Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress Report on the Strength of Structural Timber For ooring, molding, paneling, and all inside finish western hem lock makes a superior lumber, not easily scratched, susceptible of a high polish, and of excellent wearing qualities. The results of the mechanical tests, although the data are not as yet sufficiently numerous for positive conclusions, indicate a quality of timber averaging about 70 per cent of the strength of red fir of the same grade, and suitable for all except the heaviest structures. The tests of western hemlock recorded below were made upon tim bers cut on the west. Slope of the Cascade Mountains, in Lane County, Oreg., and tested from two to six months after sawing. The sticks were stored in a shed and sprinkled from time to time. It is difficult to apply to the western hemlock the grading rules adopted for red fir. Their application throws most of the hemlock sticks into the seconds grade. New rules should be made for western hemlock to bring the better quality of sticks into the merchantable grade. The average of the results shown in Table I gives a modulus of rupture of pounds per square inch, a modulus of elasticity of pounds per square inch, and a dry weight per cubic foot of pounds.
