Book excerpt: The influence of several fertilizer elements on the occurrence of underdeveloped seeds in monogerm sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L.) was studied. Lime (CaCO3), nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer applications were made to sugar beet seed plots at two locations in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Seed produced from each treatment was examined by radiography to determine the percentage of fruits containing underdeveloped seeds. Underdeveloped seeds include those which are completely absent from the fruit locule and those which are only partially developed. High nitrogen fertilization negatively influenced seed development, causing an increase in the occurrence of underdeveloped seeds. A larger difference in underdeveloped seeds was noted, however, between the two experimental locations. Lime, phosphorus and potassium applications had no apparent influence on seed development. Experimental locations and nitrogen fertilizer levels influenced the concentrations of several nutrient elements in the sugar beet petioles. But no association was apparent between plant nutritional status and the occurrence of underdeveloped seeds. It was concluded that inadequate or imbalanced fertilizer applications were not the primary factors impeding sugar beet seed development. Although excess nitrogen fertilization was detrimental to seed development, it accounted for only a fraction of the total underdeveloped seeds obtained.

Book excerpt: Maturation rates of monogerm sugar beet seed grown in Western Oregon were measured quantitatively to determine attainment of maximum seed development and germination. Seed was collected at various intervals after anthesis from two hybrid varieties representing the extremes in resistance (hard bolting) and susceptibility (easy bolting) to seedstalk development. The effects of harvesting procedures on seed development and germination were compared at the various stages of maturity using simulated direct and windrow methods. Maturity as determined by maximum germination and dry seed weight occurred at 40, 43 and 45 days after anthesis for the three years studied. Heat units accumulated from anthesis to maturity remained constant for all three years, even though 1965 was much warmer. It was concluded that the seed on sugar beet plants should be mature after 900 heat units are attained or 45 days after peak anthesis. The primary factor lowering the germination potential of mature seed was the occurrence of underdeveloped seeds, Chemical inhibitors in the sugar beet fruits as measured by firm ungerminated seeds may also reduce the germination for seed collected prior to maturity. Some seeds were capable of germination 20 days after anthesis. Plants and seeds of the hard bolting variety remained green throughout the maturation period, whereas easy bolting plants reached senesence and shattered. Plant appearance and percent moisture content were not found to be reliable indicators of sugar beet seed maturity. Maximum germination and dry seed weight were attained at nearly the same levels regardless of harvesting method used. Sugar beets cut prematurely continued seed development while drying on the windrowed plant, but also contained more substances inhibitory to germination. It was determined that germination, dry seed weight, heat unit accumulation and days from anthesis to maturity could all be used to estimate the optimum stage to harvest sugar beets for seed.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to investigate the low seed germination of 12 varieties of Oregon grown monogerm sugar beet, Beta vulgaris L., using several methods to determine the germination potential. The methods were: (1) X-ray radiograph examination, (2) standard laboratory germination following official rules, (3) laboratory germination by hydrogen peroxide method, and (4) field emergence. The X-ray technique was effective and accurate for determining the number of undeveloped seeds in the varieties examined. The use of this technique for determining germination potential is questionable at this time, since the abnormalities present in the seedballs could not be detected from the radiograph. The speed of germination, as well as total germination, was higher for the hydrogen peroxide method than the standard method. There was less difference between the two methods for those varieties having decorticated seed. The results of the hydrogen peroxide method compared more favorably with the field emergence results than did the standard method. The primary factors contributing to low laboratory germination were: (1) undeveloped seeds, (2) abnormal seedlings, and (3) firm ungerminated seeds. The undeveloped seed class included the completely empty seedball cavities and those seedballs having shrunken seeds. The abnormal seedlings were caused primarily by seed-borne pathogens and were most frequent in those varieties having natural seedballs. Abnormalities were higher when using the standard method than with the hydrogen peroxide method. The role of inhibitors, as determined by the number of firm ungerminated seeds, was minor for all the varieties except one. It was determined that of the three laboratory methods investigated, no single method would give an accurate estimate of the total germination potential of a variety. Therefore, either the X-ray technique or cutting should supplement one of the regular laboratory germination methods to gain additional information on the seedlot's potential.

Book excerpt: This book, now in its second edition, provides researchers and operators a complete description of all aspects regarding the wild ancestor of sugar beet. The possibility of crossing modern crops with the ancestors from which they are derived in order to recover some traits lost through domestication is increasingly attracting interest. The selective process implemented by the first growers led to the elimination of features not considered useful at the time. Yet some of these lost traits have now become very important. In fact, in many areas sugar beet cultivation would now be impossible without the transfer of some genetic resistances from Beta maritima, the crop’s ancestor. Moreover, the isolation of such traits is becoming increasingly critical with regard to current and future environmental and economic considerations on e.g. the use of pesticides. This second edition replaces certain photographs and has been updated to reflect the latest advances and findings. One chapter and several sections have been rewritten, and significant revisions have been made throughout the text. The new techniques provide breeders with massively improved analytical means for the safest and fastest selection procedures. Not only will these techniques allow Beta maritima to take on a far greater role as a source of favorable traits; the relative ease with which these characteristics can be transferred will also make it possible to use the germplasm of the whole genus Beta and Patellifolia, which to date has been highly complex, if not impossible, due to the difficulties of hybridization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-quality seed is essential for healthy crops and greater agricultural productivity. At the same time, advances in breeding technology require equivalent advances in seed technology. In order to ensure food security, it is crucial to develop seeds that are high yielding, and resistant to drought, heat, cold, and insects. Gathering the latest research in seed sciences, the book includes contributions on seed production in crops such as legumes, sugar, rice, wheat and other cereals. It discusses a range of topics, like the effect of climate change on seed quality, production and storage; seed rouging; seed certification for different crop species; seed biology; and seed pathologies and their effective management. Integrating basic and applied research, this compendium provides valuable insights for researchers and students in agricultural and life sciences; professionals involved in seed certification and those working in quarantine laboratories; as well as plant pathologists.

Book excerpt: Along the undisturbed shores, especially of the Mediterranean Sea and the European North Atlantic Ocean, is a quite widespread plant called Beta maritima by botanists, or more commonly sea beet. Nothing, for the inexperienced observer's eye, distinguishes it from surrounding wild vegetation. Despite its inconspicuous and nearly invisible flowers, the plant has had and will have invaluable economic and scientific importance. Indeed, according to Linnè, it is considered "the progenitor of the beet crops possibly born from Beta maritima in some foreign country". Recent molecular research confirmed this lineage. Selection applied after domestication has created many cultivated types with different destinations. The wild plant always has been harvested and used both for food and as a medicinal herb. Sea beet crosses easily with the cultivated types. This facilitates the transmission of genetic traits lost during domestication, which selection processes aimed only at features immediately useful to farmers and consumers may have depleted. Indeed, as with several crop wild relatives, Beta maritima has been successfully used to improve cultivated beet’s genetic resistances against many diseases and pests. In fact, sugar beet cultivation currently would be impossible in many countries without the recovery of traits preserved in the wild germplasm. Dr. Enrico Biancardi graduated from Bologna University. From 1977 until 2009, he was involved in sugar beet breeding activity by the Istituto Sperimentale per le Colture Industriali (ISCI) formerly Stazione Sperimentale di Bieticoltura (Rovigo, Italy), where he released rhizomania and cercospora resistant germplasm and collected seeds of Mediterranean sea beet populations as a genetic resource for breeding and ex situ conservation. Retired since 2009, he still collaborates with several working breeders, in particular, at the USDA Agricultural Research Stations, at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS), and at the Athens University (AUA). He has edited books, books chapters and authored more than 150 papers. Dr. Lee Panella is a plant breeder and geneticist with the USDA-ARS at Fort Collins, Colorado. He earned his B.S. in Crop and Soil Science from Michigan State University, an M.S. in Plant Breeding from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California at Davis. His research focus is developing disease resistant germplasm using sugar beet wild relatives. He is chairman of the USDA-ARS Sugar Beet Crop Germplasm Committee and has collected and worked extensively with sea beet. Dr. Robert T. Lewellen was raised on a ranch in Eastern Oregon and obtained a B.S. in Crop Science from Oregon State University followed by a Ph.D. from Montana State University in Genetics. From 1966 to 2008 he was a research geneticist for the USDA-ARS at Salinas, California, where he studied the genetics of sugar beet and as a plant breeder, often used sea beet as a genetic source to produce many pest and disease resistant sugar beet germplasm and parental lines, while authoring more than 100 publications.
