Book Synopsis Seizing the Word by : Keith E. Byerman
Download or read book Seizing the Word written by Keith E. Byerman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seizing the Word offers a comprehensive reading of the work of W. E. B. Du Bois (1868–1963), a pivotal figure in the intellectual life of nineteenth- and twentieth-century America. As a historian, journalist, novelist, poet, and social and literary critic, this extraordinary man profoundly influenced our understanding of the African American experience. Following his initial discussion of Du Bois's earliest writing, Keith E. Byerman posits The Souls of Black Folk (1903) as a master text that established the tropes of doubleconsciousness and the veil for which Du Bois is known, and incorporated the various genres through which he voiced his understanding of the world. The remainder of the study discusses Du Bois's works as elaborations of the master text within and against the contemporary discourses on history, art, and self. Throughout Byerman examines the connections between the personal and intellectual aspects of Du Bois's life to reveal the intense engagement with moral and ideological issues found even in texts that Du Bois represented as “objective.” At the same time, in order to present some of the complexity and conflict that runs through Du Bois's work, Byerman identifies the tensions and patterns in Du Bois's writing that cross disciplines or genres. Instead of focusing on one aspect of Du Bois's career, Seizing the Word attempts a more synthetic approach, primarily by examining Du Bois in terms of contemporary literary and cultural theory, most notably Lacan's Law of the Father and Erikson's work on identity.

Book Synopsis Seize the Moment-Besher't by : Abraham N. Fenster, Ph.D.
Download or read book Seize the Moment-Besher't written by Abraham N. Fenster, Ph.D. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seizing the moment at the attosecond of time is-"when it is meant to be." The author relates to how scientific theories can be integrated into an overarching explanation of how the macro workings of the infinite universe are intertwined with the micro activities of an individual’s activities in the physical world; and how this can be blended with the unseen world of spirituality of the universe, as coexisting parallel intertwined worlds. Science and spirituality are not in opposition to one another but complement each other and provide a more revealing explanation to our fundamental questions of “is it meant to be?” or “is it meant to be,”- Besher’t. In the process of trying to determine the complex concepts implied by “meant to be”, the author explores how one can have a predetermined existence and make “free will” decisions at the same time. Detailing some of the author’s own Besher’t life experiences, he ultimately concludes that one must recognize the spirituality teachings of Kabbalah and current scientific hypothesis of the Unified Theory to understand this complex question of how does free will have a role in predetermination.

Book Synopsis Seized by Truth by : Prof. Joel B. Green
Download or read book Seized by Truth written by Prof. Joel B. Green and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We read the Bible and interpret Scripture in order to live in grace-filled relation to God's divine purpose. When we approach the Bible as Scripture author, Joel Green, takes seriously the faith statement that the Bible is our Book; these scriptures are our Scripture. We are not reading someone else's mail--as though reading the Bible had to do foremost with recovering an ancient meaning intended for someone else and then translating its principles for use in our own lives. When we recall that we are the people of God to whom the Bible is addressed as Scripture, we realize that the fundamental transformation is not the transformation of an ancient message into a contemporary meaning, bur rather the transformation of our lives by means of God's Word. This means that reading the Bible as Scripture has less to do with what tools we bring to the task, however important these may be, and more to do with our own dispositions as we come to our engagement with Scripture. We come not so much to retrieve facts or to gain information, but to be formed and ultimately, transformed. Scripture does not present us with texts to be mastered but with a Word, God's Word, intent on mastering us, on shaping our lives.
