Book Synopsis Geometric Crystallography by : P. Engel
Download or read book Geometric Crystallography written by P. Engel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade mathematical crystallography has found increasing interest. Siginificant results have been obtained by algebraic, geometric, and group theoretic methods. Also classical crystallography in three-dimen sional Euclidean space has been extended to higher dimen sions in order to understand better the dimension independent crystallographic properties. The aim of this note is to introduce the reader to the fascinating and rich world of geometric crystallography. The prerequisites for reading it are elementary geometry and topological notations, and basic knowledge of group theory and linear algebra. Crystallography is geometric by its nature. In many cases, geometric arguments are the most appropriate and can thus best be understood. Thus the geometric point of view is emphasized here. The approach is axiomatic start ing from discrete point sets in Euclidean space. Symmetry comes in very soon and plays a central role. Each chapter starts with the necessary definitions and then the subject is treated in two- and three-dimensional space. Subsequent sections give an extension to higher dimensions. Short historical remarks added at the end of the chapters will show the development of the theory. The chapters are main ly self-contained. Frequent cross references, as well as an extended subject index, will help the reader who is only interested in a particular subject.

Download or read book Dirichlet written by Uta C. Merzbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first extensive biography of the influential German mathematician, Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805 – 1859). Dirichlet made major contributions to number theory in addition to clarifying concepts such as the representation of functions as series, the theory of convergence, and potential theory. His mathematical methodology was explicitly based on a thorough knowledge of the work of his predecessors and his belief in the underlying unity of the branches of mathematics. This unified approach is exemplified in a paper that effectively launched the field of analytic number theory. The same orientation pervaded his teaching, which had a profound influence on the work of many mathematicians of subsequent generations. Chapters dealing with his mathematical work alternate with biographical chapters that place Dirichlet’s life and those of some of his notable associates in the context of the political, social, and artistic culture of the period. This book will appeal not only to mathematicians but also to historians of mathematics and sciences, and readers interested in the cultural and intellectual history of the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Fivefold Symmetry by : Istv n Hargittai
Download or read book Fivefold Symmetry written by Istv n Hargittai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fivefold symmetry is common in flowers, fruits, molecules, logos, and buildings, but it is a forbidden symmetry in the world of crystals. A few years ago, the so-called quasicrystals were discovered displaying fivefold symmetry, and it caused a minirevolution in crystallography. There has been increased awareness of fivefold symmetry in all domains of human interest ever since. The present book brings together authors and ideas on a common theme from mathematics, the sciences, design, and anthropology to history, literature, and the arts. Its 29 chapters are an offering by scientists and humanists from 13 countries to a broad readership of professionals and laypersons about fivefold symmetry and the areas that are being bridged by this unique concept.
Book Synopsis Game Theory and Its Applications by : William F. Lucas
Download or read book Game Theory and Its Applications written by William F. Lucas and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1981 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The media today, and especially the national press, are frequently in conflict with people in the public eye, particularly politicians and celebrities, over the disclosure of private information and behaviour. Historically, journalists have argued that 'naming and shaming' serious wrong-doing and behaviour on the part of public officials is justified as being in the public interest. However, when the media spotlight is shone on perfectly legal personal behaviour, family issues and sexual orientation, and when, in particular, this involves ordinary people, the question arises of whether such matters are really in the 'public interest' in any meaningful sense of the term. In this book, leading academics, commentators and journalists from a variety of different cultures, consider the extent to which the media are entitled to reveal details of people's private lives, the laws and regulations which govern such revelations, and whether these are still relevant in the age of social media."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis Discrete and Computational Geometry by : Jacob E. Goodman
Download or read book Discrete and Computational Geometry written by Jacob E. Goodman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first DIMACS special year, held during 1989-1990, was devoted to discrete and computational geometry. More than 200 scientists, both long- and short-term visitors, came to DIMACS to participate in the special year activities. Among the highlights were six workshops at Rutgers and Princeton Universities that defined the focus for much of the special year. The workshops addressed the following topics: geometric complexity, probabilistic methods in discrete and computational geometry, polytopes and convex sets, arrangements, and algebraic and practical issues in geometric computation. This volume presents some of the results growing out of the workshops and the special year activities. Containing both survey articles and research papers, this collection presents an excellent overview of significant recent progress in discrete and computational geometry. The diversity of these papers demonstrate how geometry continues to provide a vital source of ideas in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics as well as fertile ground for interaction and simulation between the two disciplines.
