Book excerpt: The Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Francisco area on October 17, 1989, causing 63 deaths and $10 billion worth of damage. This book reviews existing research on the Loma Prieta quake and draws from it practical lessons that could be applied to other earthquake-prone areas of the country. The volume contains seven keynote papers presented at a symposium on the earthquake and includes an overview written by the committee offering recommendations to improve seismic safety and earthquake awareness in parts of the country susceptible to earthquakes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries people living on volcanoes have known that the outset of seismic activity is often a forerunner of a volcanic eruption. This understand ing allowed people living close to the sites of the Mt. Nuovo 1538 eruption at Campi Flegrei, Italy, and of the Mt. Usu 1663 eruption, in Hokkaido, Japan (to quote only two examples) to flee before the eruptions started. During the second half of the 19th century seismographs were installed on some volcanoes, and the link between seismic and eruptive activity started to be assessed on a firmer scientific basis. The first systematic observations of the correlations existing between seismic activity and volcanic eruptions were probably those carried out at Mt. Vesuvius by Luigi Palmieri in 1856. Palmieri was the Director of Osservatorio Vesuviano and built an electromagnetic seismograph with the aim of "making visible the smallest ground motions by recording them on paper and indicating direction, intensity and duration". He was able to show the relationship between earthquakes and the different phases of volcanic activity. He identified the harmonic tremor which he indicated was a precursor of volcanic activity: "the characteristic feature of the ground mo tions preceding eruption is its continuity . . . (before the eruption of 1861) the electromagnetic seismograph began to show a continuous tremor". The Palmieri seismograph was also utilized in Japan until 1883, when it was replaced by the new Gray-Milne seismographs, and, later, by the Omori in struments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Geology and Basin Analysis: Case Studies on Sedimentary Basins in China introduces the principles, approaches and techniques needed to solve problems using seismic data calibrated with well log, cores and outcrop profiles. The book emphasizes the adoption of seismic techniques into basin analysis and broadens the usage of seismic data in geological research which may be referred to as "seismic geology. The principle of the book is mainly summarized from a series of case studies in different basins in China. In addition, through this book readers can understand the primary characteristics and basin fill evolution of major petroleum basins around the world. When starting research on a basin, researchers and professionals are confronted with how to reveal the general architecture of basin fills and depict three-dimensional geometry, and the internal architecture of subsurface depositional bodies and their arrangement, hence this book is a great tome on necessary areas of exploration. - Examines the adoption of seismic techniques into basin analysis and broadens the usage of seismic data in geological research - Includes seismic, well log, core and outcrop data, as well as high resolution 3D seismic profiles and slices - Features case studies to further illustrate principles and approaches described in the book, which can be applied to similar basins around the world

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special issue contains contributions presented at the international workshop Seismic waves in laterally inhomogeneous media IV, which was held at the Castle of Trest, Czech Republic, May 22-27, 1995. The workshop, which was attended by about 100 seismologists from more than 10 countries, was devoted mainly to the current state of theoretical and computational means of study of seismic wave propagation in complex structures. The special issue can be of interest for theoretical, global and explorational seismologists. The first part contains papers dealing with the study and the use of various methods of solving forward and inverse problems in complicated structures. Among other methods, discrete-wave number method, the finite-difference method, the edge-wave supperposition method and the ray method are studied and used. Most papers contained in the second part are related to the ray method. The most important topics are two-point ray tracing, grid calculations of travel times and amplitudes and seismic wave propagation in anisotropic media.

Available now in one volume, this textbook provides a complete and systematic discussion of exploration seismology. The first part of the book looks at the history of exploration seismology and the theory - developed from the first principles of physics. All aspects of seismic acquisition are then described. The second part of the book goes on to discuss data-processing and interpretation. Applications of seismic exploration to groundwater, environmental and reservoir geophysics are also included. The book is designed to give a comprehensive up-to-date picture of the applications of seismology. Exploration Seismology's comprehensiveness makes it suitable as a text for undergraduate courses for geologists, geophysicists and engineers, as well as a guide and reference work for practising professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference manual is designed to enable more geophysicists to appreciate static corrections, especially their limitations, their relationship with near-surface geology, and their impact on the quality of final interpreted sections. The book is addressed to those involved in data acquisition (datum static corrections), data processing (datum static and residual static corrections), and interpretation (the impact that unresolved static corrections, especially the long-wavelength or low-spatial-frequency component, have on the interpretation of the final section). Simple explanations of the underlying principles are included in an attempt to remove some of the mystique of static corrections. The principles involved are illustrated with simple models; these are supplemented with many data examples. This book details differences in approaches that must be considered among 2D, 3D, and crooked-line recordings as well as between P-wave and S-wave surveys. Static corrections are shown to be a simplified yet practical approach to modeling the effects of the near surface where a more correct wavefield or raypath-modeled method may not be efficiently undertaken. Chapters cover near-surface topography and geology; computation of datum static corrections; uphole surveys; refraction surveys; static corrections-limitations and effect on seismic data processes; residual static corrections; and interpretation aspects. An extensive index and a large list of references are included.
