Book excerpt: In 1998 Armenia was commemorating the tenth anniversary of the catastrophic Spitak earthquake. The Second International Conference on "Earthquake Hazard and Seismic Risk Reduction" sponsored by the Government of the Republic of Armenia and United Nation's International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (UN/IDNDR) was held in dedication to that event between 14-21 September (later referred to as Yerevan Conference). The Yerevan Conference has been organized by the National Survey for Seismic Protection (NSSP) of the Republic of Armenia. All level's decision-makers (from the ministers to the local authorities), politicians, scientists, leaders of the executive and legislative powers, psychologists, leading businessmen, representatives from the private sector and the media as well as from the International Organizations have been invited by the Armenian NSSP to take part in joint discussion of the Seismic Risk Reduction Problem for the first time in the history of such forums. Armenian NSSP's such initiative has been triggered by the experience of the Spitak earthquake and other disasters. They showed that it will be possible to reduce the risks, posed by the natural disaster, only through the common efforts of all the community in co-operation with the International institutions.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF THE SOUTH CHINA REGION Submitted by MAK SUM for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong March 2005 Recent researches on seismic hazard assessment of Hong Kong have been based on the Component Attenuation Model (CAM), which uses a modeling approach to determine the attenuation effects of the wave transmission path. The method requires knowledge on the crustal geophysical properties, which is previously not available for the region. This study has used the data from the existing earthquake database collected by the digital seismic stations of the Hong Kong Observatory to estimate the crustal properties for Hong Kong and the neighboring region. Additional information on the motions nature of local faults in Hong Kong acquired by this study has also enhanced our understanding of the stress field. This study consists of three specific components. The first one determined the focal mechanisms of several earthquakes near Hong Kong by analyzing their body wave amplitude ratios and the P polarities. The fault motions were found to be generally strike-slip, with the principal compressive stress direction consistent with the regional stress field and in-situ stress data determined by borehole hydrofracturing. The second one investigated the shear wave velocity structure of the shallow crust of Hong Kong by analyzing the dispersion property of R wave generated by quarry blasts. The group velocities for fundamental mode R waves of period T=0.4-1.3 sec were computed and inverted to obtain the velocity structure for 0-1.5 km death range. Observed lateral variation in velocity was correlated with the surficial lithology. The shear wave velocity was found to vary from 1.80 to 2.27 km/sec at the surface, and 2.12 to 2.35 km/sec at the depth of 1.5 km. The third component investigated the crustal anelastic attenuation property, characterized by the Q factor, of the region. Analysis of the coda wave attenuation of 25 local earthquakes, based on the single backscattering model, has yielded Q values (Q at frequency f = 1 Hz) of 224, 342 and 262 for distance ranges RDOI: 10.5353/th_b3058889 Subjects: Earthquake hazard analysis - China - Hong Kong Earthquake hazard analysis - China - Guangdong Sheng Earthquake hazard analysis - China - Fujiang Sheng Earthquake hazard analysis - China - Guangxi Zhuangzu Zizhiqu

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive treatment of earthquake hazards in Lebanon and its vicinity. A thorough review of the tectonics of the region is given alongside a re-assessment of the historical and instrumental earthquake records. Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is undertaken and hazard maps are presented in terms of peak ground parameters as well as spectral ordinates (acceleration and displacement). Owing to their significance to the economy of Lebanon, the three cities of Beirut, Sidon and Tripoli are subjected to site-specific earthquake hazard assessment. The maps provided are the best available estimates of seismic hazards in Lebanon and are recommended for use in risk assessment. Also, the basis and framework for similar studies in the Levant are given. The rigorous and pragmatic approach adopted by the authors renders the book accessible to design engineers and researchers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK is perhaps unique globally in that it presents the full spectrum of geological time, stratigraphy and associated lithologies within its boundaries. With this wide range of geological assemblages comes a wide range of geological hazards, whether they be geophysical (earthquakes, effects of volcanic eruptions, tsunami, landslides), geotechnical (collapsible, compressible, liquefiable, shearing, swelling and shrinking soils), geochemical (dissolution, radon and methane gas hazards) or georesource related (coal, chalk and other mineral extraction). An awareness of these hazards and the risks that they pose is a key requirement of the engineering geologist. The Geological Society considered that a Working Party Report would help to put the study and assessment of geohazards into the wider social context, helping the engineering geologist to better communicate the issues concerning geohazards in the UK to the client and the public. This volume sets out to define and explain these geohazards, to detail their detection, monitoring and management and to provide a basis for further research and understanding.
