Book excerpt: The Two Seeds is an exposition of Genesis 3. “And Hashem Elohim said to the Woman [Eve], ‘What is this you have done?’ And the Woman said, ‘The Serpent [the Nachash] beguiled [cheated, outwitted, and deceived] me, and I ate.’ And Hashem Elohim said to the Serpent, ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed above all [domestic] animals and above every [wild] living thing of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust [and what it contains] all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the Woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel’” (Gen. 3:13ff). After the Fall of Man (Adam), the war in heaven led by the archangel Michael against the dragon, thence, the ancient serpent Satan, would continue on the earth. “And the huge Dragon was cast down and out—that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, he who is the seducer [deceiver] of all Humanity the World over; he was forced out and down to the Earth, and his angels were flung out along with him” (Rev. 12:1ff, 19:1ff; Isa. 14:1ff; Ezek. 28:1ff; Luke 10:1ff; John 16:7ff; among others). The war between the two seeds would be a war of the spirit beings fought through human beings and other living things to the detriment of those who make the wrong choices during the battles to save the world of man! How did it begin, and how will it end? Prophet Daniel (12:8) wanted to know more and wrote, “And I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said: O my Lord, what shall be the issue and final end of these things?” This is the one question every believer is dying to know, literally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art historian Éva Forgács's book is an unusual take on the Bauhaus. She examines the school as shaped by the great forces of history as well as the personal dynamism of its faculty and students. The book focuses on the idea of the Bauhaus - the notion that the artist should be involved in the technological innovations of mechanization and mass production - rather than on its artefacts. Founded in 1919 by the architect Walter Gropius and closed down by the Nazis in 1933, the Bauhaus had to struggle through the years of Weimar Germany not only with its political foes but also with the often-diverging personal ambitions and concepts within its own ranks. It is the inner conflicts and their solutions, the continuous modification of the original Bauhaus idea by politics within and without, that make the history of the school and Forgács's account of it dramatic.

Until recently, this image of the country as an heroic exception has prevailed—despite the murder of almost all Jews living in Bulgarian-occupied territories. Nadège Ragaru presents a riveting archival investigation of the origins and perpetuation of Bulgaria's heroic narrative, restoring Jewish voices to the story. Book excerpt: The authors of this book have developed a new and stimulating approach to the analysis of the transitions of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia to democracy and a market economy. They integrate interdisciplinary theoretical work with elaborate empirical data on some of the most challenging events of the twentieth century. Three groups of phenomena and their causal interconnection are explored: the material legacies, constraints, habits and cognitive frameworks inherited from the past; the erratic configuration of new actors, and new spaces for action; and a new institutional order under which agency is institutionalized and the sustainability of institutions is achieved. The book studies the interrelations of national identities, economic interests, and political institutions with the transformation process, concentrating on issues of constitution making, democratic infrastructure, the market economy, and social policy.

Book excerpt: In 1989, Soviet control over Eastern Europe ended when the communist regimes of the Warsaw Pact collapsed. These momentous and largely bloodless events set the stage for the end of the Cold War and ushered in a new era in international politics. Why did communism collapse relatively peacefully in Eastern Europe? Why did these changes occur in 1989, after more than four decades of communist rule? Why did this upheaval happen almost simultaneously in most of the Warsaw Pact? In Comrades No More, Renee de Nevers examines how internal and external factors interacted in the collapse of East European communism. She argues that Gorbachev's reforms in the Soviet Union were necessary to start the process of political change in Eastern Europe, but domestic factors in each communist state determined when and how each country abandoned communism. A "demonstration effect" emerged as Hungary and Poland introduced reforms and showed that Moscow would not intervene to prevent political and economic changes.De Nevers analyzes the process of change in Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, the German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia, and Romania. She traces the pattern of reform in each country and shows how these patterns influenced their postcommunist political evolution.
