Book excerpt: Throughout the United States accelerated bridge construction is becoming increasingly popular to meet growing transportation demands while keeping construction time and costs to a minimum. This research focuses on eliminating the need to form full-depth concrete bridge deck overhangs, accelerating the construction of concrete bridge decks, by using full-depth precast prestressed concrete deck panels. Full-depth precast overhang panels in combination with cast-in-place (CIP) reinforced concrete are experimentally and analytically investigated to assess the structural performance. Experimental loaddeformation behavior for factored AASHTO LRFD design load limits is examined followed by the collapse capacity of the panel-to-panel seam that exists in the system. Adequate strength and stiffness of the proposed full-depth panels deem the design safe for implementation for the Rock Creek Bridge in Fort Worth, Texas. New failure theories are derived for interior and exterior bridge deck spans as present code-based predictions provide poor estimates of the ultimate capacity. A compound shear-flexure failure occurs at interior bays between the CIP topping and stay-in-place (SIP) panel. Overhang failure loads are characterized as a mixed failure of flexure on the loaded panel and shear at the panel-to-panel seam. Based on these results design recommendations are presented to optimize the reinforcing steel layout used in concrete bridge decks.

A significant number of published papers, reports, etc., were examined to determine the effectiveness of full depth precast panels for bridge deck replacement. A detailed description of the experimental methodology was developed which includes design and fabrication of the panels and assembly of the bridge. The design and construction process was carried out in cooperation with the project Technical Review Panel. The major components of the bridge deck system were investigated. This includes the transverse joints and the different materials within the joint as well as composite action. The materials investigated within the joint were polymer concrete, non-shrink grout, and set-45 for the transverse joint. The transverse joints were subjected to direct shear tests, direct tension tests, and flexure tests. These tests exhibited the excellent behavior of the system in terms of strength and failure modes. Shear key tests were also conducted. The shear connection study focused on investigating the composite behavior of the system based on varying the number of shear studs within a respective pocket as well as varying the number of pockets within a respective panel. The results indicated that this shear connection is extremely efficient in rendering the system under full composite action. Finite element analysis was conducted to determine the behavior of the shear connection prior to initiation of the actual full scale tests. In addition, finite element analysis was also performed with respect to the transverse joint tests in an effort to determine the behavior of the joints prior to actual testing. The most significant phase of the project was testing a full-scale model. The bridge was assembled in accordance with the procedures developed as part of the study on full-depth precast panels and the results obtained through this research. The system proved its effectiveness in withstanding the applied loading that exceeded eight times the truck loading in addition to the maximum negative and positive moment application. Only hairline cracking was observed in the deck at the maximum applied load. Of most significance was the fact that full composite action was achieved between the precast panels and the steel supporting system, and the exceptional performance of the transverse joint between adjacent panels.

Book excerpt: By employing prefabricated bridge elements and systems, Accelerated Bridge Construction reduces on-site construction time and traffic disruptions, and enhances long-term performance. ABC is particularly advantageous for short-span bridges that are well-suited to standardized prefabrication. In such cases, the entire superstructure and substructure can often be constructed using prefabricated deck elements, modular decks, or systems that span the full bridge width. The construction methods can range from traditional crane installations to Self-Propelled Modular Transport units or slide-in techniques for moving the entire superstructures. This book introduces the concept of ABC and examines its application in the context of short-span bridge construction. It categorizes and details short-span bridges based on various criteria and evaluates the performance of the existing bridges. Decision-making processes regarding the adoption of ABC, choice of elements, systems, and construction methods are also discussed. Additionally, the book covers the inspection of short-span bridges and includes a design example.

Book excerpt: The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has developed a design for a precast composite slab-span system (PCSSS) to be used in accelerated bridge construction. The system consists of shallow inverted-tee precast beams placed between supports with cast-in-place (CIP) concrete placed on top, forming a composite slab-span system. Suitable for spans between 20 and 60 ft., the MnDOT PCSSS is useful for replacing a large number of aging conventional slab-span bridges throughout the United States highway system. The PCSSS has particular durability, constructability, and economical concerns that affect its value as a viable bridge design. To address these concerns, the performance of existing PCSSS bridges was evaluated and a review of a number of PCSSS design details was conducted. The field inspections demonstrated that design changes made to the PCSSS over its development have improved performance. A parametric design study was also conducted to investigate the effects of continuity design on the economy of the PCSSS. It was recommended that the PCSSS be designed as simply supported rather than as a continuous system.

Book excerpt: Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques have resulted in innovative options that save time and money during the construction of bridges. One such group of techniques that has generated considerable interest is the usage of individual precast concrete members. Utilizing precast concrete decks allows for offsite curing, thus eliminating long delays due to formwork and concrete curing time. These precast concrete decks have inherent joints between the individual panels. These joints are locations for potential leakage, which can lead to corrosion or inadequate long-term performance. Post-tensioning the precast deck panels helps to eliminate leakage; however, conventional longitudinal post-tensioning systems require complete deck replacement in the event of a single faulty deck panel. A proposed post-tensioned, curved-strand connection allows for a single panel to be replaced. The capacity of the proposed curved-strand connection was investigated in order to compare its behavior to other systems that are currently in use. Tests were performed in composite negative bending, beam shear, and positive bending. The curved strand connection was found to behave similarly to the standard post-tensioning system in positive bending and shear. The curved-strand connection was found to be comparable to a standard post-tensioning system. The ultimate capacity of the curved-strand connection in negative bending was found to be 97% of the standard post-tensioning. Pre-stress losses were measured and predicted for the service life of the connection and were found to be 6% at the 75- year service life of a bridge.

Book excerpt: Longitudinal bar debonding allowed spread of yielding and prevented premature failure of reinforcements in UHPC-filled duct connections and grouted coupler column pedestal. The SMA-reinforced ECC column showed superior seismic performance compared to a conventional column in which the plastic hinge damage was limited to only ECC cover spalling even under 12% drift ratio cycles. The column residual displacements were 79% lower than CIP residual displacements on average due to the superelastic NiTi SMA longitudinal reinforcement, and higher base shear capacity and higher displacement capacity were observed. The analytical modeling methods were simple and sufficiently accurate for general design and analyses of precast components proposed in the present study. The proposed symmetrical material model for reinforcing NiTi superelastic SMA was found to be a viable alternative to the more complex asymmetrical model.

Book excerpt: Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) has become increasingly popular in the eyes of state and federal transportation agencies because of its numerous advantages. To effectively execute ABC projects, designers utilize prefabricated structural elements that can be quickly assembled to form functional structural systems. It is advantageous to the bridge designer if these systems emulate the design and behavior of conventional cast-in-place systems. If this can be achieved, typical analysis and design procedures can be used. The difficulty with developing emulative systems is usually encountered in the design and detailing of connections. Substructure connections are particularly critical in seismic zones because they must dissipate energy through significant cyclic nonlinear deformations while maintaining their capacity and the integrity of the structural system. The research presented in this dissertation focused on developing and evaluating earthquake resistant connections for use in accelerated bridge construction. The project was comprised of three main components; testing of five large-scale precast reinforced concrete column models, a series of individual component tests on mechanical reinforcing bar splices, and extensive analytical studies. Column studies included the design and construction of five half-scale bridge column models that were tested under reversed slow cyclic loading. Four new moment connections for precast column-footing joints were developed each utilizing mechanical reinforcing bar splices to create connectivity with reinforcing bars in a cast-in-place footing. Two different mechanical splices were studied: an upset headed coupler and grout-filled sleeve coupler. Along with the splice type, the location of splices within the plastic hinge zone was also a test variable. All column models were designed to emulate conventional cast-in-place construction thus were compared to a conventional cast-in-place test model. Results indicate that the new connections are promising and duplicate the behavior of conventional cast-in-place construction with respect to key response parameters. However, it was discovered that the plastic hinge mechanism can be significantly affected by the presence of splices and result in reduced displacement ductility capacity. In order to better understand the behavior of mechanical splices, a series of uniaxial tests were completed on mechanically-spliced reinforcing bars under different loading configurations: monotonic static tension, dynamic tension, and slow cyclic loading. Results from this portion of the project also aided the development of analytical models for the half- and prototype-scale column models. Results indicated that, regardless of loading configuration, specimens failed by bar rupture without damage to the splice itself. The analytical studies conducted using OpenSEES included development of microscope models for the two mechanical reinforcing bars splices and full analytical models of the five half-scale columns, which were both compared with respective experimental results to validate the modeling procedures and assumptions. Prototype-scale analytical models were also developed to conduct parametric studies investigating the sensitivity of the newly developed ABC connections to changes in design details. In general, the results of this study indicate that the newly develop ABC connections, which utilize mechanically-spliced connections, are suitable for moderate and high seismic regions. However, emulative design approaches are not suitable for all of the connections develop. A set of design recommendations are provided to guide bridge engineers in the analysis and design of these new connections.

Book excerpt: A bridge with precast bridge deck panels was built at the Virginia Tech Structures Laboratory to examine constructibility issues, creep and shrinkage behavior, and strength and fatigue performance of transverse joints, different types of shear connectors, and different shear pocket spacings. The bridge consisted of two AASHTO type II girders, 40 ft long and simply supported, and five precast bridge deck panels. Two of the transverse joints were epoxied male-female joints and the other two transverse joints were grouted female-female joints. Two different pocket spacings were studied: 4 ft pocket spacing and 2 ft pocket spacing. Two different shear connector types were studied: hooked reinforcing bars and a new shear stud detail that can be used with concrete girders. The construction process was well documented. The changes in strain in the girders and deck were examined and compared to a finite element model to examine the effects of differential creep and shrinkage. After the finite element model verification study, the model was used to predict the long term stresses in the deck and determine if the initial level of post-tensioning was adequate to keep the transverse joints in compression throughout the estimated service life of the bridge. Cyclic loading tests and flexural strength tests were performed to examine performance of the different pocket spacings, shear connector types and transverse joint configurations. A finite element study examined the performance of the AASHTO LRFD shear friction equation for the design of the horizontal shear connectors. The initial level of post-tensioning in the bridge was adequate to keep the transverse joints in compression throughout the service life of the bridge. Both types of pocket spacings and shear connectors performed exceptionally well. The AASHTO LRFD shear friction equation was shown to be applicable to deck panel systems and was conservative for determining the number of shear connectors required in each pocket. A recommended design and detailing procedure was developed for the shear connectors and shear pockets.
