In strong earthquake events, multi-storey concentrically braced steel frames (CBFs) are prone to form a storey-collapse mechanism after buckling and yielding of the braces in a storey. This thesis evaluates the seismic performance of steel concentrically braced frames (CBFs) in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The aim of this study is to assess the overall lateral capacity of multi-storey buildings and the associated sequence of formation of plastic hinges using inelastic pushover analysis technique. The time history analysis approach is employed to assess the local and global seismic performance of braced frame structures under various earthquake records representing the potential seismic loading scenarios. In addition, the adequacy of using inelastic pushover analysis as a simplified means to examine the seismic integrity of braced frame structures and to predict the sequence of development of plastic hinges within the system is evaluated. This study shows that under the expected level of Abu Dhabi's seismicity the designed concentrically braced steel frames (CBFs) perform in an excellent manner by suffering of repairable damages with no life safety threatening. This study puts a step forward in the effort of spreading the knowledge of using the concentrically braced steel frames as lateral force resisting system in Abu Dhabi for mid and high rise buildings.

Despite extensive deployment and continued service of these systems, little research has focused on the seismic performance and rehabilitation of older braced frames, termed non-seismic concentrically braced frames (NCBFs). Such frames were designed prior to the advent of capacity design standards and lack details and brace section geometry that promote ductility and sustain resistance, such as adequate gusset plate rotational clearance, minimum weld toughness, and brace compactness limits. Beams in NCBFs with braces in chevron configurations (V and inverted V) are commonly unable to develop the design brace unbalanced load specified in the 2010 AISC Seismic Provisions that arises after brace buckling. NCBFs with these weak beams are the primary subject of this research program. Two-story experimental specimens with braces in the inverted V configuration were tested at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan to examine the seismic response of a prototypical existing NCBF and three rehabilitation schemes. The results show that poor brace compactness and connection details can be highly detrimental to system performance, but weak beam braced frames with ductile details can achieve good ductility while maintaining strength. Numerical models of the specimens, developed in Abaqus, simulate the observed response well and provide a validated basis for future analyses.

Seismic evaluation of steel concentrically braced frame (CBF) buildings has revealed that they exhibit soft-story behavior due to non-uniform brace degradation and non-ductile failure modes. This research proposes a rehabilitative design procedure for existing buildings that uses a stiff rocking core to redistribute plastic deformations along the structure’s height. Additionally, an improved design procedure for braced frame columns is proposed for new frame design. Several representative frames were designed and evaluated using nonlinear transient seismic finite element analysis and large-scale hybrid experimental testing. Predicted, analytical, and experimental response results show reasonable agreement, and the proposed techniques are believed to be reliable for achieving desirable seismic performance in low- to mid-rise steel braced frame structures.

Book excerpt: Self-centering concentrically braced frame (SC-CBF) systems have been developed to increase the drift capacity of braced frame systems prior to damage to reduce post-earthquake damages in braced frames. However, due to special details required by the SC-CBF system, the construction cost of an SC-CBF is expected to be higher than that of a conventional CBF. While recent experimental research has shown better seismic performance of SC-CBF system subjected to design basis earthquakes, superior seismic performance of this system needs to be demonstrated for both structural and nonstructural components in all ground motion levels and more building configurations. Moreover, Stakeholders would be attracted to utilize SC-CBF if higher construction cost of this system can be paid back by lower earthquake induced losses during life time of the building. In this study, the seismic performance and economic effectiveness of SC-CBFs are assessed and compared with CBF system in three building configurations. First, probabilistic demand formulations are developed for engineering demand parameters (inter-story drift, residual drift and peak floor acceleration) using results of nonlinear time history analysis of the buildings under suites of ground motions. Then, Seismic fragility curves, engineering demand (inter-story drift, peak floor acceleration and residual drift) hazard curve and annual probabilities of exceeding damage states are used to evaluate and compare seismic performance of two systems. Finally, expected annual loss and life cycle cost of buildings are evaluated for prototype buildings considering both direct and indirect losses and prevailing uncertainties in all levels of loss analysis. These values are used evaluate economic benefit of using SC-CBF system instead of CBF system and pay-off time (time when the higher construction cost of SC-CBF system is paid back by the lower losses in earthquakes) for building configurations. Additionally, parametric study is performed to find acceptable increase in cost of SC-CBFs comparing to CBFs and impact of economic discount factor, ground motion suite and building occupancies on economic effectiveness of the SC-CBF system in three configurations. Results of this study indicates that, SC-CBF system generally shows better seismic performance due to damages to structural and non-structural drift sensitive components but worse performance due to damages to acceleration sensitive components. Therefore, loss mitigation in structural and non-structural damages are major source of economic benefit in SC-CBFs. SC-CBF system is not feasible for high rise buildings and low seismic active locations. If the cost of SC-CBFs are twice as CBF frames, the higher cost is paid back in a reasonable time during the life time of the buildings. SC-CBFs are more feasible for banks/financial institutions than general office buildings.

However, current seismic design practice in the U.S. is based on elastic structural behavior and accounts for inelastic behavior only in an indirect manner through certain modification factors such as R, I, and Cd. Under moderate to severe earthquakes, inelastic activity, including severe yielding and buckling of structural members can be unevenly distributed in the structure which may result in global collapse or costly repair work. Recently, a new design method has been developed and referred to as Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD). This method directly accounts for inelastic behavior by using pre-selected target drift and yield mechanism as key performance limit states. In this research work, the application of PBPD is successfully extended to design of mid-rise to tall steel Concentrically Braced Frames (CBF) with increased confidence level against collapse and also to tall steel Moment Frames (MF). The PBPD procedure for design of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSW) is also developed. The PBPD method is extended to design of mid-rise to tall CBF structures by proposing several key modifications in the calculation of design base shear. These include: consideration of column axial deformations in estimation of yield and target drifts, lateral force distribution to prevent large story drifts at upper stories due to higher mode effects, and target drift by proposed lambda-factor to account for pinched hysteretic behavior. Moreover, different methods are suggested to enhance the confidence level of mid- to high-rise CBF structures against collapse. These methods include: increase in design base shear by using slightly larger lambda-factor for mid- to high-rise frames, using Split-X configuration for braces, and increasing the minimum required fracture life, Nf. Application of PBPD method in design of tall MF structures is successfully carried out. Modifications for design of tall MF systems, primarily on design of columns, are proposed to achieve this goal. The current PBPD procedure for design of columns in steel MF structures works well for low-rise frames, but results in overdesigned sections for mid- to high-rise frames. It is shown that by applying the proposed modifications in design of tall MF, excellent seismic performance under pushover as well as time-history analyses can be achieved. The PBPD procedure for design of SPSW, an emerging lateral load resisting system, is developed. This procedure uses target drift and yield mechanism as key performance limit states. The pinched hysteretic behavior of SPSW is directly accounted for in this method by using the proposed lambda-factor method. By applying this method in the design of a 4-story SPSW frame, it was shown that the proposed PBPD procedure works very well for design of these systems. The performance criteria of target drifts and yield mechanisms were successfully met for the PBPD designs. In addition, with the proposed PBPD procedure, multiple level design based on appropriate target drifts for each hazard level, can be easily implemented. In general, the PBPD designed frames showed improved performance compared to the code designed SPSW frame, especially under MCE ground motions.

Current AISC seismic design requirements for special concentrically braced frames (SCBFs) prescribe geometric limits to promote ductile yielding and buckling of the brace and use capacity design to size the adjacent non-yielding components. Newer design methods, in particular the balanced design procedure (BDP), adapt the AISC method to increase the ductility of the SCBF system by adding sequentially yielding mechanisms. However, older CBFs (NCBFs) may not meet the geometric, strength, or detailing requirements of SCBFs. The resulting seismic deficiencies can lead to substandard performance, which is concerning because many of these NCBFs are still in use today. The objective of this study is to determine new retrofit strategies and methodologies to improve the seismic performance of NCBFs. The research includes four tests designed to investigate the performance of retrofitted NCBFs. These results were combined with prior tests conducted at the UW which simulated existing and retrofitted NCBFs. Using all of the data, new evaluation and retrofit methodologies were investigated based on the BDP. The evaluation of NCBFs seeks to: (1) identify seismic deficiencies withing the frame and (2) establish a hierarchy of yielding and failure that relates the deficiencies to the performance of the frame. The retrofit methodology aims to size the new components to promote secondary yield mechanisms (in addition to brace yielding) thereby maximizing the frame drift. Examples of applying the retrofit method to a suite of seismically deficient CBFs are provided.

In high seismic regions, special concentrically braced frames (SCBFs) where ductility under seismic loading is necessary. Their large elastic stiffness and strength efficiently sustains the seismic demands during smaller, more frequent earthquakes. During large, infrequent earthquakes, SCBFs exhibit highly nonlinear behavior due to brace buckling and yielding and the inelastic behavior induced by secondary deformation of the framing system. These response modes reduce the system demands relative to an elastic system without supplemental damping. In design the re reduced demands are estimated using a response modification coefficient, commonly termed the R factor. The R factor values are important to the seismic performance of a building. Procedures put forth in FEMAP695 developed to R factors through a formalized procedure with the objective of consistent level of collapse potential for all building types. The primary objective of the research was to evaluate the seismic performance of SCBFs. To achieve this goal, an improved model including a proposed gusset plate connection model for SCBFs that permits accurate simulation of inelastic deformations of the brace, gusset plate connections, beams and columns and brace fracture was developed and validated using a large number of experiments. Response history analyses were conducted using the validated model. A series of different story-height SCBF buildings were designed and evaluated. The FEMAP695 method and an alternate procedure were applied to SCBFs and NCBFs. NCBFs are designed without ductile detailing. The evaluation using P695 method shows contrary results to the alternate evaluation procedure and the current knowledge in which short-story SCBF structures are more venerable than taller counterparts and NCBFs are more vulnerable than SCBFs.

The CBFs possess high stiffness and moderate ductility, while braces are designed to buckle in compression and yield in tension. However, after a brace experiences buckling, its compression strength diminishes and the system undergoes asymmetrical response, while the distribution of internal forces and deformations is influenced by the frequency content of ground motions. Despite the system's stiffness, CBFs are prone to concentrate damage within a floor which leads to the formation of storey mechanism. To preserve the stability of the system during the nonlinear seismic response, the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) imposes limits on a building's height which depends on the selected ductility-related force modification factor, Rd. Thus, the height limit for buildings with moderately ductile concentrically braced frames, MD-CBFs, is 40 m and for limited ductility concentrically braced frames, LD-CBFs, is 60 m. To safely increase the height limit of ductile braced frame buildings, a system labelled Outrigger Braced Frame, OBF, is proposed and developed in this study. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), a building with more than 14 stories or more than 50 meters in height may be considered a high-rise building. The aim of this research is to develop, design, model, and study the seismic performance of mid-rise (e.g. tweleve-storey) and high-rise (e.g., sixteen-storey) OBF buildings subjected to dynamic loads. It is noted that the outrigger system functions by tying together a core system and a perimeter system. Herein, the core system is made of MD-CBFs and the perimeter system is made of gravity columns. Furthermore, only the core braces are designed to dissipate energy, while the outrigger's diagonals are designed to respond in the elastic range. The performance of OBF system is controlled by the amount of added stiffness and optimum location of outriggers across the building's height, the number of levels with outriggers and the intensity of seismic zone. All multi-storey buildings are located in high-risk seismic zone of Victoria, B.C. Canada, on Site Class C. The selection of ground motions was made to capture the seismic characteristics at buildings location. Herein, two sets of crustal and subduction ground motions were considered such as California records and the mega-thrust magnitude 9 Tohoku records, respectively. The nonlinear time-history dynamic analyses were conducted using the OpenSees software. The main objectives of this thesis are three-fold: i) to identify the effect of subduction versus crustal ground motions on the seismic response of low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise MD-CBF buildings and to study their seismic performance from yielding to failure, ii) to provide design method and optimum location for outriggers of OBF steel buildings, iii) to assess the collapse safety of the proposed mid-rise and high-rise OBF steel buildings using FEMA P695 procedure and to compare their seismic performance against that resulted for MD-CBF buildings. It is concluded that the OBF buildings are slightly stiffer than the corresponding MD-CBF buildings, and they experienced lower interstorey drift and residual interstorey drift than the MD-CBF buildings. In all case studies considered here, the collapse margin ratio (CMR) is greater for buildings subjected to crustal ground motions than subduction ground motions. Evaluation of seismic performance of sample 12-storey and 16-storey OBF buildings shows that these buildings are able to pass the collapse safety acceptance criteria, ACMR ≥ ACMR10%, when subjected to both sets of ground motions. On the other hand, the corresponding MD-CBF buildings are not able to pass the collapse safety acceptance criteria when subjected to subduction records set. Hence, special attention should be given when designing buildings in seismic regions which are prone to both types of earthquakes.
