Book excerpt: In the 1994 M[subscript w] 6.7 Northridge and 1995 M[subscript w] 6.9 Kobe earthquakes, steel moment-frame buildings were exposed to an unexpected flaw. The commonly utilized welded unreinforced flange, bolted web connections were observed to experience brittle fractures in a number of buildings, even at low levels of seismic demand. A majority of these buildings have not been retrofitted and may be susceptible to structural collapse in a major earthquake. This dissertation presents a case study of retrofitting a 20-story pre-Northridge steel moment-frame building. Twelve retrofit schemes are developed that present some range in degree of intervention. Three retrofitting techniques are considered: upgrading the brittle beam-to-column moment resisting connections, and implementing either conventional or buckling-restrained brace elements within the existing moment-frame bays. The retrofit schemes include some that are designed to the basic safety objective of ASCE-41 Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings. Detailed finite element models of the base line building and the retrofit schemes are constructed. The models include considerations of brittle beam-to-column moment resisting connection fractures, column splice fractures, column baseplate fractures, accidental contributions from "simple"' non-moment resisting beam-to-column connections to the lateral force-resisting system, and composite actions of beams with the overlying floor system. In addition, foundation interaction is included through nonlinear translational springs underneath basement columns. To investigate the effectiveness of the retrofit schemes, the building models are analyzed under ground motions from three large magnitude simulated earthquakes that cause intense shaking in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, and under recorded ground motions from actual earthquakes. It is found that retrofit schemes that convert the existing moment-frames into braced-frames by implementing either conventional or buckling-restrained braces are effective in limiting structural damage and mitigating structural collapse. In the three simulated earthquakes, a 20% chance of simulated collapse is realized at PGV of around 0.6 m/s for the base line model, but at PGV of around 1.8 m/s for some of the retrofit schemes. However, conventional braces are observed to deteriorate rapidly. Hence, if a braced-frame that employs conventional braces survives a large earthquake, it is questionable how much service the braces provide in potential aftershocks.

Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete buildings built prior to the enactment of modern seismic provisions are vulnerable when subjected to high-magnitude earthquakes since they lack the capacity to properly dissipate the energy associated with the ground excitation. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the benefits of Buckling-Restrained Braces (BRBs) as a retrofit technique for accommodating seismic demands in seismically deficient reinforced concrete frames, the dominant structural system of pre-1970s construction. The efficiency of Superelastic-Shape Memory Alloys (SE-SMA) as the core material of the BRB is also evaluated. Improvements in lateral strength capacity and residual displacements of the SMA-BRB retrofitted frames are assessed against a previously tested bare concrete frame and frames retrofitted with BRBs incorporating stainless steel and chrome-molybdenum steel core bars. Reverse cyclic finite-element modelling of the frames was conducted with VecTor2, and the numerical models were validated through experimental results present in the literature. The validated numerical models were further modified to address deficiencies in the original BRB design by including improvements in restraining of the buckling. The SMA-BRB provided lateral strength comparable to the modified steel BRB models with enhancements in ductility capacity. Notably, the SMA-BRB system did not accumulate additional residual displacements beyond those experienced by the bare frame alone. Therefore, the reduction in residual displacements, in comparison to conventional steel core BRB materials, illustrates one of the main benefits of SMA bars, leading to a viable and efficient alternative to increase the seismic performance and reduce damage in structural elements located in high seismic zones. Furthermore, nonlinear time-history analyses are conducted. Earthquake records that simulate design earthquakes for the cities of Montreal and Vancouver were selected for the dynamic loading. At the end of the thesis, an optimized BRB design is provided in which the full capacity of the core bars is achieved since localized buckling is minimized.

Moreover, in the light of our current knowledge and of modern codes, the majority of buildings stock and other types of structures in many parts of the world are substandard and deficient. This is especially so in earthquake-prone regions, as, even there, seismic design of structures is relatively recent. In those regions the major part of the seismic threat to human life and property comes from old buildings. Due to the infrastructure's increasing decay, frequently combined with the need for structural upgrading to meet more stringent design requirements (especially against seismic loads), structural retrofitting is becoming more and more important and receives today considerable emphasis throughout the world. In response to this need, a major part of the fib Model Code 2005, currently under development, is being devoted to structural conservation and maintenance. More importantly, in recognition of the importance of the seismic threat arising from existing substandard buildings, the first standards for structural upgrading to be promoted by the international engineering community and by regulatory authorities alike are for seismic rehabilitation of buildings. This is the case, for example, of Part 3: Strengthening and Repair of Buildings of Eurocode 8 (i. e. of the draft European Standard for earthquake-resistant design), and which is the only one among the current (2003) set of 58 Eurocodes attempting to address the problem of structural upgrading. It is also the case of the recent (2001) ASCE draft standard on Seismic evaluation of existing buildings and of the 1996 Law for promotion of seismic strengthening of existing reinforced concrete structures in Japan. As noted in Chapter 1 of this Bulletin, fib - as CEB and FIP did before - has placed considerable emphasis on assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures. The present Bulletin is a culmination of this effort in the special but very important field of seismic assessment and rehabilitation. It has been elaborated over a period of 4 years by Task Group 7.1 Assessment and retrofit of existing structures of fib Commission 7 Seismic design, a truly international team of experts, representing the expertise and experience of all the important seismic regions of the world. In the course of its work the team had six plenary two-day meetings: in January 1999 in Pavia, Italy; in August 1999 in Raleigh, North Carolina; in February 2000 in Queenstown, New Zealand; in July 2000 in Patras, Greece; in March 2001 in Lausanne, Switzerland; and in August 2001 in Seattle, Washington. In October 2002 the final draft of the Bulletin was presented to public during the 1st fib Congress in Osaka. It was also there that it was approved by fib Commission 7 Seismic Design. Traditional lateral force resisting systems such as the moment resisting frame and the concentrically braced frame are both conventional structural schemes that have been implemented for many years, but result in only mediocre performance levels. The lacking stiffness of a moment resisting frame as well as the limited ductility of a concentrically braced frame gave impetus for engineers to direct significant research efforts into the development of new lateral resisting systems that embody a more stable hysteretic behavior, adequate ductility, control of damage, and energy dissipating capacity. Fortunately, several recent developments have allowed engineers to move one step closer to designing more efficient earthquake-resistant structures. "High-performance braces," as this thesis calls them, are new and improved bracing systems that combine the economy and stiffness of a concentrically braced frame with the ductility and energy dissipating capacity of a moment resisting frame. This thesis analyzes and evaluates three different types of high-performance braces: (i) the buckling-restrained brace frame, (ii) the self-centering energy dissipating brace frame, and (iii) the hybrid brace frame, with regards to their structural performance and economy. The primary goal of the thesis is to provide useful insights into the current developments of high-performance braces for practicing engineers in the hope that such systems can be more widely adopted and utilized in the contemporary design of earthquake-resistant structures.
