Book Synopsis Seismic Design of Buildings to Eurocode 8 by : Ahmed Elghazouli
Download or read book Seismic Design of Buildings to Eurocode 8 written by Ahmed Elghazouli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the seismic design of building structures and their foundations to Eurocode 8. It covers the principles of seismic design in a clear but brief manner and then links these concepts to the provisions of Eurocode 8. It addresses the fundamental concepts related to seismic hazard, ground motion models, basic dynamics, seismic analysis, siting considerations, structural layout, and design philosophies, then leads to the specifics of Eurocode 8. Code procedures are applied with the aid of walk-through design examples which, where possible, deal with a common case study in most chapters. As well as an update throughout, this second edition incorporates three new and topical chapters dedicated to specific seismic design aspects of timber buildings and masonry structures, as well as base-isolation and supplemental damping. There is renewed interest in the use of sustainable timber buildings, and masonry structures still represent a popular choice in many areas. Moreover, seismic isolation and supplemental damping can offer low-damage solutions which are being increasingly considered in practice. The book stems primarily from practical short courses on seismic design which have been run over a number of years and through the development Eurocode 8. The contributors to this book are either specialist academics with significant consulting experience in seismic design, or leading practitioners who are actively engaged in large projects in seismic areas. This experience has provided significant insight into important areas in which guidance is required.
Book Synopsis Shear Forces Developed in Link Beams of Eccentric Braced Frames by : John P. Evans
Download or read book Shear Forces Developed in Link Beams of Eccentric Braced Frames written by John P. Evans and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eccentric braced frames have been a topic of research in seismic design over the past twenty years. The idea of eccentric bracing is a relatively new method used in practice to satisfy seismic design requirements. They have been proven to give reliable results in tests using simulated earthquake events, as well as provide an economical advantage over other framing methods. Two one-story eccentric braced frame models were created using computer generated finite element analysis. The example chosen for this study are discussed further. The maximum shear stress distribution in the link beam of the frame, using finite element analysis, will be investigated herein. The results of the shear stress produced gives insight to shear forces developed in the link beam of eccentric braced frames. The results of shear forces produced are compared with those calculated by structural engineers using commonly used hand calculated equations.

Book Synopsis Vibration of Buildings to Wind and Earthquake Loads by : T. Balendra
Download or read book Vibration of Buildings to Wind and Earthquake Loads written by T. Balendra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in the development of high strength materials, coupled with more advanced computational methods and design procedures, have led to a new generation of tall and slender buildings. These structures are very sensitive to the most common dynamic loads; wind and earthquakes. The primary requirement for a successful design is to provide safety while taking into account serviceability requirements. This book provides a well-balanced and broad coverage of the information needed for the design of structural systems for wind- and earthquake-resistant buildings. It covers topics such as the basic concepts in structural dynamics and structural systems, the assessment of wind and earthquake loads acting on the system, the evaluation of the system response to such dynamic loads and the design for extreme loading. The text is generously illustrated and supported by numerical examples and will be of great interest to practising engineers and researchers in structural, civil and design engineering and also to architects. The author has drawn on his experience as a teacher, researcher and consultant.
