Book excerpt: Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and nutrients releases from the bottom sediments of a water body are important parameters to be included in studies of water quality processes. Two methods to measure SOD, in situ and at laboratory, were applied at Eckie’s Pond on late spring of 2015. Based upon preliminary results, which showed greater values for the in situ method, some modifications of procedures and equipment were made to improve the measurements. Another set of measurements were made on June of 2016, however their results were not conclusive to establish a correlation between these methodologies. As a result of this research, three standard operating procedures (SOP) have been established to measure SOD at shallow waters, first in situ, second at laboratory, and a third SOP to analyze nutrients and metals by using a spectrophotometer.

Detailed knowledge of the diagenetic textures, fabrics, and minerals, and a prediction of the regional diagenetic response, partly controls hydrocarbon recovery programmes. In other words, knowledge of the diagenesis can aid (or even control) conservation policy. Similarly, facies and diagenetic trends w.ithin basins can influence exploration policy. This volume incorporates the majority of the principal contributions given to the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in the University of Reading, U.K., from July 12th-25th, 1981, at which the major themes of carbonate and terrigenous clastic sediments were treated sequentially from deposition to deep burial. Eighty selected scientists from twelve NATO and three other countries participated in the Institute. The keynote addresses which acted as the touchstones for discussion are presented here in the expectation that they will stimulate a still wider audience. Book excerpt: The transfer of solutes across the sediment-water interface is an important factor in describing a marine or freshwater system. Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and nutrient fluxes have received a great deal of attention in the last several years as the increase in pollutants has become a major problem. Most of the chemical reactions taking place in the sediments are associated with the decomposition of organic matter by microbes, as well as CaCO3 and SiO2-nH2O (Berner 1976). The reaction rate is highly dependent on the microbial activity of the sediment and, therefore, also dependent on temperature. The order and extent of the oxidation-reduction reactions are dependent on the concentrations of the reactants and the free energy available. The geochemical reaction in the sediments affects the pH and oxidation-reduction potential and can deplete or increase the reactants or products in both the fluid and solid phases of a deposit (e.g. Ben-Yaakov 1973; Goldhaber and Kaplan 1974).

Book excerpt: The Arboretum Waterway, located on the University of California, Davis campus, suffers from poor water quality. The stagnation and high nutrient loading of the water body results in low dissolved oxygen concentrations and uncontrollable eutrophication. Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD) contributes to about half of the Total Oxygen Demand (TOD) of the Waterway. In this study, sediment was collected from four separate locations along the Arboretum Waterway and tested for SOD. The sediment was collected and incubated in BOD bottles. The dissolved oxygen concentration was measured before and after incubation. The gradual increase in oxygen depletion was monitored and the SOD was calculated and graphed. The SOD in the Arboretum Waterway can be attributed to the large concentrations of organics in the sediment due to stormwater runoff and decaying debris. These organics demand large concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The Waterway is a stagnant body, which does not allow mixing, which results in low dissolved oxygen concentrations, even without the SOD.
