With his newly minted detective badge, “Mac” McAllister reports for his first assignment with the Oregon State Police: a particularly gruesome homicide. It’s a headline case, as the victim—Megan Tyson—was brutally murdered mere weeks before her wedding. The investigation turns up far too many suspects and too little hard evidence. Why would the beautiful Megan, engaged to a wealthy businessman, be involved with the likes of long line-up of questionable characters that seem connected to her in more ways than one? With more questions than answers, Mac tries to uncover the secrets Megan took to her grave. While the autopsy answers how Megan was killed, it doesn’t reveal a killer or a motive. Can Mac and his partner sort through the lies and alibis before Megan’s murderer strikes again? Not sure that he can trust his instincts, Mac depends heavily on the advice of his partner—a seasoned detective with a strong faith in God. A faith Mac has no use for until he must come to terms with his own past and the secrets that haunt him. Full-length Christian suspense novel Book #1 of the McAllister Files, but can be read as a stand-alone

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, DNA exoneration cases have shed light on the issue of false confessions. Research has demonstrated that a confession is a highly influential piece of evidence and can bias expert and lay witnesses alike, though little research has involved alibi witnesses. Alibi witnesses who share a relationship with an individual are perceived as less credible than strangers, although there has been little empirical research to support the idea that the former are less reliable. The present study aimed to determine the effects of false confession evidence, as well as rapport between a suspect and an alibi witness, on alibi corroboration evidence. Using a mock crime scenario, student and confederate pairs were asked to complete short sets of problem solving questions. The confederate was later accused of stealing money from an adjacent office and provided a true alibi that she was present in the testing room during the time of the theft. Results showed that only 50% of students maintained their initial alibi corroboration when they were informed the confederate had confessed, compared to 91% of students who were informed the confederated denied. In contrast, our manipulation of rapport did not have any effect on alibi corroboration. A confession also decreased participants' confidence in the accuracy of the alibi and increased their belief that the confederate was guilty. These findings demonstrate that a confession can sway alibi witnesses' decisions to maintain corroboration, and that they should not be given specific case details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shocking in its disclosures, elegantly crafted, and faultlessly measured in its judgments."-Roger Morris, author of Richard Milhous Nixon and Partners in Power How did the deeply flawed George W. Bush ascend to the highest office in the nation, what forces abetted his rise, and-perhaps most important-were those forces really vanquished by Obama's election? Award-winning investigative journalist Russ Baker gives us the answers in Family of Secrets, a compelling and startling new take on the Bush dynasty and the shadowy elite that has quietly steered the American republic for the past half century and more. Baker shows how this network of figures in intelligence, the military, oil, and finance enabled-and in turn benefited handsomely from-the Bushes' perch at the highest levels of government. As Baker reveals, this deeply entrenched elite remains in power regardless of who sits in the Oval Office. Family of Secrets offers countless disclosures that challenge the conventional accounts of such central events as the JFK assassination and Watergate. It includes an inside account of George W.'s cynical religious conversion and the untold real background to the disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina. Baker's narrative is gripping, sobering, and deeply sourced. It will change the way we understand not just the Bush years, but a half century of postwar history-and the present.
