This meet ing covered not only fundamental experimental and theoretical spin phenomena but also technological developments in polarized beams and targets. For the first time intermediate energy spin physics with electron machines was discussed extensively. Highlights included the work on polarized high energy electron beams at LEP and TRISTAN and the failure of the standard model in connection with spin phenomena, in particular the growth of the spin asymmetry in violent proton-proton scattering. Also the presentation of different models in con nection with the still-unsolved 'proton spin crisis' and the proposals for four different experiments to determine the spin structure functions caused lively and sometimes controversial discussions. The Organizing Committee would like to thank all speakers for their excel lent talks, the conveners for the organization of the parallel sessions, and the International Advisory Committee for their advice. Four workshops preceded the symposium. 160 participants, among them many young physicists, discussed mainly technological spin problems. These papers are published in separate proceedings. We gratefully acknowledge the enthusiastic help of the members of our institute in preparing and running the conference and the workshops, especially Mrs. D. FaSbender, Mrs. E. Wendorf, Mrs. J. Wetzel, and Dr. U.Idschok.

Similar funds were provided by Argonne Universities Association (AUA) during 1974-1978, by University of Michigan during 1979- 1994 and 1999-2004, and by DOE during 1995-1996. These Symposia and Workshops serve as a focus for the important, but technically difficult, field of High Energy Spin Physics, which requires state-of-the-art spin-polarized beams and spin-polarized targets. The Symposia and Workshops are guided by the standing International Committee for High Energy Spin Physics Symposia, which approves the content and location of the Symposia and Workshops. The Committee's Members are elected to 4-year terms; some of the more active and/or distinguished Members have served a number of terms. The Proceeding of each Symposium or Workshop is published, usually by a publisher near the meeting site.

Book excerpt: Summarizing an international conference in high energy spin physics is never an easy task, because of the wide-ranging subjects in physics and technology that are involved. I have chosen to organize the topics of this conference into three broad categories relating to spin; intrinsic spin; composite spin; and spin, the experimental tool. In the first category, I will briefly revisit some historical and recent developments to set a background. In the second category, composite spin, I will discuss the status and developments in several areas, including magnetic moments of baryons, hyperon polarization in high energy high p (up tack) production, transverse polarization and asymmetries from transversely polarized targets in high p (up tack) scattering, spin structure of the proton, and the Bjorken sum rule. In the third category, I will discuss the steady, and at times rapid, progress in spin technology. In this part I include recent progress in high energy facilities, and comment on the highlights of the Workshops.
