Book excerpt: This study presents an innovative bridge column technology for application in seismic regions. The proposed technology combines a precast post-tensioned composite steel-concrete hollow-core column with supplemental energy dissipation, in a way to reduce on-site construction burdens and minimize earthquake-induced residual deformations, damage, and associated repair costs. The column consists of two steel cylindrical shells, with high-performance concrete cast in between. Both shells act as permanent formwork; the outer shell substitutes the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement, as it works in composite action with the concrete, whereas the inner shell removes unnecessary concrete volume from the column, prevents concrete implosion, and prevents buckling of energy dissipating dowels when embedded in the concrete. Large inelastic rotations can be accommodated at the end joints with minimal structural damage, since gaps are allowed to open at these locations and to close upon load reversal. Longitudinal post-tensioned high-strength steel threaded bars, designed to respond elastically, in combination with gravity forces ensure self-centering behavior. Internal or external steel devices provide energy dissipation by axial yielding. This dissertation reviews the main principles and requirements for the design of these columns. The experimental findings from two quasi-static reversed cyclic tests are then presented, and numerical simulations of the experimental response are proposed.

Book excerpt: Longitudinal bar debonding allowed spread of yielding and prevented premature failure of reinforcements in UHPC-filled duct connections and grouted coupler column pedestal. The SMA-reinforced ECC column showed superior seismic performance compared to a conventional column in which the plastic hinge damage was limited to only ECC cover spalling even under 12% drift ratio cycles. The column residual displacements were 79% lower than CIP residual displacements on average due to the superelastic NiTi SMA longitudinal reinforcement, and higher base shear capacity and higher displacement capacity were observed. The analytical modeling methods were simple and sufficiently accurate for general design and analyses of precast components proposed in the present study. The proposed symmetrical material model for reinforcing NiTi superelastic SMA was found to be a viable alternative to the more complex asymmetrical model.

Book excerpt: This project assessed the use of ASTM A706 Grade 80 reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete columns. Grade 80 is not currently allowed in reinforced concrete columns due to lack of information on the material characteristics and column performance. Six half-scale, circular columns were tested: three constructed with Grade 60 reinforcement and three constructed with Grade 80 reinforcement. Designs followed standard design methodologies used by State Highway Agencies (including AASHTO). Results indicate that columns constructed with Grade 80 reinforcement performed similar to columns constructed with conventional ASTM A706 Grade 60 reinforcement. Computational modeling was performed using OpenSees for all six columns. Results indicate that the columns constructed with Grade 80 reinforcement achieved similar resistance and displacement and curvature ductility values when compared with the reference columns constructed with Grade 60 reinforcement. The columns constructed with Grade 60 reinforcement showed larger hysteretic energy dissipation than the columns constructed with Grade 80 reinforcement.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST) columns have several advantages over reinforced concrete columns in that: (1) the steel tube provides confinement of the concrete and reduces damage to the concrete core, (2) they possess very high shear capacities, (3) the steel tube is placed at the optimum location for flexural resistance, and (4) they sustain large drift demands without damage. CFSTs also accelerate construction since: (1) the steel tube acts as permanent formwork, (2) in a slab-column system, the columns and slabs may be cast simultaneously, (3) most of the internal reinforcement can be eliminated. Previously an experimental program was undertaken to investigate a proposed connection for use in flat-plate construction. The connection consists of steel rings on either side of the column with post-tensioned bolts to connect the rings and provide active confinement to the slab. The forces are transferred from the upper column to the lower column through reinforcement welded to the inside of the tube of the lower column. The ring also increases the critical perimeter for shear. A four-specimen program investigated the impact of the following design variables: (1) ring size, (2) number of bolts within the ring flange, and (3) bolts outside of the ring. A reference specimen using conventional stud-rail detailing was built. This experimental program aimed to further that research by investigating the effect of slab depth on the connection. In addition, two full-scale push-through tests were conducted to better understand the two-way shear behavior of the proposed connection. The conventional stud-rail connection sustained damage at low drift levels, which resulted in loss of strength. This behavior compromises the integrity and resilience of flat-plate buildings. The new connection provides drift capacities of 4% or greater before strength loss and mitigates damage, meeting the structural objective of integrity and resilience after a large seismic event. The research suggests that the ring dimension depends on both the column size and thickness of the slab. Test results showed better behavior with two rows of bolts on the ring flange. Although bolts outside the ring are beneficial, this detail was deemed impractical for new construction but may be viable for increasing shear capacity in retrofit design. Two-way shear strength resulted in a higher capacity for the connection with the larger ring flange and that ACI predictions of capacity were conservative.

Book excerpt: Concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns are increasingly used in modern composite construction due to their high strength, high ductility, high corrosion resistance, high durability and aesthetics and ease of maintenance. Thin-walled CFSST columns are characterized by the different strain-hardening behavior of stainless steel in tension and in compression, local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement. Design codes and numerical models often overestimate or underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFSST columns. This book presents accurate and efficient computational models for the nonlinear inelastic analysis and design of CFSST short and slender columns under axial load and biaxial bending. The effects of different strain-hardening characteristics of stainless steel in tension and in compression, progressive local and post-local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement are taken into account in the computational models. The numerical models simulate the axial load-strain behavior, moment-curvature curves, axial load-deflection responses and axial load-moment strength interaction diagrams of CFSST columns. The book describes the mathematical formulations, computational procedures and model verifications for circular and rectangular CFSST short and slender columns. The behavior of CFSST columns under various loading conditions is demonstrated by numerous numerical examples. This book is written for practising structural and civil engineers, academic researchers and graduate students in civil engineering who are interested in the latest computational techniques and design methods for CFSST columns.

Book excerpt: A dual lateral-force resisting system consisting of a primary lateral-force resisting system and secondary concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns placed in the gravity framing is presented in this thesis. Dual lateral-force resisting systems consisting of moment frames acting with a secondary system are advantageous because the dual system explicitly provides increased redundancy, added safety against collapse, and added resistance to damage, compared to single lateral-force resisting systems. The dual CFT system concept explored in this study relies on the primary lateral-force resisting system to supply the main lateral strength, while additional lateral strength and robustness is provided by the CFT columns. To explore the viability of the concept, the predicted seismic performance of 1-story, 2-story, and 4-story office conventional buildings, with perimeter steel moment frames and wide-flange gravity columns was compared to the performance of same buildings but employing square HSS columns filled with unreinforced concrete. The analyses predicted that, compared to buildings with the wide-flange columns, buildings with the dual CFT system were 20% to 83% less susceptible to seismic collapse, depending on the strength and ductility of the primary moment frame, the orientation of the gravity columns, the number of stories. Using high-strength, thick, or slightly large CFT columns did not significantly improve collapse safety. Buildings with dual CFT system generally had improved seismic performance, depending on the moment frame design, the number of stories, and the intensity of the ground shaking. Buildings with dual CFT system had up to 45% lower repair costs, up to 64% shorter repair time, and a lower probability that the building would be deemed unsafe.
