Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspires readers to reclaim their idealism and find their sense of wonder again - - without surrendering their critical faculties Full of witty and compelling real-life stories ''What might happen, '' John Izzo writes, ''if we began to think of innocence as a quality we bring to our lives, a perspective and a way of looking at the world, which is not replaced by experience but which influences our experience? When we choose innocence as a frame to experience the world, the qualities of hope, idealism, openness, and faith nurture the experience of wonder and joy in our lives.'' In the tradition of Robert Fulgham and Richard Carlson, Izzo uses his experiences as a son, husband, father, employee, minister, author and corporate speaker to inspire readers to see the world from this new, rejuvenating perspective. Chapters with titles like Full Speed Ahead In The Wrong Direction, Choose Your Glasses Carefully, Getting Past Your Expiration Date, The Burned-Out Buddha and The Power of Not Now explore how to reclaim our innocence in four realms - - daily life, faith, work, and relationships. ''It is not that experience should not shape our idealism'', Izzo tells us. ''In fact, our initial innocence must be shaped by our experiences. To hold on to our innocence is a life long process and it is our ability to foster the quality of innocence that continues to bring us to the edge of what is possible in our lives and in our communities. That we may choose innocence and idealism while incorporating the harder experiences of living is the core premise of this book.'' Both practical and inspiring, Second Innocence combines wonderful stories with an inspiring philosophy to help us maintain our idealism and enthusiasm throughout our lives

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of therapy and expertise in literature, this book explains the six archetypes derived from 4,000 years of literature and how they may guide unhappy people seeking meaning in their lives. Holding up the great books as the best way to understand these timeless story elements, the discussion devotes a chapter to each of the six archetypes; the innocent, the orphan, the pilgrim, the warrior-lover, the monarch pair, and the magician. Story structures are shown to be particularly suited to therapy with adolescents, many of whom have never stepped away from television and the shopping mall long enough to understand their unmet spiritual needs.

Book excerpt: The first edition of this book added the term ''father hunger'' to everyday language, to explain the emptiness, and resulting food and body-image disorders, experienced by women with physically or emotionally absent fathers. Based on ten years of further study, this Second Edition of Father Hunger details the origins of the syndrome and its effect on the family, with new practical solutions to help dada and daughters understand and improve their relationships. Dr. Maine also introduces the concept of ''Global Girls'' which describes today's adolescents in terms of the globalization of media, corporate marketing, and body image. An expanded section for educators and therapists offers strategies and techniques for preventing impasses in treatment. REVIEWS. . .''The book offers healthy, well-balanced advice to family members and health practitioners. It is a unique book not only for its clinical insights for therapists but also for school counselors and educators as well. '' - Karen H. Jones, Ph.D., The Prevention Researcher ''Fact one; Dads tend to withdraw from girls during adolescence. Fact two; Adolescent girls too often develop unhealthy eating behaviors. Put these two ideas together and you get a fascinating book called Father Hunger.'' - Daughters; A newsletter for parents of girls ages 8-18 ''Dr. Maine does a nice job of integrating psychological and sociological research into her material. An important contribution of work in this area, suitable for community college students and up.'' - Choice ''Practical advice to help readers understand and improve father-daughter relationships, and helps families at multi-generational levels to reconnect. - Betitina Wood, Healthline ''I found the book to be 'carefronting' in relationship to my own married daughter and granddaughter. . . an excellent systemic book for therapists as well. . . it has good theory, is reality based, and has practical suggestions. I enjoyed reading this book.'' - Ralph Earle, Ph.D., past-President, American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy ''this powerful book clearly explains how a father's emotional or physical absence can contribute to a daughter's eating problems, body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem.''

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like its widely praised predecessor False Dawn, Two Faces of Liberalism, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as ''elegant and powerful,'' offers a thoughtful and provocative analysis of the liberal tradition in politics. John Gray, an eminent professor at the London School of Economics, ''picks large and interesting topics and says arresting things about them,'' according to the New York Review of Books. Two Faces of Liberalism argues that, in its beginning, liberalism contained two contradictory philosophies of tolerance. In one, it put forward the enlightenment vision of a universal civilization. In the other, it framed terms for peaceful coexistence between warring communities and between different ways of life. In this major contribution to political theory, Gray's new book ''takes us beyond the current debate''(The New York Times Book Review) of traditional liberalism to keep up with the complex political realities of today's increasingly divided world.

Book excerpt: "In Destiny Disrupted, Ansary tells the rich story of world history as it looks from that other perspective. With the evolution of the Muslim community at the center, his story moves from the lifetime of Mohammed through a succession of far-flung empires, to the struggles and ideological movements that have wracked the Muslim world in recent centuries, to the tangle of modern conflicts that culminated in the events of 9/11. He introduces the key people, events, ideas, legends, religious disputes, and turning points of world history from that other perspective, recounting not only what happened but how those events were interpreted and understood in that framework. He clarifies why these two great civilizations grew up oblivious to each other, what happened when they intersected, and how the Islamic world was affected by its slow recognition that Europe - a place it long perceived as primitive - had somehow hijacked destiny."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Paul Butler was an ambitious federal prosecutor, a Harvard Law grad who gave up his corporate law salary to fight the good fight - until one day he was arrested on the street and charged with a crime he didnt commit. The Volokh Conspiracy calls Butlers account of his trial ''the most riveting first chapter I have ever read. In a book Harvard Law professor Charles Ogletree calls ''a must read, Butler looks at places where ordinary citizens meet the justice system - as jurors, witnesses, and in encounters with the police - and explores what ''doing the right thing means in a corrupt system. Since Lets Get Frees publication, Butler has become the go-to person for commentary on criminal justice and race relations; he appeared on ABC News, Good Morning America, and Fox News, published op-eds in the New York Times, and other national papers, and is in demand to speak across the country. The paperback edition brings Butlers groundbreaking and highly controversial arguments - jury nullification (voting ''not guilty in drug cases as a form of protest), just saying ''no when the police request your permission to search, and refusing to work inside the system as a snitch or a prosecutor - to a whole new audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2008 PASS Award (Prevention for a Safer Society) from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. In 1970, a jury convicted Robert Hillary King of a crime he did not commit and sentenced him to 35 years in prison. He became a member of the Black Panther Party while in Angola State Penitentiary, successfully organizing prisoners to improve conditions. In return, prison authorities beat him, starved him, and gave him life without parole after framing him for a second crime. He was thrown into solitary confinement, where he remained in a six by nine foot cell for 29 years as one of the Angola 3. In 2001, the state grudgingly acknowledged his innocence and set him free. This is his story. It begins at the beginning; born black, born poor, born in Louisiana in1942, King journeyed to Chicago as a hobo at the age of 15. He married and had a child, and briefly pursued a semi-pro boxing career to help provide for his family. Just a teenager when he entered the Louisiana penal system for the first time, King tells of his attempts to break out of this system, and his persistent pursuit of justice where there is none. Yet this remains a story of inspiration and courage, and the triumph of the human spirit. The conditions in Angola almost defy description, yet King never gave up his humanity, or the work towards justice for all prisoners that he continues to do today. From the Bottom of the Heap, so simply and humbly told, strips bare the economic and social injustices inherent in our society, while continuing to be a powerful literary testimony to our own strength and capacity to overcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In essays written specifically for this volume, distinguished contributors assess highly charged and fundamental questions about the Holocaust: Is it unique? How can it be compared with other instances of genocide? What constitutes genocide, and how should the international community respond? On one side of the dispute are those who fear that if the Holocaust is seen as the worst case of genocide ever, its character will diminish the sufferings of other persecuted groups. On the other side are those who argue that unless the Holocaust's uniqueness is established, the inevitable tendency will be to diminish its abiding significance. The editor's introductions provide the contextual considerations for understanding this multidimensional dispute and suggest that there are universal lessons to be learned from studying the Holocaust. The third edition brings this volume up to date and includes new readings on the Cambodian and Rwandan genocides, common themes in genocide ideologies, and Iran's reaction to the Holocaust. In a world where genocide persists and the global community continues to struggle with the implications of international crime, prosecution, justice, atonement, reparation, and healing, the issues addressed in this book are as relevant as ever.

Book excerpt: Ever since this country came into being, women have waged battles for rights in the pages of their plays, and on the stages where those plays were performed. - FROM THE PREFACE BY SHIRLEY LAURO Front Lines is a pathbreaking collection of the most important, critically acclaimed plays written by the country's leading contemporary female playwrights. Including seven full scripts and accompanying materials, Front Lines provides both major examples of the playwright's craft and an essential introduction to the politically inspired work of female dramatists of the twenty-first century. Here is Jessica Blank's widely heralded The Exonerated (written with Erik Jensen), based on interviews with American prisoners incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. Also included is Nilaja Sun's outstanding No Child . . ., winner of the Outer Critics Circle's 2007 John Gassner Award for Best New Play - a funny, stirring one-woman show centering on an inner-city teacher's success at involving her rebellious students in their own education by putting on a play. Rounding out the collection are Emily Mann's Mrs. Packard, Paula Vogel's Hot 'n' Throbbing, Shirley Lauro's Clarence Darrow's Last Trial, Quiara Alegra Hudes's Eliot: A Soldier's Fugue, and Cindy Cooper's Words of Choice. With a preface by distinguished playwright Shirley Lauro and an introduction by theater critic Alexis Greene, Front Lines also includes short biographies of the playwrights and a production photo of each play.

Book excerpt: Theodore Kaczynski saw violent collapse as the only way to bring down the techno-industrial system, and in more than a decade of mail bomb terror he killed three people and injured 23 others. One does not need to support the actions that landed Kaczynski in supermax prison to see the value of his essays disabusing the notion of heroic technology while revealing the manner in which it is destroying the planet. For the first time, readers will have an uncensored personal account of his anti-technology philosophy, including a corrected version of the notorious ''Unabomber Manifesto,''Kaczynski, s critique of anarcho-primitivism, and essays regarding ''the Coming Revolution.''
