Book excerpt: A Gospel-Rich, Reproducible Model for Making Disciples as Jesus Intended Biblical discipleship emphasizes encouragement, repentance, and spiritual growth—essential parts of the Christian life. However, well-meaning believers often struggle to follow Jesus, unaware their views are too legalistic, licentious, or individualistic. How can churches and Christians develop a healthy, successful path to disciple-making? In this second edition of Gospel-Centered Discipleship, Jonathan Dodson presents an effective, Spirit-led model for sanctification. Reminding readers that real discipleship is imperfect yet transformational, Dodson encourages Christians to engage more authentically with others as they grow in faith. Drawing from his own failures and successes while following Jesus, Dodson defines discipleship, describes the heart of a disciple, and gives practical guidance for mentor and peer-based discipleship as Jesus intended. Revised and Expanded: Includes three new chapters and new illustrations Applicable: Shows how discipleship can be practical and gospel-centered Theological: Addresses the Holy Spirit's involvement in discipleship Foreword by Matt Chandler: Author of The Explicit Gospel

Book excerpt: Can Anyone See In The Spirit? "Seeing in the Spirit Made Simple" provides clear, simple, biblical instruction that will help you see into the invisible world of the spirit. It is the second book in The Kingdom of God Made Simple series; a self-study course designed to train believers how to live out the fullness of the life offered to us as heirs of God's kingdom. The predominant view in the church today holds that seeing in the spirit is a rare gift given to only a few special people, or an anointing we must seek. With the same straightforward, down-to-earth style used in "Divine Healing Made Simple," the author holds this view up to the light of scripture, and suggests that it has no biblical basis. Rather than being a gift given by God to only a few people, seeing in the spirit is an innate ability we all possess, which lies undeveloped in most of us. Through prayer, training and exercise, this ability can be awakened and used by virtually anyone. The author provides Bible-based teaching along with dozens of testimonies and illustrations. There are also practical exercises at the end of the chapters to help develop your ability to see in the spirit. Praying Medic and his wife have only recently learned how to see in the spirit. Come along as they re-trace the path they've taken that has led them to see angels, demons and the heavenly realms. Whether you're a seasoned seer or a newbie, you'll learn from the experiences and insights they share. Not only will you develop better spiritual eyesight, but your relationship with God will grow too. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeing through the Eyes of the Spirit is a Bible-based practical approach to the place of dreams, visions, and revelations in the lives of those who are believers in Christ Jesus. It is obvious that some, even among Christians, have problems believing in dreams and revelations as a critical component of spirituality in the times we now live. However, a close and a thorough examination of the Bible in general and the book of Acts provides the evidence that what God did in the past does happen in our time because God has not changed. Moreover, further evidence in the book of Hebrews notes, Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In other words, those who are believers in Christ do experience seeing through visions and receiving revelations from God. Regardless of the skepticism of the modern and postmodern worldview, God moves in supernatural ways to accomplish his plans on earth. Furthermore, everyone who has read Acts and the entire New Testament will also come to the conclusion that the ability to see through dreams and visions did not end with the apostles of the Lamb or the early church fathers. Rather, visions and revelations are a commonplace phenomenon for anyone in any age who has had a genuine encounter with the living Christ. Without a doubt, there are those who claim to have visions and who have made such claims when their experiences have not been proven to be biblically based or an authentic, divine experience from God. However, just because such people misrepresent the gospel does not negate the fact those with visions and revelations in this time truly had such encounters from God. Seeing through the Eyes of the Spirit is a signature of my own experiences in many years of the ministry. I trust that the testimony and the teachings from the holy scriptures in this book will inspire future Christian leaders to be more prepared for supernatural encounters from the Lord.

Book excerpt: Why is God's beauty often absent from our theology? Rarely do theologians take up the theme of God's beauty—even more rarely do they consider how God's beauty should shape the task of theology itself. But the psalmist says that the heart of the believer's desire is to behold the beauty of the Lord. In The Beauty of the Lord, Jonathan King restores aesthetics as not merely a valid lens for theological reflection, but an essential one. Jesus, our incarnate Redeemer, displays the Triune God's beauty in his actions and person, from creation to final consummation. How can and should theology better reflect this unveiled beauty? The Beauty of the Lord is a renewal of a truly aesthetic theology and a properly theological aesthetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Now my eyes have seen you." (Job 42:5) Few biblical texts are more daunting, and yet more fascinating, than the book of Job—and few have been the subject of such diverse interpretation. For Robert Fyall, the mystery of God's ways and the appalling evil and suffering in the world are at the heart of Job's significant contribution to the canon of Scripture. This New Studies in Biblical Theology volume offers a holistic reading of Job, with particular reference to its depiction of creation and evil, and finds significant clues to its meaning in the striking imagery it uses. Fyall takes seriously the literary and artistic integrity of the book of Job, as well as its theological profundity. He concludes that it is not so much about suffering per se as about creation, providence and knowing God, and how—n the crucible of suffering—these are to be understood. He encourages us to listen to this remarkable literature, to be moved by it, and to see its progress from shrieking protest to repentence and vision. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

Book excerpt: A fallen world is full of reasons to lose heart. From the large-scale tragedies of war, famine, and natural disasters, to the more personal tragedies of broken relationships and broken dreams, it can be difficult to avoid discouragement--even for the believer. And yet, Scripture calls us to a life of hope, based not on wishful thinking or avoiding our problems but based on who God is, what he has done, and what he is still doing. In this short, giftable book, pastor Jason Meyer shows you that though the reasons for discouragement seem strong, the reasons we have to take heart and hold on to hope are stronger yet. Through biblical truth and personal stories, Meyer encourages the weary and anxious believer by shining light on the nature of reality, the nature of God, and the intersection of the two in our daily, rubber-meets-the-road lives. The result is a book that lifts our spirits in a world that too often seeks to drag us down.

Book excerpt: They knew us before we began to walk upright. Shamans called them guardians, mythmakers called them tricksters, pagans called them gods, churchmen called them demons, folklorists called them shape-shifters. They’ve obligingly taken any role we’ve assigned them, and, while needing nothing from us, have accepted whatever we thought was their due – love, hate, fear, worship, condemnation, neglect, oblivion. Even in modern times, when their existence is doubted or denied, they continue to extend invitations to those who would travel a different road, a road not found on any of our cultural maps. But now, perceiving us as a threat to life itself, they issue their invitations with a dark purpose of their own. In this dazzling metaphysical thriller, four who put themselves in the hands of these all-but-forgotten Others venture across a sinister American landscape hidden from normal view, finding their way to interlocking destinies of death, terror, transcendental rapture, and shattering enlightenment.
