Book excerpt: This useful textbook/reference presents an accessible primer on the fundamentals of image texture analysis, as well as an introduction to the K-views model for extracting and classifying image textures. Divided into three parts, the book opens with a review of existing models and algorithms for image texture analysis, before delving into the details of the K-views model. The work then concludes with a discussion of popular deep learning methods for image texture analysis. Topics and features: provides self-test exercises in every chapter; describes the basics of image texture, texture features, and image texture classification and segmentation; examines a selection of widely-used methods for measuring and extracting texture features, and various algorithms for texture classification; explains the concepts of dimensionality reduction and sparse representation; discusses view-based approaches to classifying images; introduces the template for the K-views algorithm, as well as a range of variants of this algorithm; reviews several neural network models for deep machine learning, and presents a specific focus on convolutional neural networks. This introductory text on image texture analysis is ideally suitable for senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students of computer science, who will benefit from the numerous clarifying examples provided throughout the work.

The statistical models for the image restoration problem, use of Markov random fields as models of texture, and mathematical models of graphics are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the univariate and multivariate random field models for images, stochastic image models generated by random tessellations of the plane, and long crested wave models. Other topics include the Boolean model and random sets, structural basis for image description, and structure in co-occurrence matrices for texture analysis. This publication is useful to specialists and professionals working in the field of image processing.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "In this paper we propose a multiresolution Markov Random Field (MMRF) model for segmenting textured images. The Multiresolution Fourier Transform (MFT) is used to provide a set of spatially localised texture descriptors, which are based on a two-component model of texture, in which one component is a deformation, representing the structural or deterministic elements and the other is a stochastic one. Stochastic relaxation labelling is adopted to maximise the likelihood and assign the class label with highest probability to the block (site) being visited. Class information is propagated from low spatial resolution to high spatial resolution, via appropriate modifications to the interaction energies defining the field, to minimise class-position uncertainty. Experiments on the segmentation of natural textures are used to show the potential of the method."

The issues of parameter estimation, neighborhood selection, and model orders were examined. It is concluded that the MAP approach for region segmentation generally works well on images having a large content of microtextures which can be properly modeled by both AR and GMAF models. On the texture images, second order AR and GMRF models were shown to be adequate."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with selected problems of machine perception, using various 2D and 3D imaging sensors. It proposes several new original methods, and also provides a detailed state-of-the-art overview of existing techniques for automated, multi-level interpretation of the observed static or dynamic environment. To ensure a sound theoretical basis of the new models, the surveys and algorithmic developments are performed in well-established Bayesian frameworks. Low level scene understanding functions are formulated as various image segmentation problems, where the advantages of probabilistic inference techniques such as Markov Random Fields (MRF) or Mixed Markov Models are considered. For the object level scene analysis, the book mainly relies on the literature of Marked Point Process (MPP) approaches, which consider strong geometric and prior interaction constraints in object population modeling. In particular, key developments are introduced in the spatial hierarchical decomposition of the observed scenarios, and in the temporal extension of complex MRF and MPP models. Apart from utilizing conventional optical sensors, case studies are provided on passive radar (ISAR) and Lidar-based Bayesian environment perception tasks. It is shown, via several experiments, that the proposed contributions embedded into a strict mathematical toolkit can significantly improve the results in real world 2D/3D test images and videos, for applications in video surveillance, smart city monitoring, autonomous driving, remote sensing, and optical industrial inspection.

Book excerpt: Image analysis is one of the most challenging areas in today's computer sci ence, and image technologies are used in a host of applications. This book concentrates on image textures and presents novel techniques for their sim ulation, retrieval, and segmentation using specific Gibbs random fields with multiple pairwise interaction between signals as probabilistic image models. These models and techniques were developed mainly during the previous five years (in relation to April 1999 when these words were written). While scanning these pages you may notice that, in spite of long equa tions, the mathematical background is extremely simple. I have tried to avoid complex abstract constructions and give explicit physical (to be spe cific, "image-based") explanations to all the mathematical notions involved. Therefore it is hoped that the book can be easily read both by professionals and graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering who take an interest in image analysis and synthesis. Perhaps, mathematicians studying applications of random fields may find here some less traditional, and thus controversial, views and techniques.

Book excerpt: Knowledge of the three-dimensional world is essential for many guidance and navigation applications. A sequence of images from an electro-optical sensor can be processed using optical flow algorithms to provide a sparse set of ranges as a function of azimuth and elevation. A natural way to enhance the range map is by interpolation. However, this should be undertaken with care since interpolation assumes continuity of range. The range is continuous in certain parts of the image and can jump at object boundaries. In such situations, the ability to detect homogeneous object regions by scene segmentation can be used to determine regions in the range map that can be enhanced by interpolation. The use of scalar features derived from the spatial gray-level dependence matrix for texture segmentation is explored. Thresholding of histograms of scalar texture features is done for several images to select scalar features which result in a meaningful segmentation of the images. Next, the selected scalar features are used with a neural net to automate the segmentation procedure. Back-propagation is used to train the feed forward neural network. The generalization of the network approach to subsequent images in the sequence is examined. It is shown that the use of multiple scalar features as input to the neural network result in a superior segmentation when compared with a single scalar feature. It is also shown that the scalar features, which are not useful individually, result in a good segmentation when used together. The methodology is applied to both indoor and outdoor images.
