Book Synopsis Fire Following Earthquake by : Charles Scawthorn
Download or read book Fire Following Earthquake written by Charles Scawthorn and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph covers the entire range of fire following earthquake (FFE) issues, from historical fires to 20th-century fires in Kobe, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and Northridge. FFE has the potential of causing catastrophic losses in the United States, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and other seismically active countries with wood houses. This comprehensive book on FFE and urban conflagrations provides state-of-the-practice insight on unique issues, such as large diameter flex hose applications by fire and water departments. Topics include: History of past fires; Computer modeling of fire spread in the post-earthquake urban environment; Concurrent damage and fire impacts for water, power gas, communication and transportation systems; Examples of reliable water systems built or designed in San Francisco, Vancouver, Berkeley, and Kyoto; Use of large diameter (5 in.) and ultralarge diameter (12 in.) flex hose for fire fighting and water restoration; and Cost-effectiveness of various FFE mitigation strategies, with a detailed benefit-cost model. Water utility engineers, fire fighting professionals, and emergency response planners will benefit from reading this book.

Book Synopsis Induced Seismicity Potential in Energy Technologies by : National Research Council
Download or read book Induced Seismicity Potential in Energy Technologies written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past several years, some energy technologies that inject or extract fluid from the Earth, such as oil and gas development and geothermal energy development, have been found or suspected to cause seismic events, drawing heightened public attention. Although only a very small fraction of injection and extraction activities among the hundreds of thousands of energy development sites in the United States have induced seismicity at levels noticeable to the public, understanding the potential for inducing felt seismic events and for limiting their occurrence and impacts is desirable for state and federal agencies, industry, and the public at large. To better understand, limit, and respond to induced seismic events, work is needed to build robust prediction models, to assess potential hazards, and to help relevant agencies coordinate to address them. Induced Seismicity Potential in Energy Technologies identifies gaps in knowledge and research needed to advance the understanding of induced seismicity; identify gaps in induced seismic hazard assessment methodologies and the research to close those gaps; and assess options for steps toward best practices with regard to energy development and induced seismicity potential.

Book Synopsis Subsurface Conditions by : Michael Shaw Rosenbaum
Download or read book Subsurface Conditions written by Michael Shaw Rosenbaum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterisation of the shallow subsurface provides civil, geotechnical and environmental applications with precise definitions of geomechanical and geohydrological properties. Over the past decade, the rapid pace of technological innovation has outstripped the ability of many researchers and potential users to evaluate and adopt promising new characterisation methods. Modern information technologies and information management concepts provide the basis of new paradigms and applications. This book defines future research needs for geological modelling and ground characterisation, including better dialogue between data provides and users and faster, better and less expensive methods for the creation and dissemination of subsurface characterisations.

Book Synopsis Eames House Conservation Project by : Laura Matarese
Download or read book Eames House Conservation Project written by Laura Matarese and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this multi-author volume, six chapters cover the investigations undertaken by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) and its consultants between 2011 and 2016 at the Eames House. Including analysis of paint stratigraphies, pigments, and organic binders; in situ paint investigation of the exterior steelwork of the house and studio; wood panel investigation and conservation treatment; environmental assessment; geotechnical evaluation; and a landscape survey and assessment, this publication supplies technical guidance for immediate conservation needs and long-term maintenance of the house. Numerous testing and investigation techniques were used, demonstrating the wide range of approaches to conservation that are available to others charged with maintaining a building from the modern era. A preface and introduction set the investigations in context of the overall goals of the Eames House Conservation Project and the Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative (CMAI). The GCI began working with the Charles and Ray Eames House Preservation Foundation (Eames Foundation) on the Eames House Conservation Project in 2011, which was catalyzed by the removal of the house's living room furniture for an exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). This provided a unique opportunity to address the wear and tear on the house and was the first field project under the CMAI, which seeks to advance the practice of conserving twentieth-century heritage.
