients, while recognizing the importance of contributing to the collective knowledge base of their discipline by providing empirical evidence supporting the links between their clinical interventions and outcomes. Thirteen years later Barlow, Hays, and Nelson (1984) would describe, in their now seminal publication The Scientist Practitioner, an integrated model of applied behavioral research, its strategies and methods, and the role of the practitioner in the acquisition of knowledge directed toward improving clinical procedures and outcomes. By this time, 13 Volumes of CAC publications had already been published and comprised the single largest source of applied clinical data addressing the nature of aphasia and its clinical management. These documents represented the product of the scientist-practitioner model in action prior to its formalization by Barlow et al., and provide a rich source of evidence supporting the efficacy of aphasia rehabilitation. Unfortunately, these and subsequent CAC publications remain unavailable to the larger clinical and scientific community due to their limited distribution. Much has changed in the ensuing years. Indeed, many of the healthcare delivery systems in which aphasia rehabilitation is now practiced in 2002 severely restrict the frequency and duration of clinical services. Increasingly, practitioners are required to be more accountable for their clinical outcomes, and to measure behavioral change in units that represent meaningful differences to consumers. Now more than ever, it is critical that the scientist-practitioner model be promoted in order to better serve individuals with aphasia, and to further advance the collective knowledge and evidence base of the discipline. Now more than ever, the available evidence needs to be disseminated as broadly as possible. These goals are in keeping with the mission of CAC as envisioned by its founding members and remain the focused commitment of its many participants, steering committee and publication board. In keeping with these goals, the papers that appear in this special edition of Aphasiology were selected based upon their theoretical importance, clinical relevance, and scientific merit, from among the many platform and poster presentations comprising the 31st Annual Clinical Aphasiology Conference held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2001. Each paper was peer-reviewed by the Editorial Consultants and Associate Editors acknowledged herein consistent with the standards of Aphasiology and the rigours of merit review that represent this indexed, archival journal that is accessible to clinicians and scientists all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language, vision and music: what common cognitive patterns underlie our competence in these disparate modes of thought? Language (natural & formal), vision and music seem to share at least the following attributes: a hierarchical organisation of constituents, recursivity, metaphor, the possibility of self-reference, ambiguity, and systematicity. Can we propose the existence of a general symbol system with instantiations in these three modes or is the only commonality to be found at the level of such entities as cerebral columnar automata? Answers are to be found in this international collection of work which recognises that one of the basic features of consciousness is its MultiModality, that there are possibilities to model this with contemporary technology, and that cross-cultural commonalities in the experience of, and creativity within, the various modalities are significant. With the advent of Intelligent MultiMedia this aspect of consciousness implementation in mind/brain acquires new significance. (Series B)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do many people with disorders of communication experience a sense of demoralization? Do these subjective experiences have any bearing on how such problems should be treated? How can professionals dealing with speech, language, hearing and other communication disorders analyse and respond to the subjective and relational needs of clients with such problems? In this book, authors in the fields of communication disorders analyse the psychological, social and linguistic processes and interactions that underpin clinical practice, from both client and clinician perspectives. The chapters demonstrate how it is possible to analyze and understand client-clinician discourse using qualitative research, and describe various challenges to establishing relationships such as cultural, gender and age differences. The authors go on to describe self-care processes, the therapeutic use of the self, and various psychological factors that could be important for developing therapeutic relationships. Also covered are the rarely considered topics of spirituality and transpersonal issues, which may at times be relevant to clinicians working with clients who have debilitating, degenerative and terminal illnesses associated with certain communication disorders. While this book is geared toward the needs of practicing and training speech, language and hearing clinicians, other professional such as teachers of the deaf, psychotherapists, nurses, and occupational therapists will find the ideas relevant, interesting and easily translatable for use in their own clinical practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one in a series of monographs being issued under the general title of "Disorders of Human Communication". Each monograph deals in detail with a particular aspect of vocal communication and its disorders, and is written by internationally distinguished experts. Therefore, the series will provide an authoritative source of up-to-date scientific and clinical informa tion relating to the whole field of normal and abnormal speech communication, and as such will succeed the earlier monumental work "Handbuch der Stimm und Sprachheilkunde" by R. Luchsinger and G. E. Arnold (last issued in 1970). This series will prove invaluable for clinicians, teachers and research workers in phoniatrics and logopaedics, phonetics and linguistics, speech pathology, otolaryngology, neurology and neurosurgery, psychology and psychiatry, paediatrics and audiology. Several of the monographs will also be useful to voice and singing teachers, and to their pupils. G. E. Arnold, Jackson, Miss. F. Winckel, Berlin B. D. Wyke, London Preface Neurologists, neuropsychologists, speech pathologists and other clinicians who care for dysphasic patients have often complained that available books on dysphasia tend to be parochially theoretical, and insufficiently directed towards clinical reality. These books provide the categories, labels, and theoretical speculations of one school or another; but dysphasic patients as often as not do not fit neatly into a specific theoretical category. Clinical patterns of dysphasic syndromes of most patients with dysphasia rarely conform fully to the pictures painted in the textbooks.
