Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides guidance for engineers to use in strengthening buildings found to be deficient in seismic resistance. The guidance is intended to serve as the basis for criteria for determining the suitability of specific strengthening schemes for a building and applying specific strengthening methods. Various strengthening methods which have been used in the past are reviewed, with emphasis given to those most applicable to Army needs. Detailed guidelines for the application of two methods-pneumatic application of concrete and use of epoxy compounds-are provided, along with advantages and disadvantages of each. (Author).

Book excerpt: The book, after two introductory chapters on seismic design principles and structural seismic analysis methods, proceeds with the detailed description of seismic design methods for steel building structures. These methods include all the well-known methods, like force-based or displacement-based methods, plus some other methods developed by the present authors or other authors that have reached a level of maturity and are applicable to a large class of steel building structures. For every method, detailed practical examples and supporting references are provided in order to illustrate the methods and demonstrate their merits. As a unique feature, the present book describes not just one, as it is the case with existing books on seismic design of steel structures, but various seismic design methods including application examples worked in detail. The book is a valuable source of information, not only for MS and PhD students, but also for researchers and practicing engineers engaged with the design of steel building structures.

This report describes and discusses modal analysis methods used in the dynamic analysis of structures in conjunction with the earthquake response spectra and time history methods. Elastic and inelastic conditions are discussed, as well as structural damping and assumptions and limitations of the methods. Example calculations are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) handbook can be used by trained personnel to identify, inventory, and screen buildings that are potentially seismically vulnerable. The RVS procedure comprises a method and several forms that help users to quickly identify, inventory, and score buildings according to their risk of collapse if hit by major earthquakes. The RVS handbook describes how to identify the structural type and key weakness characteristics, how to complete the screening forms, and how to manage a successful RVS program.

Prendergast and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army is developing a capability to economically identify and evaluate the seismic capacity and strengthening strategies for essential and high potential loss facilities at Army installations, i.e., Mission Affordable Seismic Strengthening (MASS). One of the technological needs to achieve MASS is the development of a facility seismic hazard indexing procedure to identify existing facilities that are potentially seismically hazardous based on the information in the real property inventory for Army installations. The basic concept of a seismic hazard priority-ranking procedure for Army buildings described in this volume is an integral part of the facility seismic hazard indexing procedure. The basic concept provides the framework for a preliminary, subjective seismic safety evaluation of existing Army buildings based on an analysis of the information contained in the inventory of Army military real property and the anticipated seismic exposure hazard. Further development of the basic concept is required to refine the basic indices, to establish weighting factors, and to automate the concept.

Book excerpt: These guidelines offer practical recommendations on several aspects affecting the design and safety of new and existing petrochemical facilities both during and following an earthquake. In the area of new design, this book emphasizes interpretations of the intent of building codes as applied to petrochemical facilities, and gives practical guidance on design details and considerations that are not included in building codes. For existing facilities, the authors present evaluation methodologies that rely heavily on experience from past earthquakes, coupled with focused analyses. Guidelines for Seismic Evaluation and Design of Petrochemical Facilities is an updated edition in a collection of state-of-the-practice reports produced by the ASCE Petrochemical Committee. It will be valuable to structural design engineers, operating company personnel responsible for establishing seismic design and construction standards, and local building authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares current and tentative seismic design provisions for two types of buildings: (1) Letterman Army Hospital, an existing 10-story, reinforced concrete building located in the Presidio of San Francisco, CA, whose design was based upon the 1964 Uniform Building Code (UBC), and (2) a three-story, ductile moment resistant steel frame building located in a region of high seismicity and designed as an essential building. The comparisons for Letterman Hospital include the magnitude and distribution of the seismic story shears and lateral deflections for the 1964 UBC, the 1975 Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) provisions the 1978 Applied Technology Council's tentative design provisions (ATC-3) the TM 5-809-10 Appendix proposed design provisions, Agababian Associates' (AA) two-dimensional time history modal analysis, U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory's (CERL) three-dimensional response spectrum modal analysis and PMB Systems Engineering Incorporated's (PMB) three-dimensional response spectrum modal analysis. The comparisons for the three-story, ductile moment resistant steel frame building include the seismic design forces, story shears, lateral deflections, member sizes, and frame weights for the transverse direction if the building when designed in accordance with the 1975 SEAOC provisions, the 1978 ATC-3 equivalent lateral force procedure, the 1978 ATC-3 modal analysis procedure, and the TM 5-809-10 Appendix proposed provisions.

Book excerpt: This full color manual is intended to explain the principles of seismic design for those without a technical background in engineering and seismology. The primary intended audience is that of architects, and includes practicing architects, architectural students and faculty in architectural schools who teach structures and seismic design. For this reason the text and graphics are focused on those aspects of seismic design that are important for the architect to know.
