Book excerpt: Medina has long been recognized as the home to wealthy and influential members of Seattle's elite. Industry captains such as Clapp, Blethan, Gates, and Bezos have built estates along Medina's waterfront. Meanwhile, a diverse group of families with a variety of backgrounds have settled the uplands, creating a close-knit community. Farmers, including many of Japanese heritage, first settled the area in the late 1800s. Upon the arrival of the car ferry service to Seattle in 1913, Medina gradually evolved into a commuter suburb for the working class and wealthy alike. In 1940, the first Lake Washington floating bridge ushered in a new era, and with incorporation in 1955 and the opening of the Evergreen Point Bridge in 1963, Medina completed its transformation to a largely residential area. Despite its marvelous growth, Medina has successfully maintained its charm. A new generation of families arrived in the 1990s, filling classrooms and parks, and renewing Medina's original identity: close to the big city, but a world apart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American West conjures up images of pastoral tranquility and wide open spaces, but by 1970 the Far West was the most urbanized section of the country. Exploring four intriguing cityscapes—Disneyland, Stanford Industrial Park, Sun City, and the 1962 Seattle World's Fair—John Findlay shows how each created a sense of cohesion and sustained people's belief in their superior urban environment. This first book-length study of the urban West after 1940 argues that Westerners deliberately tried to build cities that differed radically from their eastern counterparts. In 1954, Walt Disney began building the world's first theme park, using Hollywood's movie-making techniques. The creators of Stanford Industrial Park were more hesitant in their approach to a conceptually organized environment, but by the mid-1960s the Park was the nation's prototypical "research park" and the intellectual downtown for the high-technology region that became Silicon Valley. In 1960, on the outskirts of Phoenix, Del E. Webb built Sun City, the largest, most influential retirement community in the United States. Another innovative cityscape arose from the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and provided a futuristic, somewhat fanciful vision of modern life. These four became "magic lands" that provided an antidote to the apparent chaos of their respective urban milieus. Exemplars of a new lifestyle, they are landmarks on the changing cultural landscape of postwar America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bellevue has grown, in just a few generations, from a small farming town into an important urban center and economic hub, with the foundations for this success being laid in the two decades following World War II. The opening of the Mercer Island floating bridge, in 1940, promoted the settlement of the lands to the east of Lake Washington during the population and housing boom of the 1950s and 1960s, and Bellevue became the primary commercial center for these vibrant new communities. Families flocked to the shiny subdivisions, with new schools, shopping centers, churches, and parks springing up right behind. But it was strong political, business, and civic leadership that kept Bellevue from being just another sprawling suburb. As business began to push outward from Seattle, Bellevue was able to grow gracefully and preserve its sense of place. It remains a wonderful community for families from around the globe and a place that longtime residents are reluctant to leave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic Science Textbook Struggle -- a worldwide battle about the origin of the universe, life, and man -- erupted without warning. It caught the scientific illuminati completely by surprise. Why? Because science textbooks had become filled with wild, unbelievable stories about the beginning of everything. And those tales were simply not scientific! The universe starting with a Big Bang, life arising out of a soup of lifeless amino-acids, humans produced by apes . . . those myths had only replaced ancient Greek mythology and were being passed off as scientific truths! Caught in the crossfire between educators, news media, textbook publishers, religious notables, and world renowned scientists -- including nineteen Nobel laureates -- was a private citizen. Father of six schoolchildren, he had only one goal: to prove that science never will have answers for origins! He was up against the arrogance of scientists who were determined to disguise their private beliefs as being the only explanations for the origin of the universe, life, and man. This story concludes with a great victory for objectivity -- with more than 200 changes being made in textbooks -- over the objections of the National Academy of Sciences. All discussion about origins was transformed -- by admission that stories about them are based solely on personal views of individual scientists. Remarkably, 3,000 scientists around the world later signed an affirmation to assure that this issue of belief-over-fact in science never be repeated. Wernher von Braun, father of Americas space program, writes in the Foreword: Vernon Grose, in tracing out in Science But Not Scientists his personal involvement in the vortex of these two forces, illustrates one more time the humanity of scientists their likelihood of being just as prejudiced and bigoted as anyone untrained in science. He properly calls for objectivity rather than scientific consensus. He rightly urges that message rather than messenger should be scrutinized and tested for validity. Science will be the richer and humanity the ultimate beneficiary by heeding this clarion call.
