Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dudley Genealogies The Work, Here presented, is intended as an introduction to a large biographical account of the Dudley family, which I have long been collecting, and design to publish on my return from Europe, whither, I am about to proceed for the purpose of extending my researches further, than is practicable in this country. It seemed expedient to publish this collection thus early, in order, that an opportunity might be offered for the correction of unavoidable errors and the addition of such records, as might be found wanting in the genealogies. And, therefore, it is earnestly desired, that those, possessing additional records or corrections of errors, will forward them to me, as soon as possible; and all appropriate biographical sketches will, also, be received with much gratitude. I am not unmindful of past favors, but tender my warmest thanks to those, who have, already, lent their assistance in this arduous undertaking. It will be seen that some of the genealogical accounts, given in this volume, are more extensive and much nearer complete than others. This difference is owing entirely to the facilities, that have been afforded for obtaining the necessary facts; and not to any preference of my own, and, hereafter, I hope to be able to make the whole complete and perfect. I am particularly desirous of ascertaining the precise relationship between the different branches of the Dudley family in this country; and I trust the necessary evidence will yet appear to prove them all of one great family, descended from a common ancester by the name of Sutton of Dudley castle.
