Book excerpt: The Lunex Project was a US Air Force 1958 plan for a manned lunar landing prior to the Apollo Program. The final lunar expedition plan in 1961 was for a 21-airman underground Air Force base on the Moon by 1968 at a total cost of $7.5 billion. The primary distinction between the later Apollo missions and Lunex was the orbital rendezvous maneuver. The Lunex vehicle, composed of a landing module and a lifting body return/re-entry module, would land the entire vehicle and all astronauts on the surface, whereas the final Apollo mission involved a separate ascent module leaving the command module and service module connected in lunar orbit with a single astronaut. The original plan for Apollo was for direct ascent, similar to Lunex.

On June 8, 1959, a group at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) produced for the U.S. Department of the Army a report entitled Project Horizon, A U.S. Army Study for the Establishment of a Lunar Military Outpost. The project proposal states the requirements as: ""The lunar outpost is required to develop and protect potential United States interests on the moon; to develop techniques in moon-based surveillance of the earth and space, in communications relay, and in operations on the surface of the moon; to serve as a base for exploration of the moon, for further exploration into space and for military operations on the moon if required; and to support scientific investigations on the moon. The permanent outpost was predicted to cost $6 billion and become operational in December 1966 with twelve soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Childress, popular author and star of the History Channel show Ancient Aliens, brings us the incredible tale of Nazi submarines and secret weapons in Antarctica and elsewhere. He looks into the strange life and death of Rudolf Hess, as well as the mystery of James Forrestal and the secret group called MJ-12. He examines Operation Highjump led by Admiral Richard Byrd in 1947 and the battle that he apparently had in Antarctica with flying saucers. Through “Operation Paperclip,” the Nazis infiltrated aerospace companies, banking, media, and the US government, including NASA and the CIA after WWII. He reveals that the Nazis had built secret bases in a variety of places during WWII, including Greenland, the Canary Islands, Tibet and Antarctica. Childress discusses the secret U-boat fleet that patrolled the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans for decades after the war. He looks into the secret German space program and its flying disks and tubular aircraft; the secret technology involved, including anti-gravity propulsion technology; underground and under ice bases; strange things happening in South America; and secret bases on the Moon and Mars. Childress looks at the possible merger of Nazi assets in Antarctic with the Americans’ and the use of Antarctica as a space base for traffic to secret space stations in orbit and below the surface of the Moon. The author looks at military space programs such as Solar Warden, Lunex and Project Horizon. Does the US Space Force have a secret space program that maintains huge ships in orbit around the Earth and employs hundreds of astronauts as crew for these vehicles? Includes a 16-page color section.

Book excerpt: Space expert Bara delves into the secret space program, examining the possibility that there are secret bases on the Moon, and exploring the many other rumors surrounding the military’s secret projects in space. Starting with the mysterious airship flap of 1897, tracing its possible origin to a 19th century Prussian secret society, Bara posits that man has had anti-gravity technology for quite a long time. What else doesn’t the public know? Bara brings to light a lot of evidence showing that there is plenty. • On June 8, 1959, a group at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency produced for the U.S. Army a report entitled Project Horizon, a “Study for the Establishment of a Lunar Military Outpost.” The permanent outpost was predicted to cost $6 billion and was to become operational in December 1966 with twelve soldiers stationed at the Moon base. Did this happen? • The Brookings Report drawn up at the inception of NASA said we could expect to find alien artifacts in our exploration of space. Did NASA and the Pentagon find evidence of alien bases on the Moon? Did the Apollo 12 astronauts deliberately damage the mission’s TV cameras in order to hide their explorations of one of these bases? • Does hacker Gary Mackinnon’s discovery of defense department documents identifying “non-terrestrial officers” serving in space mean that the U.S. has clandestine space platforms designed to fight a war with an alien race? And, have civilian observers here on Earth photographed these secret military space platforms? Bara explores the evidence surrounding these questions and more in this explosive book. He maintains that aside from the actual secret space program, even the public space program—NASA—has at its core a secret agenda. Bara also examines the many allegations that the government has long been clandestinely working with aliens in various covert programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past five decades have witnessed often fierce international rivalry in space, but also surprising military restraint. Now, with an increasing number of countries capable of harming U.S. space assets, experts and officials have renewed a long-standing debate over the best route to space security. Some argue that space defenses will be needed to protect critical military and civilian satellites. Others argue that space should be a "sanctuary" from deployed weapons and military conflict, particularly given the worsening threat posed by orbital space debris. Moltz puts this debate into historical context by explaining the main trends in military space developments since Sputnik, their underlying causes, and the factors that are likely to influence their future course. This new edition provides analysis of the Obama administration's space policy and the rise of new actors, including China, India, and Iran. His conclusion offers a unique perspective on the mutual risks militaries face in space and the need for all countries to commit to interdependent, environmentally focused space security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when no other country enjoys the advantages that the United States currently reaps from space, some U.S. officials argue that U.S. space defenses will be needed to protect access to critical military and civilian assets in orbit. Others argue that space should be a valuable "sanctuary" from deployed weapons and military conflict. To inform this debate—and develop meaningful guidelines for the future—Clay Moltz has undertaken the only comprehensive study of the first 50 years of space security, highlighting the main trends in military space developments, their underlying causes, and the factors that are likely to influence their future course. What emerges is a picture of surprising military restraint shown by the United States and the Soviet Union in space, and the inescapable conclusion that the only way forward is through a multilateral commitment to interdependent, environmentally focused space security.

He covers the unmanned programmes, e.g. Ranger, and other American probes in the late ‘50s and in the later chapters he looks at recent lunar exploration and future plans for the same. It’s a book that will be perfect for an enthusiast or someone coming to the story for the first time, as it does not include excessive technical depth. Uniquely drawing on recently declassified documents, detail of Chinese lunar exploration projects is provided, as well as nuclear lunar weapons of the ‘50s developed by the super powers, Soviet Russia and the United States.
