Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 71. The Antarctic Ice Sheet has greatly affected global climate, sea level, ocean circulation, and southern hemisphere biota during Cenozoic times. Much of our understanding of the evolution of the ice sheet has been inferred from isotopic studies on distant deep-ocean sediments, because few Cenozoic rocks are exposed on the Antarctic continent. Yet, large differences occur between past ice volumes inferred from isotopic studies and those inferred from low-latitude sea-level variation. The massive quantities of glacially transported terrigenous sediments that lie beneath the Antarctic continental margin provide an additional, more direct record of the inferred ice sheet fluctuations. Volume 68 addresses the history of ice sheet fluctuations as recorded by geological and geophysical investigations of selected areas of the Antarctic continental margin. As described below, the volume gives data and results from on-going research by a major multinational project directed toward better understanding the impact of Antarctic Ice Sheet fluctuations on global sea levels and climates.

Book excerpt: Many nations conduct research and engage in other scientific activities on our frozen continentâ€"Antarctica. Each year the U.S. National Committee for the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) compiles a book that includes these nations' reports of scientific pursuits undertaken by their citizens in Antarctica during the previous austral summer and of planned activities for the next season. This book details the activities that occurred in 1990 and is of particular value to policymakers and scientists throughout the world who are planning Antarctic programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Wave Propagation in Stratified Media presents a systematic treatment of the interaction of seismic waves with Earth structure. The theoretical development is physically based and is closely tied to the nature of the seismograms observed across a wide range of distance scales - from a few kilometres as in shallow reflection work for geophysical prospecting, to many thousands of kilometres for major earthquakes. A unified framework is presented for all classes of seismic phenomena, for both body waves and surface waves. Since its first publication in 1983 this book has been an important resource for understanding the way in which seismic waves can be understood in terms of reflection and transmission properties of Earth models, and how complete theoretical seismograms can be calculated. The methods allow the development of specific approximations that allow concentration on different seismic arrivals and hence provide a direct tie to seismic observations.

Book excerpt: Annals of the International Geophysical Year, Volume 30: Seismology is an eight-chapter text that provides seismological data observed during the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The resolution to include seismology in the IGY program has considerably stimulated seismic researches and accelerated the development of nets of seismic stations in many countries. After a brief introduction to seismological stations and equipment, this book goes on dealing with the approved proposal of the U.S.S.R. to establish three seismological stations in the Arctic zone and recommended to other nations that maintain seismological stations in that zone. A chapter presents the microseismological activities observed in various regions, emphasizing their geographical differences. Other chapters present a summary of special seismic crustal studies during the IGY to examine Earth's crust and Antarctic structures. The final chapters contain data on long period waves and the Lg phase, as well as the measurements of the Earth's crust strain. This book will be of value to geophysicists and researchers in the field.
